Service Information Letter 2900 Selma Highway Montgomery, AL 36108 USA Tel: 334-386-5400 Fax: 334-386-5450 Letter No. A-138 Issue Date: Nov. 17, 2010 ES-7024-14 ALTERNATOR INSPECTION & DIODE COVER REPLACEMENT INTRODUCTION: It has come to the attention of Hartzell Engine Technologies, LLC (HET), formerly Kelly Aerospace Energy Systems, LLC (KAES), that all ES-7024-14 alternators may experience cracks in the original diode cover (P/N 40538). These cracks are related to vibration experienced in service use over time. The vibration causes the cover to crack and in extreme cases will allow the cover to come in contact with the Aux terminal shorting it to ground and damaging the terminal and diodes. This condition, left uncorrected, may eventually lead to the degradation or loss of alternator function. This Service Information Letter is being issued to recommend inspection of ES-7024-14 alternator and replacment of the existing P/N 40538 diode cover with a new HET P/N 40857 diode cover. (All serial numbers, see effectivity below.) COMPLIANCE: At the next regularly scheduled inspection event or annual inspection, which ever comes first. EFFECTIVITY: All Aircraft* utilizing a HET or KAES ES-7024-14 alternator installed with a P/N 40538 diode cover. (See method of identification Figure 3.) * Includes but not limited to: Cirrus model aircraft and Teledyne Continental Motors engines. For questions concerning this instruction please contact HET, Service Dept. at (888) 461-6077. Contact your local HET distributor to purchase available service parts. PROCEDURE: CAUTION: THIS PROCEDURE MUST BE PERFORMED BY COMPETENT AND QUALIFIED PERSONNEL FAMILIAR WITH ENGINE AND AIRFRAME MAINTENANCE THAT IS SPECIFIC TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN ECONOMIC LOSS, EQUIPMENT DAMAGE, AND/OR PHYSICAL INJURY. CAUTION: DO NOT DEPEND ON THIS SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER FOR GAINING ACCESS TO THE AIRCRAFT OR ENGINE. THIS INSTRUCTION REQUIRES THAT YOU USE THE APPLICABLE MANUFACTURER S MAINTENANCE MANUALS. IN ADDITION, ANY PREFLIGHT OR IN FLIGHT OPERATIONAL CHECKS REQUIRE USE OF THE APPROPRIATE AFM OR POH. 1. Access the aircraft alternator by removing the engine cowling and panels as required in accordance with instructions contained in the applicable aircraft maintenance manual. 2. Identify whether the alternator has a old or new style cover by observing Figure 3. If new style (with no cracks), proceed to Return to Service section. If old style, continue with this instruction. 3. Remove all electrical power from the aircraft before beginning work. Assure that the aircraft battery has been disconnected and that no external power is connected. 4. It may be necessary to remove the alternator from the engine to accomplish the cover replacement. If so or if the alternator needs to be replaced, remove the alternator in accordance with instructions contained in the applicable engine service instructions and/or the aircraft maintenance manual. 5. Before replacing the cover, examine the Aux terminal for damage. If there is evidence of arcing or in extreme cases, chafing of the terminal as shown below in Figure 1, replace with a new or rebuilt alternator then proceed to Return to Service section. (Any arcing or contact of the cover to the Aux terminal can damage the diodes.) CAUTION: SPECIAL PROCEDURES ARE REQUIRED WHEN REMOVING OR REPLACING ALTERNATOR TERMINAL HARDWARE. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT KAES SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER A-125 REV. A OR LATER BE OBSERVED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY. PUBLICATIONS MAY BE DOWNLOADED OR PRINTED FROM THE HET WEBSITE. SEE TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION. Inspect Aux Terminal for Chafing & Arcing Damage Figure 1 6. If no action was required per step 5 and P/N 40538 old style cover was identified per step 2, the cover must be replaced. Remove (B) terminal top cupped nut, washer, and aircraft power wire, then loosen the bottom cupped nut. Remove the three retaining screws P/N 4339-1 and lock washers P/N 12X-0195 and discard hardware and old style cover. (See Fig. 2) Obtain HET Cover Kit P/N 40879 containing the cover, screws, and washers, necessary to comply with this SB. Page 2 of 4 Hartzell Engine Technologies SIL A-138 New
PROCEDURE: (Cont d) 7. After removing old cover but prior to installing the new, remove both cupped nuts and metal washer from the Aux terminal. Install one P/N ALE-0050* fiber washer on top of the existing fiber washer. Re-install metal washer and bottom nut, torque to 14-16 in-lbs. (see Figure 2) Figure 2 New Cover Installation NOTE: The new style cover (HET P/N 40857*) may be identified by a lip area around the base of the cover and by the thicker cover material. See Figure 3. 8. Install the new style cover P/N 40857*. Be sure that the cover does not chafe or contact any of the terminals or wiring. Install the three new retaining screws HET P/N 4339-1* and lock washers HET P/N 12X-0195* and torque each to 20-25 in-lbs. Tighten the battery (B) terminal bottom cupped nut and torque to 15-20 in-lbs. New Cover P/N 40857 Identification of New Style Cover Lip at Base & Thicker Material Figure 3 9. If the alternator was removed from the engine to accomplish the cover replacement, re-install in accordance with instructions contained in the applicable engine service instructions and/or the aircraft maintenance manual. 10. Reconnect power wire to B terminal, install washer, and tighten top cupped nut 50-60 in-lbs, while holding the bottom cupped nut with a thin wrench to avoid turning the bottom nut. Re-install Aux wire (if applicable) and top cupped nut. Torque top nut to 15-20 in-lbs. Hold the bottom cupped nut with a thin wrench to avoid turning the bottom nut. See Figure 2. 11. Check all mechanical connections per the engine or aircraft manufacturer s torque specification. 12. Reconnect electrical power and perform an engine run to check the security of installation and to check performance of the alternator. If good, proceed to the Return to Service. * Part of HET Cover Kit P/N 40879. New Hartzell Engine Technologies SIL A-138 Page 3 of 4
