Co- reference, strings, and meaning The more similar two strings are, the more likely to be a co- reference but string similarity cannot be used as evidence Co- reference (as reference) must be idenffied by the meaning (extension) of an expression Thus, based on meaning, interpretafon, context SemioFcs Co- reference works across all sign types (symbolic, iconic, indexical) Can be intenfonal or not. This has no pracfcal consequences, but may be used in detecfon

Co- reference statements Implicit co- references exist in the world and can be detected This is not enough, we need explicit co- reference statements.
