Grading System The grading policy is the following: Classification and numerical equivalent First Class 70+ Upper Second Class 60-69 Lower Second Class 50-59 Third Class 40-49 Admission Requirements Applicants should have a range of GCSEs (which must include a minimum of Grade C in GCSE Mathematics and English). Other qualifications accepted include, for example, Vocational Advanced Subsidiary and Vocational Advanced levels, Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates and the International Baccalaureate. Applications from non-standard applicants are welcomed and will be considered individually. Special entry requirements: Applicants that do not have English as their first language and/or have not received their education through the medium of English must achieve an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.5 and no element A good standard of spoken English and good inter personal skills are a pre-requisite for all candidates. Progression Routes Direct entry into specific levels of the Business Studies programmes is possible for those candidates who hold business related BTEC, HNC and HND qualifications and wish to top-up their certificates or diplomas to a bachelor degree, provided the learning outcomes of their BTEC award satisfy those of the equivalent levels of the BA (Hons) programme for which they seek admission. Direct Entry and other AP(E)L (approved prior and experiential learning) opportunities are considered on an individual basis. Application/Registration Students can complete the Application/Admission procedure online through: http://www.universitystmarkstjohn.co.uk After the submission of the application form and the payment of the application fee, the student s application form is processed and a decision is reached within two working days. Upon admission the student is requested to pay the initial deposit and is then given access to the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). 12 Certificate Level Modules BUSC01 - BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT This module will prepare students for an analytical and thorough understanding of the local, national and international environment in which businesses operate today. Students will gain an understanding of the organisational goals and responsibilities of different types of businesses operating in a range of sectors of the economy, while being able to critically analyse and assess the global factors that influence business activities and performance. In addition, students are taught how to apply this knowledge to make effective decisions in complex and unpredictable contexts in a way that enhances their employability. BUSC02 - PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT This module provides students with the knowledge, skills, business awareness and confidence that will enable them to succeed in the wider business world. Students will be exposed to current management theories and practices in the private, public, large to SME sectors and within voluntary and community organisations. They will also have the opportunity to improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For instance, they will be encouraged to critically evaluate management theories with respect to their real-life applications and relevance to their countries cultures. They will be required to engage in creative thinking and develop skills to plan, organise, control, lead, and adapt to and promote change. They will be able to understand the determinants of effective communication and be able to apply appropriate leadership styles to motivate others and increase organisational performance. They will also have the opportunity to improve their time management and decision making skills thus contributing to their employability and personal development. BUSC03 - ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR This module provides students with the knowledge, skills, business awareness and confidence that they will need for future use in professional environments. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop critical analytical knowledge and understanding of current organisational and management theories. Students will be encouraged to critically evaluate management theories with respect to their real-life applications and relevance to their countries cultures. They will also have the opportunity to improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For instance, they will learn how to identify and deal with sources of conflict. BUSC04 - MANAGING FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND DECISIONS The objective of this module is to give students the knowledge to conceptually understand the sources of finance available to a business, while providing them with a systematic understanding of the implications of finance as a resource within a business. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to demonstrate a confident usage of the basic terms related to finance as a resource and also to the ways in which financial information is presented. In addition, the module will cover the relevance of global economic, social, regulatory and political factors affecting the financial world, while raising awareness of ethical issues in modern Accounting and Finance. BUSC05 - MARKETING This module provides students with a detailed appreciation of the principles and importance of marketing. The course will include elements of planning, analysis, research, price, product, place and promotion. Students will be prepared to formulate reasoned arguments in the development of an appropriate and sustainable marketing mix. It will help students to critically assess the value of models used within marketing to examine customer behaviour, while also empowering them to comprehend and analyse the benefits of a marketing and customer oriented organisation. BUSC06 - ACADEMIC, PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT This module aims to help students become effective, confident and selfdirected so that they can confidently develop and manage their personal and professional skills to achieve their own academic, personal and career goals. The module aims to help students develop their ability to organise, manage and use a range of approaches to improve their performance during their academic studies as well as in preparing for employment and career development. Students will have the opportunity to improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For instance, they will have an opportunity to demonstrate an ability to analytically evaluate learning approaches and strategies, reflect on their learning and development plan, develop appropriate written and presentational communication skills, be creative, present structured and reasoned arguments, and improve their time management and decision making skills. This module is intended to support students in their continuing professional development and encourage their lifelong learning for employment and further study. 13

14 Diploma Level Modules BUSD01 - RESEARCH METHODS FOR BUSINESS This module provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the nature and importance of management research. Students will also have the opportunity to improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For instance, they will develop cognitive skills relevant to the study of business by demonstrating critical thinking, analysis and synthesis (identifying assumptions, using evidence to evaluate statements, detecting false logic, and defining terms adequately). Students will also engage in effective problem solving and decision making using appropriate quantitative and qualitative skills. In addition, students will conduct research into business and management issues, using a range of business data, sources of information and appropriate methodologies. Finally, students will develop appropriate written and presentational communication skills and the ability to present a structured and reasoned argument. These skills will facilitate their academic achievement, and enhance their personal and professional development. MGTD01 - LEADERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS This module provides students with in-depth analytical knowledge and critical understanding of the styles and impact of leadership (differentiating between, and integrating, leadership and management perspectives). IFTD02 - SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN The objective of this module to introduce students to the concepts of a system and what it means to develop and implement an information system in an organisation. Students will cultivate a clear understanding of the major phases of the system development life cycle, including the ability to identify the information and processing needs of the organisation. In addition, students will be given the knowledge necessary to elicit, identify, recognize and capture requirements for information systems. IFTD03 - DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS This module serves to introduce students to the critical role of databases and database management systems in managing organisational data and information.
