ABOUT THE DEFENCE MATERIEL ORGANISATION The DMO buys and maintains equipment for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The DMO s first priority is to provide equipment & support for ADF units deployed on operations. On Defence s behalf, the DMO also manages one of the largest holdings of physical assets and inventory in the country. With budget of $9.7 billion in 2013 14, the DMO is managing over 180 major capital equipment projects and over 70 minor projects; it also sustains and upgrades over 100 existing fleets. The DMO signs approximately 2,500 contracts of $100,000 or more a year. The DMO s relationships with industry suppliers are critical to performance. Managing contracts is one of the key challenges for the DMO. 2

GS1NET / NPC GAP ANALYSIS & PILOT To determine how GS1net / NPC could be by DMO GS1 Australia conducted an analysis of Defence systems including: The Master Supplier Registry (MSR) Central registry for all approved DMO suppliers (Gap Analysis with GS1 Locatenet GS1 AU GLN Registry) The Military Integrated Logistics Information System (MILIS) MILIS is a single logistic information system to enable end-to-end management of Defence s integrated supply chain Pharmacy Integrated Logistics System (PILS) Used manage all pharmaceutical and medical supplies across the ADF's pharmacies CENCAT Used for NATO cataloguing and codification 4

GAP ANALYSIS RESULTS (CENCAT) Gap Analysis Data Attributes 9 CENCAT data fields were an exact match Name of equipment, Item Definition Text, Item Procurement Description, Reference Number, Logistics, and Type or Mode PLUS optionally UNSPSC Code, Currency Code, Unit Price and Attachment Flag 25 CENCAT data fields were a partial match requirement mapping in format and code values X21 CENCAT data fields were available (at the time) Outcome = The analysis revealed that information required for NATO Codification purposes is available in GS1net. 7

GAP ANALYSIS RESULTS (CENCAT) Gap Analysis - Codified Suppliers A mapping between UNSPSC Codes used in GS1net and NSG/NSC was developed in order to identify relevant product categories for analysis. The analysis revealed that 204 Defence codified suppliers are currently GS1net / NPC registered users. The suppliers are principally in the categories: 65 Medical, Dental, and Veterinary Equipment and Supplies 53 Hardware and Abrasives 68 Chemical and Chemical Products 75 Office Supplies and Devices 62 Lighting Fixtures and Lamps 51 Hand tools 8

NATO AC/135 AND GDSN PILOT NATO Group of National Directors on Codification (AC/135) Custodians of NATO Codification System MOU with NPSA for the provision of technical and admin support Australian participation in AC/135 = shared findings and recommendations of Australian study Discussions between NSPA & GS1 lead to GDSN pilot proposal: 1. Determine the range of data that could be exchanged = to define with more precision the crossover between GDSN and NCS data and develop a list of commodities that comprise the crossover. 2. Create a protocol for automated data exchange between GDSN and the NCS and then create and generate 100 transaction requests for data from each database across a representative cross section of commodities. 9
