Scale Your Application Performance with Web-Scale IT @dchou1107 +DavidChoucio
Traditional IT AKA Break Fix Team Traditionally had a limited number of vendors from which to source their hardware, whether the need was for servers, storage devices or network equipment. Cannot scale environments fast enough to accommodate the business
"New IT" In A Digital World Four Pillars Of New IT Mobility - Mobility is a requirement for every organization. We have evolved to an era where we can start a task on one device (laptop, desktop) and finish the same task on a different device (smartphone, tablets, etc). Mobile First vs Mobile Only Cloud - It is time to embrace the cloud technology. IT has to move away from managing infrastructure and applications Big Data - The collection of data from various sources including structured and un-structured data What problem are we trying to solve? Social - Use social collaboration-based tools and solutions to transform the way IT and business leaders enhance communication, productivity, knowledge-sharing, and decision-making
What is Web-Scale IT Web-scale IT is a pattern of global class computing that delivers the capabilities of large cloud services providers to the enterprise. Gartner Pioneered by Google, Amazon and Facebook, Web-Scale IT technologies are making their way into healthcare data centers and changing the status quo. Scale-up, hardware specific, functionally intended solutions will give way to commodity based, software defined and scale-out methodologies.
Web-scale Applications Are Mostly in the Cloud Today Scale: Microsoft 1,000,000 Servers Source: https://infogr.am
Can You Run With the Cloud Big Players? 1.09.001 1:24K Power Usage Effectiveness at Google Percentage of Software Deployment Failures at Amazon Ratio of Technicians to Servers at Facebook

When Is A Good Time To Start? ASAP Start thinking about providing business value and STOP managing commodities CIOs and Technology leaders need to provide business value. Focus on being the business leaders providing technology to drive the organization strategy.
Opportunities (Challenges) In Healthcare Healthcare is a risk-averse industry. We deal with people s lives Tons of applications that are supported ONLY on hardware specific platform Legacy applications in the industry CULTURE CHANGE - Must create a culture that focuses on embracing risk and realizing that this is an evolution
Set Expectations: Web-scale Won't Happen Overnight 1 2 Huge barriers to switching vendor lock-in, culture, people, risk of data loss/application downtime Lack of deep engineering talent design, validation, testing, certification, support, innovation 3 Enterprise IT lacks the scale for Web-scale IT 4 Initial transformation costs are high 5 Viability of suppliers and supply chain risks (Hint: Think Thailand HDD crisis)
My Current Plan Now: Develop plans for your Web-scale IT future: Start with assessing where you are with respect to the six dimensions. Next 90 Days: Meet with the executive leadership and business leadership to gain support for your Web-scale IT initiative. Begin implementing processes for applications fitting within the new architecture and Next 12 Months: Work with enterprise, application and infrastructure architects to develop blueprints to re-factor applications and infrastructure along Web-scale IT concepts.
