I. About this Handbook The Campus Asia-EAUI Program Office has compiled this handbook to promote student understanding about its joint education and research programs. Please use the handbook to learn about various aspects of the Campus Asia-EAUI Program such as the Campus Asia-EAUI Program Certificate of Completion and the Semester Exchange Program. Note: The information in the handbook is accurate as of September 2013. The handbook is updated each academic year. It may be revised during an academic year if there is a major change in the program. Please make sure to consult the latest edition of the handbook on the following webpage: http://www.waseda.jp/gsaps/eaui/index_en.html II. Overview of the Campus Asia-EAUI Program 1. From Waseda Campus to Campus Asia In 2011 the proposal for an East Asian University Institute (EAUI) for Asian Regional Integration, led by the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS)of Waseda University was approved by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology under the Re-Inventing Japan Project. This concept will receive subsidies from MEXT through academic year 2015 for a Campus Asia Core Center formed by a coalition of five universities: Korea University (Korea), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Peking University (PRC) Thammasat University (Thailand). The center will run education programs in Asian regional cooperation and integration as well as programs of joint research. The central objective of this initiative is the establishment of the East Asian University Institute (EAUI) as a permanent center for graduate education about Asian regional integration in 2020. And the goal of the EAUI will be to foster young scholars with high levels of expertise capable of contributing to the realization of both global and regional public interests. Participation in the EAUI project will also be opened to graduate students enrolled in member universities of the graduate student exchange league (University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Keio University and Waseda University), as well as students enrolled at leading ASEAN universities. The goal is to open the project further in the future to universities associated with the Universitas 21 and APRU programs. While working toward a credit transfer system, each partner university will exchange up to 40 students with Waseda University every year. Member institutions will take turns hosting intensive summer/winter schools as a way to facilitate student exchange. These endeavors will serve as a forum for participants to come up with practical solutions for problems in the region as well as fostering young researchers and leaders. At the same time, the faculty members of the five universities will hold joint meetings in order to discuss how to strengthen support for students and how to better integrate and coordinate classroom instruction and program management. A third party evaluation committee will be established to evaluate the implementation and status of the initiative and to offer recommendations for improvement. For more details, see the following website: http://www.waseda.jp/gsaps/eaui/index_en.html 2. Feedbacks from Past Program Participants Tomoyuki NAGASAWA Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, 2 nd Year MA Student I went to Thammasat University as the first participant of this program. It was far more meaningful time than I expected. In every class, I could obtain new perspectives through the active discussions with classmates who have various backgrounds. Also, it was really precious time for me to chat with classmates outside a classroom. Especially, it was extremely meaningful to talk with them about some social issues, such as Japan-China relations and Japan-Thailand relations. I feel that these small chat do play an important role on mutual understandings for the people who live in East Asia. Since I wanted to talk with local people, I was learning Thai outside the university. Although it was only 4 months, I became able to have easy conversation in Thai, and my scope of communication was far more expanded. I felt keenly the importance of language skills on mutual understanding. To exchange opinions among the students from various countries who is studying in the same fields and understanding of each country by students who take the future of East Asia. I believe that to accumulate these small efforts would be quite important to realize peaceful East Asia. I am sure that this program is quite significant for today s East Asia. Keiko NOGUCHIGraduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, 2 nd Year MA Student During the fall semester, I studied at Korea University through the Semester Exchange Program by the East Asian University Institute (EAUI) for Asian Regional Integration. Korea and Japan are geographically close and we can find some parallels between two countries in such areas as culture and language. I felt that Asian countries, Japan and Korea in particular, share the same values. However, at the same time, I had the opportunity to experience Asia s multicultural and diverse society. My school life was a very fruitful and entertaining in the well-appointed learning environment. I was blessed with wonderful professors, friends and everyone whom I met in Korea. In January 2013, we launched the Alumni Association in order to bring together students from 5 universities who joined 2012 Fall Semester Exchange Program. The purpose of this Association is to facilitate communication, encourage friendship and to contribute to the Campus Asia program which aims to establish the EAUI by sharing our experiences or exchanging opinions through using this Alumni s network. This process has just begun, as we are the first participants in this semester exchange program. Although we are still choosing our paths, I hope that this network can help regional integration and development in Asia, irrespective of countries and universities. 4. Summer School/Winter School 4.1.
