MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY SCAVENGER HUNT Hello and welcome to the American Museum of Natural History Scavenger Hunt! You and your team will have a lot of fun exploring this wonderful museum and trying to find out the answers to these questions. At the end of the day your Team Leader will go over the answers to the questions so you can mark your sheet and total up how many you got correct. G Go oo od d llu uc ck k!! PLEASE NOTE! M USEUM RULES Look with your eyes; don t touch with your hands, unless the signs say you can No running in the museum Discussion is great, but keep the noise level low GATHER TOGETHER WITH THE GROUP AND HEAD UP TO THE FOURTH FLOOR. (USE THE STAIRS IF YOU CAN; THE ELEVATORS CAN TAKE A LONG TIME!) 4TH FLOOR ON THE FOURTH FLOOR, SET A MEETING POINT BEFORE HEADING OFF IN YOUR GROUPS. Which animal had the enormous canine teeth of the sabre-toothed cat? 10. Did this animal eat meat? CAN YOU FIND: A Megaloceros? HALL OF ORNITHISCHIAN DINOSAURS Try to find these dinosaurs and note what they are called: 11. A dinosaur with a row of plates on its back and spikes on its tail? 12. A dinosaur that looks like a tank? 13. A dinosaur that has a skull like a crash helmet? horns and a frill on its head? 14. A dinosaur with three FUN FACT: Most dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago. What does extinct mean? HALL OF SAURISCHIAN DINOSAURS 15. How many seagulls are flying above the entrance? DID YOU KNOW? That many dinosaurs were vegetarians? That s right! They only ate plants, no meat! You can identify these dinosaurs by looking at their teeth, which are long with round ends, not sharp like those of the meat-eating dinosaurs. 16. Can you find two vegetarian dinosaurs? What is another word for an animal that doesn t eat meat?

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS HALL 17. How long does an incubating python wrap herself around her eggs? Some facts about REPTILES and AMPHIBIANS 18. The world s longest snake is looking for dinner. What is it going to eat? FACT: Reptiles lay their eggs on land. Their eggs have hard shells that provide the babies with a wet and safe environment. FACT: Amphibians lay their eggs in water or damp places on land. The eggs are naked they don t have hard shells and need to be kept moist. When the babies hatch they often live in water for the first part of their lives. 19. The world s smallest frog is only half an inch long, but what is it called? 20. What is the difference between an alligator and a crocodile? PRIMATES AND NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS 21. Find the mandrill. What color is its nose? 22. Where does it live? THE HALL OF AFRICAN MAMMALS 23. DETECTIVE DISCUSSION: If you were an African mammal, what would you be and why?

What four main habitats of African peoples does this exhibition focus on? 29. How big are Mbuti Pygmies? 30. What do they eat as the bulk of their diet? CAN YOU FIND: An African drum? HALL OF ASIAN PEOPLES 31. When did Gautama Buddha found the Buddhist faith? CAN YOU FIND: A Chuckchee person? A Chinese bridal chair? BIRDS OF THE WORLD 32. What birds are shown to be resident in South Georgia, an island in the South Atlantic near Antarctica? CAN YOU FIND: An Andean condor? ASIAN MAMMALS 33. How many Asian elephants and Indian rhinos are there on display? CAN YOU FIND: A leopard?

YOU WILL HAVE 20 MINUTES TO EXPLORE THIS FLOOR BEFORE MEETING BACK WITH EVERYONE ELSE TO GO INTO THE HALL OF PLANET EARTH. HALL OF BIODIVERSITY AND FORESTS CAN YOU FIND: A carpenter ant? An earthworm? Slime fungus? A daddy longlegs? An acorn? 34. What is each of these: a plant, an insect, or a reptile? Spend some time to draw a picture of some animals and insects that you can find in the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. NORTH AMERICAN MAMMALS Find your favorite animal in this room and complete as much information on this fact card about the animal as you can: ANIMAL IDENTITY CARD Type of animal: I think this animal could be called: How big is this animal? BLUE WHALES are the largest animals that have ever lived. An elephant weighs the same amount as the tongue of a blue whale! (It s the same as three school buses!) 40. What does a blue whale eat? 41. Each animal has its own unique way of communicating. Humans talk to one another by words and body motions. How do dolphins talk to each other?

PLANET EARTH and UNIVERSE GO INTO THE HALL OF PLANET EARTH TOGETHER. SET A MEETING POINT, THEN GROUPS CAN EXPLORE THE HALL OF PLANET EARTH AND THE HALL OF THE UNIVERSE FOR 30 MINUTES. HALL OF PLANET EARTH and HALL OF THE UNIVERSE Under all that water, the ocean floors are covered with volcanoes, mountains, and canyons. These sit on top of about 10 giant pieces of rock called plates. These plates move apart all the time, sometimes bumping into each other or splitting apart, breaking along cracks called faults. 42.
