COURSE DESCRIPTION: The HROP Careers in Public Safety program is designed to provide students with an understanding of the variety of agencies and employment opportunities available in the area of Public Safety. Although instructional emphasis will be in the field of Law Enforcement, there will also be instruction in Fire Science and Emergency Medical Response. Ultimately students will develop important skills to pursue a career in the Public Safety field depending on their interest as learned through this course. 6. HOURS: 180 7. PREREQUISTES: 16 years or older 8. DATE: August, 2005

9. CAREER PREPARATION: A. Essential Employability Skills: 1. Personal Skills a. Students will understand how personal skill development affects their employability. Students will understand the Police Officer Code of Ethics dealing with honesty. Students will understand the value of self-discipline and the need to maintain a positive attitude. 2. Interpersonal Skills a. Students will understand key concepts on group dynamics, conflict resolution, and negotiation. Students will be expected to break out into groups, and at times, take leadership of the groups. Students must work cooperatively and show respect for each other. Police Officers must understand sexual harassment laws as well as an appreciation of cultural diversity. This standard will be applied to students. 3. Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills a. Students will exhibit critical and creative thinking skills, logical reasoning, and problem solving. The class will review current events involving Police and then discuss/debate procedures/tactics leading to a successful resolution. 4. Communication Skills a. Students will understand principles of effective communication. Students are expected to take notes and prepare reports as well as make oral reports before the class. 5. Occupational Safety a. Students will understand occupational safety issues, including the avoidance of physical hazards in the work environment. Students will understand the importance of Officer Safety as it relates to Police work. Through review of Police scenarios, students will understand the need to follow basic tactics that lead to keeping Police Officers safe while on the job. 6. Employment Literacy a. Students will understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment within their chosen field. Students will prepare a resume, develop a portfolio, as well as practice interviewing skills. 7. Technology Literacy a. Students will understand and adapt to changing technology by identifying, learning, and applying new skills to improve job performance. Students will learn how technology has advanced in the field of Law Enforcement. The class will explore specific technological developments such as, in-part, mobile
