Practice Schedule Practicing is very important! You should aim to practice everyday in 10 minute sessions (for beginners). Use the chart below to keep a record of your practice sessions. If you are not sure what to practice, look at one of the example practice workouts in this book or ask your tutor. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday riday Saturday Sunday

Power hords These are the mostly widely used chords in Rock music. The musical name is a Root 5 hord but they are also known as power chords. They are popular because the same finger shape can be moved all over guitar. They fit into the category of moveable chords. They contain the root note (starting point), the 5th, and the root note an octave higher. Do Re Me a So La Ti Do 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Power hords with the root note on the 6th string. irst we need to learn the notes on the 6th string... E A 1st ret 3rd ret 5th ret The diagram on the left shows the guitar neck and the names of the natural notes on the 6th (E) string. You should memorise this so that you can find any power chord shape (or barr chord) with its root on this string. or instance, 5 can be found at the 6th string, 3rd fret. The diagram below is the power chord shape. Practice moving this shape up and down the 6th string to play the various chords. x x x B 7th ret 8th ret R D 10th ret 5th R E 12th ret

INTRO: ( very fast) x2 Verse 1. All the small things True care, truth brings I'll take one lift Youre ride, best trip Always I know You'll be at my show Watching, waiting ommiserating All the Small Things (Blink 182) PRE-HORUS Say it aint so i will not go Turn the lights off, carry me home (go quick from Pre-chorus to HORUS, ARIHT!!! HORUS Nana nana nana nana na na Nana nana nana nana na na x2 INTRO Verse 2. Late night, come home Work sucks, I know She left me roses by the stairs Surprises let me know she cares Pre-chorus: Say it aint so, i will not go Turn the lights off, carry me home HROUS Nana nana nana nana na na Nana nana nana nana na na

Power hords Sharps & lats Now that you have learnt all the natural notes on the 6th string, lets look at the other notes. Sharps use the symbol - # lats use the symbol - b Sharps and lats are the black keys on a piano, they come in between the natural notes with the exception of B - and E - where there is no sharp or flat. So the music alphabet goes - A, A#/Bb, B,, #/Db, D, D#/Eb, E,, #/b, E # # A A# B 1st ret 3rd ret 5th ret 7th ret 8th ret Important: Any sharp note is also a flat note. or example, sharp is also flat. A sharp is also B flat. A note is called a sharp when you are moving from a lower note, and called a flat when coming from a higher note. The diagram below is the power chord shape. Practice moving this shape up and down the 6th string to play the various chords. x x x # D 10th ret R D# E 12th ret 5th R

Power hords on the A String Now we know all the power (5th) chords on the 6th string. Lets have a look at the power chords with the root note on the 5th string. A A# B When playing these 5th chords (power chords) we do not play enough notes of a chord to be able to shape the chord into a major, minor or 7th. We are actually only playing to different notes with these chords. # D D# R E # 5th R # A

Barr hords If we take the open chord of E major and slide it up 1 fret it becomes major. But sliding the chord up isnt enough, we need to compensate for the open strings by barring the first fret. Root Note = E (open) E Major Root Note = (1st fret) Major E major chord moved up one fret Notice how the top three strings are the same position as a power chord. A power chord is simply a part of a barr chord. Once you can play the major barr chord, you can slide it up and down the fretboard. Using the notes on the 6th string as root notes. or example... If you play the major shape barr chord at the 3rd fret it would be a major.

Barr hords The open chords on the chord chart don't cover every chord. or instance, what about the sharps (#) and flats (b)? ortunately, By knowing just a few extra chord shapes, you can play just about any other chord you need. The chord shapes on the following chart can start from any fret. or instance, the 5th fret of the E string is the note A. So if you play the major form of the barre chord, it turns into A major. if you go to the 6th fret, it will become A# major. Let's try a few: Putting them into a chord structure, let's try: Bm - # - A - E B is on the second fret of the A string, and # is on the second fret of the E string. As for those power chords, about half of every rock song ever written is based in these, so learn them well! chances are you will get to use them.
