COURSE DESCRIPTION Theories, issues, and strategies related to the management of information as a corporate asset. All students have an email account in the MyCourses (Blackboard) program. Check your email on a daily basis. This communication link will provide another way to communicate with the instructor and other class members. You will be held responsible for any instructions or assignments that are transmitted via MyCourses (Blackboard) email. You can set your email in MyCourses (Blackboard) to forward to your normally used email account. However, you cannot send emails to me with your regular email account. You must go into MyCourses (Blackboard) to send any emails to me. I will not respond to emails sent outside of MyCourses (Blackboard). The reason for this is that I receive so many emails a day that I might miss an email in my regular account. Therefore I make it my policy to only answer student emails through MyCourses (Blackboard). Built into MyCourses (Blackboard) is a Who s Online feature. Here you can send an instant message and instigate a chat. Feel free to use that as well. TEACHING METHODS Lectures/Demonstrations: Important material from the text and outside sources will be covered by readings and in-class demonstrations/lectures/discussions. Discussion is not only encouraged, but required both in class and online, as are reports on studentprocured outside material relevant to topics assigned. Assignments: Projects and readings will be periodically assigned to help support and supplement material found in the lessons. These assignments may require the use of various software applications. Project: One team web site project will be required. This project will serve as part of the final exam for the course. Any student not taking an active part in the preparation of, and delivery of, the presentation of the project (which will be determined in a large part by your team members) will receive a zero on the final exam. This will result in a two-letter final course grade reduction. The project MAY NOT be completed individually for full credit. It MUST be a team project. Any member who is fired from the team (vote must be unanimous by other members of the team) or requests to leave a team, will be required to find another team that will allow him or her to join, or they will be required to complete the project alone. Since this is a team grade, doing the project alone means you were not able to work as part of a team, and there will be an automatic 25% deduction from the score received on your project. Those members who remain in a team on which they are not providing an equal share of work can still lose from one to two letter grades based on their team members' evaluation of their effort. The moral of the story is to communicate and do your part!! Internet Support: Hands-on use of the MyCourses (Blackboard) learning environment will be a required component in this course. Students will be responsible for checking MyCourses (Blackboard) for all assignments, methods of submission, and calendar due dates. Program Learning Outcomes: Program learning outcomes define the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to demonstrate upon completion of an academic program. These learning outcomes are regularly assessed to determine student learning and to evaluate overall program effectiveness. GENERAL STUDENT POLICIES Academic Integrity (A-9.1) Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; (2) submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the words or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit. Any student violating the honor code is subject to receive a failing grade for the course and will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs. If a student is unclear about whether a particular situation may constitute an honor code violation, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss the situation. For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. Such collaboration constitutes cheating. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another's work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own individual work. If you need help on an assignment, contact your instructor. Withheld Grades Semester Grades Policy (A-54) Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. same course in future terms, the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. Students with Disabilities To obtain disability-related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, Room 325, 468-3004 / 468-1004 (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations. Acceptable Student Behavior Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program (see the Student Conduct Code, policy D-34.1). Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be asked to leave class and may be subject to judicial, academic, or other penalties. This prohibition applies to all instructional forums, including electronic, classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The instructor shall have full discretion over what behavior is appropriate/inappropriate in the classroom. Students who do not attend class regularly or who perform poorly on class projects/exams may be referred to the Early Alert Program. This program provides students with recommendations for resources or other assistance that is available to help SFA students succeed. Children In Class Policy Only in extreme cases are children allowed in classroom or laboratory facilities, and then only with approval of the instructor prior to class. Electronic Devices In Class Policy Use of cellular phones, pagers, CD players, radios, and similar devices is prohibited in the classroom and laboratory facilities. Calculators and computers are prohibited during examinations and quizzes, unless specified. Reasonable laptop-size computers may be used in lecture for the purpose of taking notes or completing exercises. Submission Policy All assignments and projects are to be turned in on time. Assignments are generally to be submitted by uploading prior to the ending time indicated on the assignment. No excuses will be accepted for late work. When items must be printed, you will be instructed on the procedure for turning in printed materials. Assignments are due by the dates indicated. Work that is LATE will not be accepted for credit. Any and all assignments (with the exception of the final presentation and exam) can be turned in early. All writing assignments will be graded on both content and mechanics. Your work is a representation of you, and soon to be of the company for which you will be working. You need to avoid spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors in your writing in order to project a professional skill level. Accessing Grades Concern about your grade in this class should be demonstrated through your attendance and effort throughout the semester -- not by coming to the instructor the last week or two of class when it is too late. DO NOT ask me to change the grade you earn. I will not! You can access all of your grades for this course through MyCourses (Blackboard). All grades up to the final exam will be posted by two days prior to the final exam date. You should check these grades thoroughly, and email me in MyCourses (Blackboard) prior to the final exam day if you find any discrepancies. Unless you email me prior to the final exam, you indicate that you are in agreement with the grades posted. The final exam grades will be posted by 9 a.m. following the night of the exam. If you have any questions about the exam grade, you should email me in MyCourses (Blackboard) before 5 p.m. that same day. There are absolutely no changes once grades are submitted.
