Pacific New Media offers over 200 workshops each year encompassing the latest developments in commercial software programs, programming skills, visual design and theory, and the production process. Teaching strategies combine theory, demonstration, and hands-on learning in a Mac computer lab to provide an effective foundation of skills necessary for Web design & production. CERTIFICATE IN WEB DESIGN Successful completion of the Pacific New Media Certificate in Web Design requires students to work independently taking what they have learned in workshops and further developing their expertise through sustained practice. The scope of PNM s Web Design Certificate Program addresses the entire production process from planning and idea generation to an examination of existing products and sites. The program integrates three components essential to building a professional career: content, technology, and business. Students in the certificate program independently plan their workshop enrollments to satisfy the following requirements:

Creative Project: Upon completion of the required workshops, students produce a creative project in Web design. Each student, in consultation with their assigned faculty advisor, plans and implements the approved project. Students may work on a project of their own or may design a site for a local non-profit organization. Certificate Completion: The certificate program is designed to be completed in one to three years although completion in one year is recommended. Students who successfully complete the certificate program will receive a special icon they can display on their Web site showing that they have graduated from the Pacific New Media Web Design Certificate Program and their names and email addresses will be listed on the PNM certificate Web page unless they request otherwise. Registration Requirements: - Prior to registering, students must be computer literate and comfortable working in a Macintosh environment. PNM regularly offers a workshop in Mac fundamentals to assist those unfamiliar with working in a Mac environment. - Each student remits a $100 fee upon entering the certificate program. In addition to this fee, students register and pay the required registration fee for each workshop the student attends to fulfill certificate requirements. Pacific New Media offers workshops on weekdays, nights and weekends to accommodate a variety of schedules. - The ability to work independently is essential to successfully completing this certificate program. Location: Hands-on computer workshops take place in the Manoa Multimedia Lab in the Student Services Center at the University of Hawai i at Manoa and at our state-of-the-art lab at UH Downtown, Pioneer Plaza, 900 Fort Street, Suite 10 (lower level). More Details of Requirements PACIFIC NEW MEDIA CERTIFICATE IN WEB DESIGN University of Hawai i at Manoa DESIGN/CONTENT: 20 hours Design Fundamentals (4 hours): Review basic compositional principles in page layout and visual organization. Examine basic design principles and explore use of visual language; designed for those with little experience in the field of visual communication; taught both on and off the computer. User Interface/Information Design (12 hours): investigate unique features of Web sites and multimedia including interactivity and effective usability while meeting client needs; examine navigation and organization through complex elements. Writing for the Web (4 hours): develop an entirely new approach to language and Web site writing to convey information with maximum efficiency and a minimum of words; explore different styles of writing for monitor display and multimedia; requires college-level understanding of the English language. TECHNICAL: 66 hours Basic HTML (6 hours): an overview of HTML, the language of the Web; covers basic text, image and hyperlink use plus tables, forms, and frame development. Production Tools (18 hours): choose from robust programs used in multimedia production; hands-on projects provide real-world experience with key software tools that enable the integration of images, text, animation, sound and video including: Acrobat, Freehand, Illustrator and Flash.
Photoshop and/or Fireworks (12 hours): explore Adobe Photoshop, a key software program for preparing visual images for multimedia and the Web and Fireworks, which streamlines the process of creating and optimizing graphics and interactive images for the Web. Dreamweaver or Golive (12 hours): choose from two powerful software programs designed for multimedia authoring and the implementation of various Web design features. Databases/E-Commerce (6 hours): explore how to build and maintain client databases for Web delivery including database types, methods of integrating existing databases with the Web, and organizing large volumes of both visual and/or textual information; learn methods of compressing images and maximizing user ease and efficiency. Javascript (12 hours): JavaScript is one of the most widely used scripting languages used on the Web today. Adding interactivity and great control over the user experience, JavaScript adds a much needed second dimension to static HTML pages. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: 15 hours Project Management (6 hours): investigate how to administer and manage Web sites; examine how to determine clients needs, implement projects, and maintain sites. Strategic Marketing (6 hours): the Web has become a means of reaching thousands of individuals worldwide for purposes of sales, research, marketing and visibility; explore effective marketing/advertising principles related to conventional marketing as well as those unique to Web-based promotion. Legal Issues (3 hours): overview copyright law and intellectual property, especially as they relate to digital media and Web publishing; examine legal ramifications of the Web including fair use, permissions, fees, and many of the ethical concerns implicit in new media.
ELECTIVES: 12 hours Video: select from Final Cut Pro or Premiere, After Effects and Cleaner Sound CREATIVE PROJECT: 12+ hours All participants in the Web Design Certificate Program are required to produce a creative project in Web design and development which is planned and implemented in consultation with a faculty advisor. The creative project addresses all phases of Web design and development and finishes with mock client presentation. Completed projects are evaluated by the team.
