PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER LEARN HOW TO EMBROIDER ON PRINTED FABRIC PAPER IN A FEW EASY STEPS! Here at Anita Goodesign, we like to think outside of the traditional quilt block! That is why we have created beautiful printable fabrics to go along with some of our collections. These printable fabrics are additional files we provide on certain collection CD-ROMs for you to be able to print off of your home printer onto fabric paper! Printing your fabric is easy to do from your home and we show you everything you will need! You already know we like making quilts and embroidery projects easy so this is another technique you can do to enhance creativity! Steve Wilson Anita Goodesign, Inc. EXAMPLE Animal Portraits These stitches sit perfectly on top of the watercolor artwork bringing these animals to life! ANIMAL PORTRAITS Mix & Match Quilting Collection Printed Fabric: Before Some collections may include printed fabrics for you to utilize with the rest of your designs. You can easily print these yourself using your home printer. It is extremely easy to do and we will show you how! The printed fabric can be purchased at your local craft store or sewing shop. You ll love creating your own fabrics and this new style of embroidery! Printed Fabric: After PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER 2

HOW TO: PRINT YOUR FABRIC When using printed fabric, it is important to remember that every printer and computer is slightly different, so these are general instructions to give you an idea of how easy it is to use this technique! First, open the file from your CD-ROM. All of our printable files are in PDF format, which can be opened and printed using Adobe Reader. This is a free program you can download at www.get. adobe.com/reader if you do not have it. Note: The printed fabric used in the instructions is from a previous collection. A When you go to print the file for an A-sized block, it is very important to make sure you have Actual Size clicked in order to maintain the intended ratio. Otherwise, if you are using a block that is meant to fit exactly on a quilt block it can throw off the design. Select Actual Size for the A-sized blocks only. See the following pages for information on sizing the backgrounds for other quilt block sizes.) The printer should also be set to a normal quality, plain paper setting unless specified otherwise by the manufacturer of the printable fabric you are using. B Before you start printing on your fabric, it is always good to do a test print on a plain sheet of paper to make sure there are no issues and you are happy with the quality. It is very important to know which way to lay your printable fabric so that you don t accidentally print on the wrong side. If your printer doesn t have clear instructions, then just mark the piece of paper you are using for the test on one side so you know which way to feed it in. The last thing you want to do is waste ink and a fabric sheet trying to figure this out! C PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER 3

HOW TO: PRINT YOUR FABRIC Once you are happy with your test print, remove all paper from your printer and load only one sheet of printable fabric at a time. Again, make sure you load the paper so that it will print on the fabric side. D When we tested this out to make sure it would work well for anyone using a home ink-jet printer, we went out and bought a vary basic one for only $99 and have used it for every single block we have printed. So, if you are worried that your printer might not be high quality enough, just keep in mind that we created these collections using a relatively inexpensive printer. E Once it has finished printing, follow the instructions from the printable fabric manufacturer to figure out how long it should sit before you are able to peel it from its paper backing. Also, since there are different types of fabrics and different manufacturers, we always recommend reading the instructions on or in the packaging before using their product. Once you have followed the instructions on how to finish your printed fabric once it prints, you are ready to use it with our designs! F PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER 4

PRINTED BLOCK BACKGROUNDS FOR DIFFERENT SIZE QUILT BLOCKS A The printed block backgrounds are PDF files and will open in Adobe. Each of the PDF files included is for the A size quilt block. If you are making another size, you will need to change the scale of the design before printing. Note: If you are printing the size AA rectangular blocks, you MUST use 11 x 17 printable fabric for the background to fit. B C Once you click print, a box will open with different options. Depending on your computer, this box may look different. The section that we are going to change has to do with the scale or proportion of the picture printed. If you are printing the picture for the Size A block, make sure this says 100% since we are printing actual size. If you are printing this block for any other size, you will need to change that 100 to another number. This will change the scale of the picture to match the design size on your machine. The numbers are listed below. Size AA: 117 % Size A: 100 % Size B: 87 % Size C: 75 % Size D: 61% PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER 5 Notice the preview on the side also changes sizes to reflect the scale change.

EXAMPLE Birds of a Feather This is the example we used in our step-by-step instructions on how to print your printable fabric. Before Notice the addition and placement of the embroidery details. We have strategically placed the embroidery stitches so your finished block will look clean and not busy. With traditional embroidered quilt blocks, some of the design features of your fabric may be covered by the embroidery. With our printable fabric designs, you ll never have to worry about losing details! After PRINTABLE FABRIC PAPER 6
