Preface The 15th Euralex International Congress is the first congress in this series to be held in Norway. We welcome you to the University of Oslo, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, Section of Lexicography, on behalf of the organizing committee, the University of Oslo and The Language Council of Norway, and are proud to present these proceedings of all presentations to be given at the congress. The language situation in Norway is different from that of most other European countries, since we have two written standards for the same language. Norwegians are used to frequent changes in the orthography and several official spelling variants of the same word. This state of affairs is due to a high acceptance for dialectal variation, and an unusually high respect for individual integrity. But it makes life complicated for lexicographers. The Norwegians are more used to orthographic word lists than to ordinary dictionaries, a fact that is reflected in the dictionary tradition in Norway, where the dictionary culture is not yet very well developed. We are still facing challenges in our efforts to achieve a modern quality of the documentation of our total vocabulary; some of these are due to language politics and disagreement between the different groups. This setting is part of the reason that the main topic for this congress was chosen to be lexicography and national identity, and we are pleased that several of the presentations in the proceedings are discussing or touching upon this complex topic. Hosting an international congress in lexicography is a great inspiration in our endeavours to developing modern and explanative dictionaries for both variants of the Norwegian language, as well as for minority languages, like Saami and the Norwegian sign language. We hereby follow the Euralex-tradition of presenting the proceedings at the opening of the congress, which means that the editing period had to be somewhat hectic, with few possibilities and short deadlines for the authors to incorporate comments from the reviewers and editors. We hope, even so, that these proceedings will help the congress participants to choose the presentations of their interest, and have a better background for taking part in the discussions after the presentations. VII

The abstracts in the proceedings are structured according to the different sessions in the congress and cover the following topics: Lexicography and identity, indigenous languages Corpus-driven lexicography Lexicography and language technology Multilingual lexicography Lexicography and semantic theory Terminology, LSP and lexicography Dictionary use, pedagogical lexicography Phraseology and collocations Morphology Idioms Lemma selection Reports on lexicographical projects Other topics In addition there are abstracts for demonstrations and posters; these are not categorized for topics. The plenary speakers have been invited to shed light on topics we consider important and challenging in modern lexicography: Ole Henrik Magga is presenting the challenges of lexicography for indigenous languages, exemplified by Saami, Arnfinn Muruvik Vonen is discussing the situation of diversity in different written standards of the same language, Bolette Sanford Pedersen gives an overview of the synergy between language technology and lexicography, Michael Rundell of the schism between theory and practice in lexicography, after several years of intense theory development in the field of lexicography. Finally Gilles- Maurice de Schryver presents a summary of the trends in modern lexicography and comments on the presentations of the congress in the light of his crystal ball. The editors owe a special thank you to de Schryver for extra input in organizing the content of the proceedings. Kjersti Wictorsen Kola has been checking several of the reference lists, Julie Matilde Torjusen has conscientiously accomplished all the rest of the practical editing work. The contributions in the proceedings include both full plenary papers, and abstracts of long and short normal papers, student papers, demonstrations VIII

and posters. The full papers of all presentations are to be found on a memory stick accompanying the printed book. All accepted papers have been anonymously reviewed by a minimum of two independent peer reviewers. In this process nearly 30 % of the submitted papers were rejected, which indicates, we think, a high quality of the accepted papers. We want to thank all authors and reviewers who have contributed to these proceedings, and hope that the participants of the 15th Euralex International Congress will have a good reading time, as well as an enjoyable congress and visit to Oslo.
