LOW EMISSIVITY CEILINGS Emissivity- Describes the ability of a certain material to radiate heat rather then absorb it. Materials that radiate 100% have an (EM) of 1.0, while materials that radiate no heat have an EM of 0. Typical arena ceiling materials (wood, steel, concrete) have a high EM rating around.9, radiating about 90% of the heat absorbed back down onto that ice surface. Radiant heat always travels from a warm surface to a cold surface, so we know that the major heat load in an ice arena is coming from the ceiling. The amount of heat that is radiated onto the ice surface is directly decided by the EM rating of the arenas ceiling materials. Thus, reducing the EM of your arena ceiling will have a large impact on the heat load to your ice plant, which will greatly reduce running costs and provides much better ice conditions in many ways. This will also create a harder ice surface and increase the candle power on the ice by up to 50% on most installation applications. Low E ceiling materials usually have an EM rating around 0.05, Reflectix insulation has a EM of just 0.032, which is the reason Reflectix is the original and most effective product for your Low-E ceiling. It is important to make sure you know what product is going into your arena, there are other Low-E products in the market that have different specifications and are designed for other purposes. There are many different ways that a Low-E ceiling can be installed, depending upon the overall look required, roof type, lighting positioning, and ceiling height. For faster service on obtaining a quote for a Low-E ceiling for your arena, it is beneficial to have digital photos of your ceiling and surrounding areas of your rink that can be easily emailed upon request. The installation of a Low-E ceiling in your facility will provide you with many benefits. An increase of up to 50% in candle power on the ice surface, as well as the most beneficial factor of a 15% to 20% reduction in refrigeration costs. The other benefits include a reduction or complete elimination of condensation, improved acoustics as well as building aesthetics. THE REFLECTIX ADVANTAGE Most people have heard of, or are familiar with, Low Emissivity ceilings. Their primary function is to block radiant energy emitted from the ceiling structure. This has the effect of reducing the heat load on the ice, thus reducing run time on the refrigeration system. This translates into energy savings and reduced maintenance costs on the system. Reflectix does more because it is also an insulation. Following are some advantages of using Reflectix and the benefits to the operator of a facility. 1. Improved Aesthetics: Many buildings could use an improvement in appearance, especially the older wooden structures, or those where the insulation has suffered considerable damage. It has the effect of giving the building a new look. 2. Enhanced Illumination: Aluminum is a highly reflective material. This is the reason that many customers have experienced a 40 55 % increase in candle power at ice level. It will reduce the glare and shadows very effectively. When contemplating new lights, it is an excellent idea to put in a refective insulation in the ceiling because it will reduce the lighting requirements. 3. Acoustics Improvements: Reflectix will improve the quality of sound because of the air bubbles inside the insulation. It has a cushioning effect that will change the reverberations in a positive manner. It can also reduce the noise level in a building. 4. Condensation Reduction: Condensation has a deteriorating effect on steel and wood. In a colder climate hoar frost accumulates on the ceiling structure if the insulation and vapour barrier are damaged or if there is no insulation at all. When Reflectix is installed, it creates a vapour barrier and a thermal break, thus eliminating condensation on the underside of the roof structure. 5. Increased R-Value: When Refectix is installed, it blocks off an upper air space. This increases the R-Value of a roof structure because the air space becomes and excellent insulator. Bulk insulations do not increase the R-Value; they reduce convection currents. R-Value is only a measurement of the resistance to heat flow in the conductive mode. Air, being a very low density material, is the best insulator against heat flow by conduction. During the cold winter months, Refectix will help to reduce heat loss by conduction. 6. Reduction of Energy, Operating and Maintenance Costs: The primary function of Refectix is to block the flow of Radiant Heat or Infrared. Studies have shown that about 28 % of the heat load on the ice is in the form of radiant energy. Aluminum has the physical characteristic of blocking radiant energy by about 96%. This has the effect of reducing the heat load on the ice, thus reducing run time on the refrigeration equipment. Some of our customers are saving as much as $ 1000.00 per month on their energy consumption. This does not include the reduced costs on maintenance due to the reduced run time. Since Reflectix is an insulation, it will also reduce heating costs if the building is heated. Refectix will pay for itself in three to six years, depending on whether you have ice for six or twelve months of the year. 7. The Low E ceiling installation can put you into a positive cash flow.

HEAT LOADS - ICE RINKS The total heat load is comprised of a number or elements that can vary greatly; most can be controlled, and some eliminated, as the following table illustrates. Ice Rink Heat Loads, Indoor Rinks Approximate maximum Maximum reduction through Load Source percentage of total load, % design and operation, % Conductive loads: Ice Resurfacing 12 60 System pump work 15 60 Ground heat 4 80 Header heat gain 2 40 Skaters 4 0 Convective loads: Rink air temperature 13 50 Rink humidity 15 40 Radiant loads: Ceiling radiation 28 80 Lighting radiation 7 40 Total: 100 Convective loads can be reduced by controlling the rink air temperature and humidity. Radiant heat loads to the ice sheet can be reduced significantly by the installation of a low emissivity insulation. In addition, since the ceiling is not cooled by radiant heat loss, its temperature is maintained above the dew point of rinks air, often eliminating condensation, ceiling dripping, and resultant deterioration of materials.

SPECIFICATIONS OF REFLECTIX 1. It is a 5/16 thick reflective insulation using two aluminum surfaces separated by two layers of encapsulated air. 2. It weighs 1.25 oz per sq. ft. 3. Temperature range from -60 F to +180 F. 4. Flame spread rating is 5. * 5. Smoke development rating is 5. * 6. Perm. Rating is 0. ** Classified as a vapour barrier under the national building code. 7. Emissivity rating is.032. *** It reflects up to 97% of radiant heat or infrared waves thereby reducing energy consumption. 8. Has a puncture resistance of 60 lb./sq. in. 9. Increases illumination if left exposed 10. Reflectix is approved as a thermal insulation by Power Smart. 11. It also carries the CSA mark for hot water tank thermal insulation blanket. 12.
