Light and your body Light means life. Many of the processes of life are influenced by light and its intensity. As many of you may experience in winter, the lack of sunlight may make you to feel less energetic than how you feel during summer. Furthermore, we feel more tired in darker environments (e.g. business presentations with room lighting off), and more awake in bright light (e.g. driving in the sun). The amount of light that stimulates the receptors in our eyes affect how we feel. Light affects our alertness and energy level. Bright light has been known to successfully provide mood relief especially for seasonal mood swings. Lightphoria Energy Light is a convenient and effective way of making up for the lack of light, without the need of medication. This device uses very bright light (approx. 5,000 lux, 8,000 lux or 10,000 lux) to simulate natural sunlight whilst eliminating the dangerous UV rays. Lux is the measurement for the brightness of the light. For example: a sunny summer day has about 50,000 lux, the regular light inside a office building has only 500 lux. This product should be used regularly over a lengthy period (on a daily basis for 1 week) and should be consumed in addition to daylight and artificial lighting. Just like any source of light, it is not recommended to look straight into the light. Instructions 1)Place the Lightphoria on a solid surface such as a table. Adjust the folding tripod. Place the unit at an angle to your body to avoid looking at the device directly. 2)Place the device 12 24 = 30 60 cm from your face. You can read, eat, work at the computer, watch TV or exercise while you use the device. For best results, place the device at the same level as your chest, i.e. place it on a table at which you are sitting. 3)Plug in the unit and switch on the light by pressing the ON/OFF button (2). It automatically presets to HI light intensity setting on start up. Press MID or LOW to change the light intensity. 4)DO NOT STARE INTO THE LIGHT OF THE LED PANEL. IT IS SUFFICIENT THAT THE LIGHT REACHES YOUR EYES INDIRECTLY FROM THE SIDE. Use your Lightphoria in a well-lit room to minimize eye strain. 5)Select the exposure time with the auto-off programmable timer for 15, 30 or 45 minutes by pressing the corresponding buttons. Most people get beneficial results from 15 to 45 minutes of usage each day. You can start using the Lightphoria at LOW intensity and increase the light intensity as you progress. 6)Press OFF to turn the device off at any time. When shall I use the Lightphoria? Using the Lightphoria at any time of day directly affects your alertness. The best time to use it is in the morning. Do not use the device late in the evening. If you use it within 3 hours of going to bed, it could disrupt your sleep. If you find it difficult to get up each day without an alarm clock or if you often sleep in, you need morning light. Use the Lightphoria within the first two hours after waking up. If you find it difficult to stay awake in the late evening and wake up too early in the morning, you need evening light. Use the Lightphoria whenever you feel tired. If mornings or evenings do not seem to be the problem, but you feel generally tired during the day, then the time at which you use the Lightphoria is not as important. You can use the device in the morning or around midday. For example, when you wake up in the morning, use it for 15 to 30 minutes and then again at midday or in the evening for approximately the same amount of time. Place the device further away from you during the evening session. Do not use the device within two hours of your desired bedtime or you may not be able to fall asleep. When you have finished using the unit, switch it off by pressing the ON/OFF button (2). Once the light is switched off and you may then unplug the adapter. 4
Jet lag Rapidly traveling across several time zones creates disharmony between your internal body clock and the new external time. This not only causes sleeping problems, but influences your mood and energy level as well. If you stay for more than a few days, you may also want to shift your body clock to the new time zone. This will help you sleep better and be more alert and energetic when you need to. Because bright light is effective for shifting circadian rhythms, your Lightphoria energy light can quickly adjust your rhythm to the new time zone. One of the best strategies to combat jet lag is to shift your body clock a day or two before you leave. Traveling east: When you travel east, start using the Lightphoria energy light in the morning two to three days before you leave. The number of time zones you travel corresponds to the hours your body clock has to shift. If you are only traveling a few time zones, one day s preparation is sufficient. Add a day of using this device for each additional 2 time zones. For example, for a trip from the US to Europe, use the following schedule: On the first day, wake up an hour early and use the Lightphoria energy light for 30 45 minutes. On the next day or days, you should wake up a couple of hours earlier and repeat this process. You should advance your bedtime accordingly. Once you arrive at your destination, avoid light before 10 a.m. local time (wear sunglasses) and use the Lightphoria energy light in the midmorning to fully adjust to the local time. When returning, use your Lightphoria energy light in the late evening for a couple of nights before the return flight. On the last night of the trip, try to stay up and use your Lightphoria energy light as late as reasonably possible past midnight. On the day of the flight, avoid any bright light until after 2:00 p.m. (see below under Traveling west ) Traveling west: Since most people s body clocks adjust more easily to later time zones, you should not have to use the Lightphoria energy light when you travel 3 time zones or less. You should only need to use your Lightphoria energy light for one day before traveling 4 time zones, and add an additional preparation day for each 3 time zones. You should not have to use the Lightphoria energy light for more than 3 days, even on the longer westbound trips. For example, when traveling from London to Los Angeles, use your Lightphoria energy light for 30 45 minutes in the late evening (and again a couple of hours later, if you can) each night, starting 2-3 days before you leave. Use the Lightphoria energy light 2-3 hours later each successive night. When you arrive at your destination, try to stay awake until bedtime and avoid bright evening light (wear sunglasses) for the first few days. Before you travel home, avoid any bright afternoon and evening light and use your Lightphoria energy light in the morning for a few days (see above under Traveling east ). 5
General information The adapter is equipped with an automatic voltage selector and is suitable for mains voltages ranging from 100 to 240 volts.
