ABOUT LUMINEX A/S LUMINEX strive to make the light come alive. We strive to improve the wellbeing and comfort of our customers and employees. LUMINEX is the leading manufacturer and distributor of full dynamic LED circadan rhythm lighting in Denmark. We offer the first real circadian rhythms controlled LED RGBWW installation in the world. Not only driven as pilot project but run as full dynamic circadian rhythms installations. The LED boards are produced in Denmark and the controller is developed by Danish engineers and also produced in Denmark. The luminary are all assembled and tested in Denmark before shipment, to ensure that all its components comply to the very highest quality standards. Our product range is mainly developed for hospitals and elderly-building with RGBWW (W2700K and White 6500K) and also we made board with amber and turquoise so total up till 7 channels are managed by one PCB. We run the luminary with our own developed zone controls + separate power supply for DMX, Dali, 1-10V and also KNX is possible. Also we managed to control a lot of Input/Output interfaces for standard equipment in the marked. The idea of full dynamic light (red, green, blue, whit 2700K and white 6500K + amber and turquoise) healthcare (circadian rhythm, therapy light and surgeon-light) emerged among users in the hospital sector who felt a need for better lighting in hospitals and elderly-buildings. LUMINEX sets the bar extremely high when it comes to its production processes and the materials it uses. Also the software and hardware are tested and addressed before shipment. We offer a worldwide firmware update when it comes to the newest research and results and of course a warranty of 5 years. Our concept has been developed in cooperation with many researchers, surgeons, doctors and nurses. We place great emphasis on continued user dialogue as the concept is put to use within more and more specialties Vrøndingvej 7, Horsens Bådehavnsgade 6, 2. KBH SV 3
HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING Everyone deserves adequate daylight from the fact that receiving sufficient light supporting the natural circadian rhythm improves health, concentration, activity level and hormone production of human beings. Dynamic light circadian rhythms is based on scientific research studies in light and physiology. Both Danish and foreign results of clinical- and other research studies are used in the dynamic lighting program. The evidence shown in these research studies is evaluated in order to improve the bad conditions when living in an artificial indoor light. As humans we are to be active in daylight and rest in the dark, the light that we are active in consist of every colour in the colour spectrum, in the modern world it consist of 16.7 million colours. In dynamic light we use 16.7 million colours to formulate the right lighting program to the specific purpose with focus on avoiding colours, which are disturbing our physiology. The light is automatically adjusted in a warm and soft light emission within daytime creating a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. At night, the light adjusts and creates optimum lighting emission necessary for the human body to relax and fall asleep. The light therefore requires no control or interference as it automatically adjusts to the daily rhythm. The light can also be turned on and off, e.g. if the patient whish to read and turn on more light, the dynamic function automatically increase the light in the rest of the apartment to ensure that the patient is not met with too high contrasts affecting the eye comfort. 4
IMPROVING HEALTH FACTORS Receiving proper light at a daily basis can affect our health in a positive way including, activity level, visual difficulties, pedagogical functions and risk of depression. Studies show that dynamic lighting solutions strengthen the immune defence mechanism and rehabilitation. Visual difficulties Emotional excitement is often affected by lower transmission of blue light because of an aging eye function. Several patients need special attention in terms of visual impairment as e.g. cataract. The dynamic lighting solution can be adjusted and hereby accommodate patients individual visual impairment and continuously evaluated as progress is made. Therapy Light can be used as a tool to prevent depressions and tiredness. Using light as treatment for these illnesses have the best documented effect, it is therefore a natural part of the dynamic lighting solution. Pedagogical functions Melatonin Our sleep is depended on the presence of melatonin in our body. The level of melatonin in our body affects the quality of our sleep; it stimulates our immune defence mechanism and reduces stress and fear. Controlling the level of melatonin in our body medicinal or through light exposure can affect sleeping problems positively. The lighting design can be evaluated through the patients level of dementia or other confusing illnesses and help improving the orientation. It can help decrease confusion and establish a secure and comfortable environment for individual patients. Movement sensors control the light as patients move between rooms, which strengthen their orientation at night leaving the rest of the apartment with no light. 5
THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM The circadian rhythm programmed in the lighting system illustrates the sunrise, twilight and night-light. The rhythm is based on individual needs of patients but could also take action from the availability of personnel in order to service patients most efficiently. Test installations in the health care sector show that simulating the circadian rhythm creates more comfortable environments for patients and less stressful working conditions for personnel. The simulation of the circadian rhythm is based on the biological rhythm of the human body as illustrated in figure
DAY, EVENING, NIGHT Day The day-light is simulated with help from a full spectrum fixed light, day-light can either be adjusted to patients needs or follow the circadian rhythm. E.g. the light can work as an alarm clock from an artificial and comfortable sunrise for patients troubling with depression or tiredness, boosting their hormone production and energy. Night For patients who often wake up at night the lighting solution supports their orientation with movement sensors turning on an orientation light without evoking the human body. The light at night is subdued and colour adjusted to create a gentle light for patients to fall a sleep again and continue the hormone production. Evening Light the sunset, the evening light needs to be warm, soft and comfortable with a light that automatically and invisibly increase the lumen output with no disturbance. The evening light is adding optimum conditions for the human body to rest and prepare for a good night sleep. If the patient is having trouble sleeping the lighting solution can help the body time its hormone production and hereby affect the night sleep of patients positively. 7
REFERENCES We already have big reference with full-dynamic-led lighting at psychiatric hospitals, at ICU (intensive care units), at operating theater and at nursing homes and homes for the elderly. Albertslund In cooperation with the council of Albertslund, local citizens, engineers and DTU Fotonik (Department of Photonics Engineering, LUMINEX A/S has developed the future lighting design including the newest and most energy efficient technologies. The main purpose of this project was to develop an intelligent apartment for elders with focus on decreased CO2 emission combined with the newest LED technologi to create the best environment for the elderly. 8
