The proposed AKC draft test would evaluate a working dog s ability to pull and maneuver a cart over a prescribed course. Courses are designed to simulate the path from farm to market and would include obstacles that increase in difficulty as the title level increases. If approved, the pass/fail AKC draft test would require the dog to demonstrate basic obedience commands, the dog's willingness to be harnessed, and the dog's maneuverability with the cart. Clubs holding AKC sanctioned draft tests must have enough space to accommodate a 1/2 mile course and a 10,000 square foot ring (e.g. 100 x 100 ), and are required to hire two approved AKC drafting judges. Clubs that offer draft tests will be responsible for the costs associated with hiring two judges, providing the necessary equipment, procuring exhibition space, and other expenses associated with hosting events. It will likely be necessary to charge a higher event service fee for all newly added AKC events to offset costs associated with developing the sport, and recording entries for the sport, particularly if the number of events/entries is anticipated to be low.
