Places in the Balkan Peninsula (such as Bosnia) were still being controlled by Austria-Hungary. How did this create further tension in the Balkans? Which specific group hated Austrian presence in the Balkans? 3. What is Pan-Slavism? Where in Europe do some of these Slavic groups live? How did Pan- Slavism contribute to tension in the Balkans? Define Stalemate: Describe why this happened during World War I. Part IV - Deadlock 2. What was Trench Warfare? Describe a soldier s experiences in the Trenches (ie: German, French, etc.). What was a normal day like? Find a diary or journal entry of a soldier who endured such fighting. In detail, describe what they dealt with (in terms of weather, disease, food, etc.).
