Dining Room The Home Collection In the 21st century, the layout of the traditional bourgeois home has almost changed beyond recognition. Today, the borders between kitchen, work area and dining space are less clearly defined, because life itself no longer creates such strict divisions. What do a business lunch and an open-plan kitchen have in common? They combine aspects of life that traditionally were separated in order to offer new and refreshing experiences of daily routines. One central aspect of tradition is still alive, however: the spirit of conviviality that for generations has brought families together for dinner at a long and grand table. Today, this very table is not only the focus of attention during celebrations. Its communicative qualities are also used to work from home, creating another reason for friends, family and work partners to gather together and fill this rather analogue hard disk of a table top with works and memories. The many ways of using the dining table create completely different surroundings in the very same room, depending on the time of day, transforming it into a conference room, a chess parlour, a sewing studio, a college library with books spread out or the stands of a spontaneously constructed Carrera racing set. This variety is reflected in the interior design of the room, which for some time has integrated elements from all aspects of life: art is spread out over the whole apartment and functions as a leitmotif connecting the rooms. An open kitchen is sometimes only separated from other parts of the room by an island or a freestanding bar. Toys from the playroom turn the dining table into a lively children s theatre and a little side table is used to deal with correspondence or for a quick breakfast on the go. The dining room was once reserved for the most important ritual of daily life: the family dinner. With a little help from multifunctional furniture it has become the scene of most of our daily activities. But dinner itself has changed, too. Influenced by the cooking shows now so prevalent in the media, we now add the sensual pleasures of cooking itself as an extra course to the classic dinner: surely the most enjoyable manifestation of lunch as business.
