The Role of Nutanix in the Public /Private / Hybrid Cloud Spectrum Chris Howard Vice President, Nutanix Federal Phil Ditzel Senior SE
Public Cloud Let s start with the definition NIST s Defini-on: A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on- demand access to a shared pool of configurable compu;ng resources (networks, servers, storage, applica;ons, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interac;on.
Public Cloud Key attributes NIST s Defini-on: A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on- demand access to a shared pool of configurable compu;ng resources (networks, servers, storage, applica;ons, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interac;on.
Public Cloud Not a Point a Spectrum On- demand Self- service NIST s Five Essen-al Characteris-cs of the Cloud Broad Resource Rapid Scalability Network Access Pooling & ElasAcity Measured Service NIST s Defini-on: A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on- demand access to a shared pool of configurable compu;ng resources (networks, servers, storage, applica;ons, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interac;on.
Public Cloud Not a Point a Spectrum So the Public Cloud offers us these features: Self- service and Public Cloud eliminates these datacenter challenges: Access from a broader geography Floor & Rack Space U;lity Compu;ng Power for IT infrastructure Scale or Reduce on demand ( Elas;city ) Cooling for IT infrastructure Consump;on- based billing Costs of IT infrastructure Share/bill IT costs based on u;liza;on Performance Concerns Complexity of IT infrastructure Resource Pooling DR/COOP no longer ;ed to a primary datacenter Poli;cs Convenience Minimal management Cost savings in some cases? Many IT rice bowls go away Specula;on and Overprovisioning Guessing at where your requirement will be in 18 months Rounding up to be on the safe side
Public Cloud Not a Point a Spectrum but in most cases today, par@cularly within the federal government, the following concerns trump all offered features or eliminated challenges: Informa@on Assurance Informa@on Assurance Informa@on Assurance
Public Cloud Not a Point a Spectrum Enter the Private Cloud If the public cloud leaves you with concern about data security or availability, it is simply not an op@on, no mader its benefits.
Enter The Private Cloud PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM The Private Cloud is merely an adempt at Public Cloud in a more comfortable IA spot Just as with the Public Cloud, there is a Private Cloud Spectrum But where Public Cloud adds features and eliminates datacenter challenges, Private Cloud adds features but without focus - - retains (or adds) datacenter challenges.
Moving right on the Private Cloud Spectrum PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM So how does one move their Private Cloud along the Spectrum? First: Enable Cloud Features Self- Service based billing Broad network access Resource Pooling Dynamic Convenience Minimal Management VIRTUALIZE! Second: Eliminate Datacenter Challenges Minimize Rackspace requirements Minimize Power requirements Minimize Cooling requirements Minimize Infrastructure Spend Pay as you go, not in advance! Maximize performance per Rack- U Minimize poli@cs and complexity By elimina@ng layers
Moving right on the Private Cloud Spectrum PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM Wait! This makes no sense. Enterprise requires 3- Tier Architectures Second: Eliminate Datacenter Challenges Minimize Rackspace requirements and Rackspace Minimize Power requirements Power draw Minimize Cooling requirements Server Cooling draw + Storage Fabric Minimize Infrastructure Spend = Big CAPEX & OPEX Pay as you go, not in advance! + SAN Big Complexity Maximize performance per Rack- U Lots of Rice Bowls Minimize poli@cs and complexity By elimina@ng layers VIRTUALIZE!
Moving right on the Private Cloud Spectrum PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM Not so not anymore. Enterprise no longer requires SANs, Servers, and Storage Switch Fabric Web- scale IT is changing datacenters Gartner introduced the term in May 2013: What is web- scale IT? It s our effort to describe all of the things happening at large cloud services firms such as Google, Amazon, Rackspace, NeWlix, Facebook, etc., that enables them to achieve extreme levels of service delivery as compared to many of their enterprise counterparts.
Moving right on the Private Cloud Spectrum PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM Gartner s Cameron Haight, August 2013: I ve seen the impact of conven-onal wisdom on IT (and especially on IT opera-ons which is my direct area of coverage) and frankly it isn t delivering. Maturity levels are stuck and costs, even with the advent of cloud, remain too high. So what s the model to follow? Look to the large cloud services providers such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. In other words, it s not the cloud per se that will save enterprise IT, but thinking and ac@ng like the major cloud providers across all the key dimensions of IT that will. More from Gartner on Web- scale IT: hjp://blogs.gartner.com/cameron_haight/2013/08/21/all- in- with- web- scale- it/
Observations on the Private Cloud Spectrum: Conclusion PUBLIC CLOUD SPECTRUM YOUR FIREWALL (OR IA COMFORT) PRIVATE CLOUD SPECTRUM Not everyone can move 100% of their IT to the Public Cloud. Those who can t, seek Public Cloud adributes and benefits. They build Private Clouds. Private Clouds are not a point, they are a spectrum. Those who seek to have Private Clouds that are most like Public Clouds need to know that datacenter challenges can be eliminated as part of the move to Private Cloud. architectures (SANs, Servers, and Storage Fabric) are obsolete, complex, and expensive. Web- scale products eliminate their challenges. More from Gartner on Web- scale IT: hjp://blogs.gartner.com/cameron_haight/2013/08/21/all- in- with- web- scale- it/
Hybrid Cloud Ability to move between Public and Private as Needed Enter the Private Cloud What if you had the flexibility to move between between Public and Private Clouds based on your workload requirements?
Hybrid Cloud Ability to move between Public and Private as Needed What if you had the flexibility to move between between Public and Private Clouds based on your workload requirements? Nutanix platform has the ability to leverage the following Public cloud providers for backup targets:! Amazon AWS (Public)! Amazon AWS (Gov Cloud)! Microsoft Azure!! Coming soon! Convert your backed up VM images to running instances on the Public Cloud, all via Prism!
