General information Product overview The Danfoss 2 x 24 serial display module is designed for the demanding operating conditions and environments common to mobile machine applications. The display module integrates an industry standard New Twisted Nematic (NTN) LCD alpha numeric display glass with robust high impact plastic packaging and interface electronics allowing installation in no cab and open cab machines. Superior readability in all ambient light conditions is accomplished through the use of a transflective, backlit type of display with dark characters on a green background. An adjustable viewing angle option (controlled via software) allows machine operators to adjust display contrast to compensate for changing light conditions and operator position. Character clarity is enhanced by a 5 x 7 dot matrix character. 2 x 24 display modules are designed to be used in conjunction with Danfoss microcontrollers via RS232 serial communication. Danfoss electronics embedded in the display module convert serial character transmission to the parallel format required by the display. Features Cost effective alpha numeric display Rugged mechanical design for mobile applications IP 65 rating above panel rating; resistant to high pressure wash down Built in Danfoss serial to parallel card allows easy communication with display driver LED backlight for very low light conditions Dark characters on green background; excellent visibility in a wide variety of ambient light conditions Suitable for 12 and 24 volt systems; option for 5 volt power Extended operating temperature range Operates in conjunction with most Danfoss microcontrollers Fixed and operator adjustable viewing angles Available models 2 x 24 Character Serial Display modules part numbers Obsolete Replaced by Supply voltage and viewing position Recommended microcontroller 10104202 11076372 5 to 15 Vdc; direct horizon view, adjustable S2X, MC300 10105224 11076377 5 to 15 Vdc; 30 to 45 above horizon, adjustable S2X, MC300 10104198 11076366 5 to 15 Vdc; Direct horizon view, not adjustable S2X, MC300 10104210 11076389 9 to 32 Vdc; Direct horizon view, adjustable S1X, MC400 10105225 11076396 9 to 32 Vdc; 30 to 45 above horizon, adjustable S1X, MC400 10104206 11076382 9 to 32 Vdc; Direct horizon view, not adjustable S1X, MC400 4 11017626 Rev 0101 November 2015
General information Theory of operation Danfoss 2 x 24 Display Modules are designed to operate in conjunction with Danfoss microcontrollers. The generation of display messages is typically an integral part of the application program running in the microcontroller. Character information is transmitted from the microcontroller to the display module via RS232 standard signal levels and protocol operating at 9600 Baud. Danfoss proprietary interface electronics embedded in the display module converts microcontroller serial data to the parallel data format required by the LCD display driver. The Display Module is a receive only device and does not return any information to the microcontroller. Display readability is influenced by two parameters: The operator s spatial relationship to the display and the display viewing angle (also referred to as viewing cone). Spatial relationship can be described as either direct horizon view or 30 to 45 degrees above horizon. See the following illustration. Display viewing angle can be either fixed or variable. Fixed viewing angle displays have a factory set voltage that cannot be adjusted after manufacture. Variable viewing angle (also referred to as contrast) is controlled by varying the voltage applied to the capacitive fluid in the display glass which changes the alignment of display particles. Variable displays allow the user to adjust display glass contrast control voltage in a step-wise manner through software control from the microcontroller. The display voltage control range is controlled over 100 steps. Variable displays are typically used in applications where there is no cab and variable lighting conditions. Displays with variable viewing angles will default to the most recent control voltage at power-up. Product installation Machine wiring guidelines Protect wires from mechanical abuse, run wires in flexible metal or plastic conduits. Use 85 C (185 F) wire with abrasion resistant insulation and 105 C (221 F) wire should be considered near hot surfaces. Use a wire size that is appropriate for the module connector. Separate high current wires such as solenoids, lights, alternators or fuel pumps from sensor and other noise-sensitive input wires. Run wires along the inside of, or close to, metal machine surfaces where possible, this simulates a shield which will minimize the effects of EMI/RFI radiation. Do not run wires near sharp metal corners, consider running wires through a grommet when rounding a corner. Do not run wires near hot machine members. Provide strain relief for all wires. Avoid running wires near moving or vibrating components. Avoid long, unsupported wire spans. Ground electronic modules to a dedicated conductor of sufficient size that is connected to the battery (-). Power the sensors and valve drive circuits by their dedicated wired power sources and ground returns. Twist sensor lines about one turn every 10 cm (4 in). Use wire harness anchors that will allow wires to float with respect to the machine rather than rigid anchors. C Caution Unused pins on mating connectors may cause intermittent product performance or premature failure. Plug all pins on mating connectors. W Warning Unintended movement of the machine or mechanism may cause injury to the technician or bystanders. Improperly protected power input lines against over current conditions may cause damage to the hardware. Properly protect all power input lines against over-current conditions. 11017626 Rev 0101 November 2015 11
