1 Introduction The HP Inventory Tool feature is designed to help you collect HP ProLiant hardware and software information in an environment managed by Microsoft System Center. With this information, you can create enhanced collections and reports. This guide assumes you have already installed and configured the Inventory Tool feature (included with the HP ProLiant System Center Configuration Manager Integration Kit) in your environment, and you are ready to use the Inventory Tool. Not covered Covered This guide does not contain standard Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) instructions. This guide contains HP-specific information related to the general steps for collecting server information in your environment. Before you start You must be familiar with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager features. 4 Introduction

2 Inventory, collections, and reports The HP ProLiant Inventory Tool collects extended ProLiant hardware and software information that can be used to create enhanced collections and reports. Before you get started Make sure the following requirements are met: The Inventory Client Agent is scheduled and configured to collect IDMIF and NOIDMIF files. The managed servers have the HP Insight Management Agents installed and configured. Advertise the package to a collection 1. Open the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manger Console. 2. Open Computer Management Software Distribution. 3. Right-click Advertisements, and then click New Advertisement. 4. In the New Advertisement Wizard, on the General step, type a new name for the advertisement, and set the Package box to HP ProLiant Inventory Tool and respective Inventory Program gets selected by default. Select the appropriate individual Collection or HP Server Collection or its sub collection. 5. On the Schedule step, add a mandatory assignment of a recurring schedule. 6. On the Distribution Points wizard, select both the Download content from distribution point and run locally options. 7. Complete the wizard. NOTE: HP recommends using a recurring schedule so that future hardware and software changes are collected. NOTE: If Windows Server 2008 is deployed using the HP ProLiant Server OS Deployment feature, since it installs SNMP features and agents, the HP ProLiant Inventory Tool runs as part of the HP ProLiant Server OS Deployment feature task sequence. The HP ProLiant Inventory Tool data is updated and can be viewed in the Resource Explorer for the nodes in SCCM. When Windows Server 2003 is deployed using HP ProLiant Server OS Deployment feature, it will not install any agents and features. The HP ProLiant Inventory Tool on the managed nodes must be manually advertised. View inventory data for a managed server 1. Open the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager Console. 2. Right-click a node, and then select Start Resource Explorer. 3. Click Resource Explorer Hardware, and then click any feature starting with HP. 4. View the feature details on the right. Before you get started 5

3 Reference Inventory tool data The inventory tool is a command-line utility. When executed with the /m option, it generates a series of MIF files such as HP0.mif to HP 8.mif files in the NOIDMIF directory. The information in these files is collected by the Inventory Client Agent and populated into the Resource Explorer, as well as the SCCM data base. 4 Troubleshooting The inventory tool is installed but does not run Resolution: Copy the package to a distribution point and advertise it on a schedule to a collection. The inventory tool reports a failure Resolution: Ensure that the target server is a supported model and that the HP Insight Management agents are installed and configured. The inventory tool runs but the inventory data is not collected Resolution: Ensure that the Inventory Client Agent is scheduled to run and configured to collect IDMIF and NOIDMIF files. After performing a Windows deployment, the HP inventory data does not include the WBEM Provider version information Resolution: Schedule the inventory tool to be executed again on that target and the version information will be gathered. The inventory tool is installed but does not run 11
