1 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a famous African-American leader. He was also known as MLK. MLK was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia.

2 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott In 1951, Dr. King graduated from college. He married his wife, Coretta Scott, in 1953.

3 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. giving a civil rights speech. Dr. King became a civil rights leader. He wanted African-Americans to be treated fairly.

4 Rosa Parks on a bus Rosa Parks and Dr. King In 1955, an African-American woman, named Rosa Parks, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. Dr. King wanted to show America that he disapproved of what happened to Rosa Parks. He decided to lead a boycott.

5 Gandhi Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1959, Dr. King visited India. He studied the work of Gandhi. MLK learned about non-violence.

6 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. People gathered in Washington, D.C. In 1963, Dr. King led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C.

7 Dr. King giving his I Have a Dream speech. People gathered in Washington, D.C. During the March on Washington, Dr. King gave a famous speech. The famous I Have a Dream speech was about stopping discrimination.

8 In 1964, Dr. King became the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

9 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. talking with President Lyndon Johnson. In 1966, Dr. King met with President Lyndon Johnson to talk about the Vietnam War. Dr. King did NOT agree with the war in Vietnam.

10 The motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot. Not all Americans agreed with Dr. King. In 1968, he was shot outside of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. died on April 4, 1968.

11 Statue of Dr. King in Washington, D.C. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan created a new holiday. It is called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Every year, it is the third Monday of January. It is a day to honor and remember Dr. Kings life.
