Elise Jane Cox Hendrix, RN, RT(R) 1905-2002 Elise Jane Cox graduated from nursing school at the Park View Hospital School of Nursing in Rocky Mount NC in 1928 where she remained as supervisor until 1941. At age 35 Jane changed careers and entered Duke Hospital Technicians Program in Durham, NC. After graduation in 1943 she remained as a staff technologist until 1947. In 1947 she joined the staff in the physics department of the Women s College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Jane began her hobby while teaching a course in x-ray technology, and being a gardener, x-raying flowers was a good way to demonstrate contrast. 2
Jane needed an exhibit to take to the 1949 National Convention of X-ray Technicians so she showed some of her flower prints that she called Shadowgraphs. The exhibit won the top award at the convention and national recognition. The jonquil and orchid were selected for display at the 1949 International Photography-in-Science Salon exhibit sponsored by the Smithsonian Museum which then went on a world tour. Her work was on exhibit at the Weatherspoon Gallery in Greensboro, NC. In 1950 she had a one-woman exhibit of 33 pieces at the State Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC. Jane was active in the North Carolina State Society of Radiologic Technologist. Inc. She served as Secretary/Treasurer in 1946, President in 1948 and 1949, Delegate to the ASRT, ASRT Counselor from North Carolina from 1950 to 1955. She was honored for her dedication to education, professional ethics and her involvement in the NCSRT Inc. with Honorary membership and in 1983 presented the Reeves- Rousseau Memorial Lecture. 3
In 1959 nursing reclaimed her as Resident Director at Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1971 Jane married William Pen Hendrix and retired from professional life. 4
Jane Cox Hendrix Scholarship History In 2002 the North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technologists Inc. established a scholarship to honor the memory of Jane Cox Hendrix, RN, RT(R) who passed away. The purpose of the scholarship is to aid either graduate or undergraduate radiologic technology students. Jane Cox received her X-ray training at Duke University Medical Center and was active in the NCSRT, Inc. as President and served as ASRT Counselor to North Carolina. She was employed by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to teach x-ray physics in the late 40 s. While there she experimented with x- raying flowers using a superficial therapy 5
machine. Her Shadowgraphs won national recognition for an individual technical exhibit at the 1949 ASRT meeting in San Francisco. Her technique was printed in the 1953 ASRT Journal. In addition her work was exhibited at the State Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC and two of her prints went on world tour with the International Photography-in-Science Salon exhibit with the Smithsonian Institute. Jane was honored with Honorary membership in the NCSRT, Inc. and in 1983 presented the Reeves- Rousseau Memorial lecture. When Jane married William P. Hendrix she retired from professional life and left a legacy of beauty for all to enjoy. The NCSRT, Inc. has commissioned reprints of her flowers to be sold in order to fund the scholarship.
