Finger Lakes Instrumentation J. C. Smith, FLI IMG 6303 Cooled, Low-Noise CCD Cameras for Astronomy, Spectroscopy & Biological Applications Manufacturing p remium CCD cameras and accessories since 1995

Finger Lakes Instrumentation Introduction FLI produces cooled low-noise CCD cameras for astronomy, spectroscopy & biological applications. We have been manufacturing premium CCD cameras and accessories since 1995. Our goal is to produce the finest CCD cameras and accessories available at reasonable prices. Customer satisfaction is our number one priority. FLI Cameras Both the MaxCam and IMG cameras are designed to use several types of CCDs that include: Full frame front-illuminated, full frame back-illuminated, and interline sensors. (Depending upon the sensor size and type, various sensor defect classifications are available.) Regardless of which sensor is used, every FLI camera delivers uncompromised performance and image quality. Available Sensors: KODAK E2V Fairchild Imaging SITe The MaxCam imagers are small form-factor, cost effective imaging solutions that employ research grade sensors from Kodak and E2V. The IMG series utilize large array sensors (up to 16 megapixel) and state of the art electronics for low noise, high cooled operation. Back-Illuminated research grade sensors from SITE, E2V and Fairchild Imaging are available. Front-illuminated and interline sensors from Kodak are available. Advanced design, vigorous testing, unmatched cooling performance, high quality machined construction and superior electronics guarantee long life and excellent performance Monochrome and Colour Sensors Monochrome sensors are generally employed due to their wide spectral range (200nm-1100nm) and high quantum efficiencies (up to 93%). High quality colour images can be obtained in conjunction with the FLI s filter wheels and digital focusers. FLI also employs single shot colour sensors. M101: John C. Smith - IMG6303E & CFW-7 Sensor Cooling All FLI cameras incorporate fan-assisted 2 and 3 stage TEC cooling that reduces the temperature of the sensor up to 40 o C (MaxCam) and 60 o C (IMG) below ambient. While water-cooling is available on all cameras as standard, it is generally not required to reach the desired operating temperatures. Due to our camera s solid design and use of advanced thermal transfer compounds and implementation techniques, they do not suffer from

thermal runaway nor require special cooling techniques or precautionary measures. We are constantly searching for improvements in materials and thermal interfaces. Camera Windows All camera windows are multicoated to preserve the sensor s important quantum efficiency (an uncoated window will have a loss of ~ 4% per side, giving an average transmission of only 92.16%.) The average transmission of an FLI camera window is between 99% and 99.7%. Quartz, fused silica and custom ultra-high tolerance windows are available. Sensor Cover Slips Sensor cover slips introduce the double threat of internal reflections and reduced overall camera QE. The QE lost due to a cover slip is dependant upon the cover slip's material but ANY digital imaging system using a sensor with a cover slip will suffer QE losses that an identical imaging system without a cover slip will not. More significantly, a cover slip introduces aberrations into your image that software cannot remove. Sensors without cover slips are installed at our laboratory at no extra cost. IC434 & B33: Richard Crisp IMG1024S Sensor Coatings Sensor coatings to enhance the CCD s performance are available. Quantum Efficiency can rise dramatically to 93% under certain wavelengths to reveal additional detail and reduce exposure times resulting to images of exceptional quality. Options include Ultra-violet (UVAR), multi-band and broadband coatings. Software Control FLI cameras come complete with control software and support Windows and Linux. A Windows/Linux developers SDK is also available as are a series of libraries for interfacing FLI devices through MATLAB; a package with robust tools for mathematical computation, analysis, visualization, and algorithm development. Accessories FLI has earned an excellent reputation for its high quality accessories including the Precision Digital Focuser and Filter Wheels. FLI also supplies a range of scientific grade filters and adaptors. FIG 1: E2V CCD47-10 sensor Quantum Efficiency Ordering your Camera A large number of combinations of camera bodies, sensors, coatings and cover slips are available to build a camera that will best suit your requirements. Please visit www.opticstar.com for more information or contact us to discuss your application.

IMG Research Grade CCD Camera The IMG represents FLI s flagship imaging product and comes with a range of sensors from Kodak, E2V, SITe and Fairchild Imaging with resolutions of up to 16 Megapixels and Quantum Efficiencies (QE) of up to 93% at 600nm and a spectral range of 200nm to 1100nm. QE is the measure of how effective an imager is at producing an electronic charge from incoming light. This is particularly important for low light sources and faint objects. IMGX NGC 7923: Richard Crisp IMG6303E Special sensor coatings can be employed that will increase the sensor s QE at certain ranges to best suit customer applications. Midband, broadband and UV coatings are available from E2V. To further ensure the highest QE, all IMG camera Windows have 12 layers of Super Multicoating (6 layers per side) that produce an average transmission of 99.7%! (An uncoated window will have a loss of approximately 4% per side, giving an average transmission of only 92.16%) The IMG benefits from 2 or 3 stage TEC cooling that can decrease sensor temperature by 50-60 o C below ambient. Along with superior electronics and implementation methods, our cameras are head and shoulders below the competition when it comes to noise. (Note: FLI cameras will reach and maintain low CCD temperatures without special cooling procedures or fear of thermal runaway.) All FLI cameras have water cooling provision. A network of small water channels are machined into each camera baseplate which allow water to flow directly under the Peltier cooler. While these passages do not effect normal camera operations, they are available if water-cooling is desired. Simply attach tubing to access ports, supply water flow and your CCD camera is water cooled! Each complete IMG and MaxCam imager comes with: Camera body with built in tripod mount Thermo-electrical cooling Stainless steel shutters o Field replaceable o Location outside of the sensor chamber - will never drop material onto your CCD! High quality scientific grade sensor Camera power supply USB interface & cable Multi-Platform camera control software included o Runs under Windows and Linux, System independent o JAVA GUI, MATALAB & Maxim DL/CCD support CD-ROM with images, installation instructions and software One Year Warranty on Parts and Labor

MAXCAM Scientific Grade Imager The MaxCam range employs the latest sensor technology from Kodak and E2V. Kodak sensors employ a microlens array and special MAR protective cover slip, this results to peak quantum efficiencies of 83%. Equally the E2V sensors offer a variety of coatings delivering highly efficient imagers over wide spectral ranges at peak quantum efficiencies of 93%. MAXCAM M42: Ron Wodaski CM10-ME All MaxCam and IMG cameras are compatible with all FLI accessories including the FLI CFW Colour Filter Wheels and the redesigned FLI Digital Focusers. The MaxCam benefits from 2 stage TEC cooling that will decrease sensor temperature by 40 o C. (Noise is reduced by half for every 6 o C of temperature drop.) Reducing noise is vital for low light imaging or detecting faint objects. FLI cameras attain specified temperature drops unlike competitors cameras that fall well below advertised specifications. All FLI cameras have water cooling available. A network of small water channels are machined into each MaxCam baseplate which allow water to flow directly under the Peltier cooler. While these passages do not effect normal camera operations, they are available if water-cooling is desired. Simply attach tubing to access ports, supply water flow and your MaxCam CCD camera is water cooled! Every MaxCam Kit comes complete with: Camera body with tripod mount USB interface USB cable (extenders available) 15 foot camera cable TEC cooling (operates @ 35 to 40 degrees below ambient temperature) Stainless steel shutters o Field replaceable o Location outside of the sensor chamber - will never drop material onto your CCD!
