Formulation Stability "STABILITY" It means different things to different people. Basically, it can be defined as a "lack of change." To a consumer, it means that the cleaner works the same whether fresh out of the bottle or months old. To a formulator, it can mean having a successful product or an endless stream of headaches. It can mean having just one recipe that always produces the same product with the same performance. It means knowing that the product described on your batch sheets really is the same one that will end up in the customers hands. Nowhere has there been more of a challenge in this respect than with oxidizers in formulations and, in particular, hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide, because of its chemical nature, will break down in the presence of organic/metallic compounds and/or heat. Peroxide decomposes into oxygen and water. Conventional hydrogen peroxide tends to undergo this transformation almost immediately upon blending into a formulation. Metal Cleaning With The photo to the right shows the result of common copper wire exposed to a standard peroxide/sulfuric micro-etch for 30 seconds. The rapid oxidation of the newly exposed copper is to be expected. The Peroxy- Blend /sulfuric acid combination shows a protected surface free of oxidation.
