USEFUL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS Summer University 2014 Universidad CEU San Pablo Madrid Spain

WELCOME TO UNIVERSIDAD CEU SAN PABLO Summer University is an initiative of Universidad CEU San Pablo involving several fields of scientific, economic, cultural, social and legal knowledge. It is a representation of the international vocation of the CEU, mainly practice-focused. The Universidad CEU San Pablo will transfer the credits completed in each of the modules attended within each course. Such credits may be recognised by the students' own Universities according to the criteria these have established for this purpose. This initiative intends to promote the acquisition of capacities and the development of personal abilities among students. The syllabus of these programmes is addressed to those who wish to receive specific training in certain aspects of their education, in an academic and cosmopolitan environment. Many of these courses are also designed for those who are interested in the professional, academic or business field. These Courses are conceived and imparted by professors and academics of the Universidad CEU San Pablo and other foreign Higher Education Centre, institutions and companies. Those students who complete all the contents included in a Course will receive a Diploma by the Universidad CEU San Pablo certifying the completion thereof.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION SPANISH TIMINGS: In Spain people generally eat later than in other European countries: breakfast is usually 7:30 10:30, lunch 13:00 15:00 and dinner 20:30 22:30. These later timings also affect the nightlife meaning music bars are open until 3:30 and some clubs at the weekend don t close until 7am! SHOPS: The general opening hours for shops in 10:30 13:30 and then 16:30 20:00. Big stores however are open all day from 10:00 21:00 and big malls such as El Corte Ingles don t close until 22:00. Also, remember that most shops are closed on Sundays. WORKING HOURS: A basic working day usually starts between 8:00 and 9:00 and ends between 17:00 and 18:00. Many businesses (see above) will close during the afternoon and government offices generally close at 15:00. POSTAL SERVICES: The Central Post and Telegraph Office is located in Paseo del Prado 1 in Madrid and is opened on weekdays from 8:30 to 21:30 and between 8:30 and 14:00 on Saturdays. Telephone: +34 915 230 694 / 902 197 197 ELECTRICITY: Standard electrical voltage in Madrid is 220-240 V AC, 50 Hz. Spain uses the 2 pin standard European plug so if you are coming from the United States or the United Kingdom, you will need to bring an adapter with you. Adapters are available in most hardware stores. CREDIT CARDS: Most hotels, restaurants and shops in Madrid accept the main credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, 4B, American Express and Diners Club. BANKS: Most banks are open from Monday to Friday between 8:30 and 14:30 and only a few banks open on Saturday mornings. However, ATMs are located around the city and the majority offer international services. LUNCH & DINNER. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Residence Hall, but the University has cafeterias and offers cheap menus with main dish, second dish, dessert and coffee. Price is around 6.

VISA PASSPORT & MEDICAL INSURANCE In the event that the stay in Spain of a citizen from a EU Member State or from any other State pursuant to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, regardless of the purpose of the visit, does not last for over three months, it is sufficient to have an updated Passport or ID document, which may be used to enter the country. Such stay will not be taken into account for residency purposes. The foregoing will be applicable to those relatives of the citizens from a EU Member State or any other state included in the Agreement on the European Economic Area who are not citizens of any of these countries but accompany or meet a citizen of one of such countries and who have a current and valid Passport and have met all entrance requirements. A stay will be considered a period of time in Spanish territory of no more than 90 days, without prejudice to the provisions applicable to students. Upon completion of such period, if the applicant wishes to stay in Spain, he/she must obtain a extension or an authorisation of residence. In the event of a student entering the country with a visa, should such cover a period under three months, the period covered by the visa may be extended but it cannot exceed the maximum period established in the previous section under any circumstance. Health and medical requirements Students from the European Union will be required to present their European Health Insurance Card to be admitted. Those students coming from outside the EU countries must prove that they have health insurance to cover their stay in Spain.

SUMMER TIME IN MADRID Madrid is a large ever-growing city with approximately five million inhabitants. It is located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, on a plateau of 650 metres of height. The climate is continental, which means that it gets quite cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. Madrid is a very lively city. There are plenty of traditional cafés, chocolate shop cafés, summer terraces and tapas bars. Mingling with locals is quite easy, they are very welcoming and are used to hosting people coming from other parts of the country or the word. There are facilities available to practice any kind of sport. The city offers many other leisure opportunities. There is a wide range of opportunities related to art, particularly when it comes to painting. Madrid has three fabulous art galleries: the Museo del Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Modern Art Centre Reina Sofía, which are located in the same area and are referred to as "The Art Triangle". Along with museums and other traditional places of tourist interest, such as the Retiro Park or the Rastro (street market of traditional and second-hand objects) are worth a visit, as well as the Madrid de los Austrias (The Madrid of the Habsburgs) or the Plaza Mayor (Main Square). There also are many interesting short trips outside the city at quite a short distance. An hour away, or even less, you can find El Escorial, El Pardo, Toledo, Segovia, Aranuez, Chinchón, La Granja or Ávila. You may find any information about Madrid and the activities of your interest in http://www.esmadrid.com/en/portal.do
