Traineeship Quick Start Guide A guide to inform Individuals and Employer s on work-based training available throughout Australia. Covers: What is a traineeship? How to become a Trainee? What are the responsibilities of parties involved? And much more Traineeship Terminology Traineeship is simply the name the government has given to this particular funding pool. We often reference the word Traineeship to the younger generation, however this is not the case. It is not to be confused with Apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship is for workers who are beginning a trade. Eg: Carpenter, Boiler Maker, Electrcian etc This funding is for employed individuals ages 16-65 years of age who are wanting to upskill, gain a qualification, and/or have their skills recognized into a qualification. What is a Traineeship? A Traineeship is full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement. During the course of a traineeship, a trainee gains paid work and has the opportunity to learn new skills in a hands on environment. On successful completion, the trainee earns a nationally recognised qualification. A traineeship is a valuable first step to a rewarding career or a change in career direction. You can be aged 16-65 to become a trainee. Traineeships are one of the best ways to get hired within an industry you would like to start your career within or simply want up-skill your knowledge in a field you are already working in. Traineeships are Government regulated which means the Trainee can feel comfortable knowing they are receiving a nationally recognised qualification which meets industry standards and also earning money while they learn. What are the types of Traineeships available? There are two types of Traineeships available within Australia which is purely work-based training. 2
New Entrant Traineeship: A New Entrant Trainee is a person who is fresh into starting with an Employer. The individual would have worked less than 3 months full-time or less than 12 months part-time in their current employment. Existing Worker Traineeship: This is an individual who has been working with the same company for a long period of time. Time frame for an existing worker Trainee is someone who has worked more than 3 months full-time or more than 12months part-time. What is the eligibility Criteria to become a Trainee? 1. You must be Employed on a Full-time or art-time basis 2. You must be an Australian Citizen, ermanent Resident or NZ pass holder in Australian with 6 months of residency 3. You must not have completed an Australian Diploma of higher qualification. 4. You must have a supervisor in the workplace who can monitor training and make workplace assessments 5. You must not be in paid employment by the State or Federal Government What are the benefits of becoming a Trainee? Cooperate with the employer in order to achieve the desired training outcomes Attend the off-the-job, external or no-the-job training as required Apply themselves to the agreed training plan Complete all of the work set by the Registered training organizations; and Keep a record of achievements both at work and training. 3

AOT has responsibilities to you as a trainee to provide you with a quality of services that will assist you as much possible in attaining your qualification. When can a trainee start their course and how long do they get to complete? As this course is delivered 100% online, you can start whenever you like, determining how long you have to complete your course however will depend on the qualification. Generally speaking most courses have 18-36 month durations. You can complete this course anytime within your course nominated duration time. Can a Trainee complete their course early? You can complete your selected course anytime within the nominated duration period. If you complete your course within 6 months of your start date, you will need to complete early completion papers; however this is organized for the Apprenticeship Centre. There are no restrictions around early completion as outcomes and achievement of job competency is paramount consideration. How will the learning take place? Will the trainee need to attend class? The course is delivered online and the traineeship is workplace based. Online resources, activities and reading materials are used to enhance workplace learning and assist with underpinning of skills and knowledge. As the majority of learning takes place in the workplace, we recommend participants be given 2-3 hours per week outside normal duties (in work time) to work on training activities. (lease note; In NSW participants MUST be given 3 hours structured withdrawal time per week). Do they need to sit exams? No, the program is competency based. Assessment is based on portfolio evidence, workplace assessment or online assessments. 5
If the trainee leaves the company, what will happen & what do we do? If a Trainee leaves his/her employment, the Company will need to cancel the Trainee s contract. This involves; 1. Contacting the Apprenticeship Centre to advise on traineeship being cancelled (You will be provided with contact information, on initial signup for traineeship contract) 2. Contacting AOT to advise on Traineeship being cancelled 3. Cancellation forms will need to be completed by the Employer, Employee and the Registered Training Organization (AOT), and mailed back to the Apprenticeship Centre for processing. If the Traineeship is cancelled, the Company will not receive the completion payment. The trainee can recommence their traineeship with a new Employer; however will need to contact AOT to organize this. We recommend that a Trainee recommence their course within 12months of cancelling, as training packages or courses can invariably change and this could affect recommencement. This funded training does not affect a trainee s salary or wages in any way if they are already employed within the organization. A Trainee can continue to work with no changes to pay or hours and the ease of online training will allow you to learn at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle and commitments. If you are commencing employment within a company, the Organization has the right to negotiate a pay scale for you, as you are not currently under a contractual agreement with them. How is the Government Incentives distributed to the company? 1. The Trainee will be required to complete a Training plan (provided after enrollment into course) and email it back to AOT immediately. AOT will have this information processed with the Apprenticeship Centre. 6
2. New Entrant Trainees only will receive Commencement Incentive claim forms at 6 months which are issued to the Company address for completion. This will need to be completed by the Employer, Employee and the RTO. 3. Your Apprenticeship Consultant will advise you of obligations and responsibilities and will be in contact throughout different stages of the Trainee s course to monitor progress. Your Apprenticeship Consultant will facilitate payment to the Company and provide support if required. 4. Once competencies of the Training plan have been achieved, the RTO will issue a nationally recognised qualification. New entrant and Existing worker Trainees at this stage will receive a final claim form to apply to completion incentive payments and/or other incentives which they are entitled to. (Depending on what funding pool is nominated will depend on incentives available to the employer).
