Dear Applicant: Thank you for your interest in applying for a Student Council position within Utah Valley University s Student Association. As the Executive Council of UVUSA, it is our job to set the example for student leadership while connecting and mobilizing Student Council to be the voice of the students at UVU. We know that every member plays a vital role in creating a productive and accomplished year. Our mission this year is simple: We seek to inspire passionate involvement and excellence by connecting and educating students on resources and opportunities available at UVU. We need students who have a genuine love for UVU and a desire to promote student involvement across all of campus. Read all application materials thoroughly. Different positions have different application requirements. Make sure you have all the required paperwork for the position(s) you apply for. If you are applying for more than one position you need to submit a letter of intent for each position in which you are applying. 1. Application packets are due Friday, March 25, 2016 by Noon to the secretary in SL122. Late packets will NOT be accepted. a. Complete Application Agreement & Reference Sheet Fill in all blanks and provide references. Be sure to sign and date your application. Detach agreement and include in application. b. Answer Application Questions (1-2 pages) Clearly indicate which question you are answering. c. Submit a resume with your application (1 page) Include campus involvement and leadership experience. d. Write a letter of intent (1-2 pages) Read the description of the position for which you are applying. Tell us why you are qualified for the position. Tell us three or more new ideas you have for the position. Conclude with a statement of your commitment. e. Create a collage representing you. Please use an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Please include a picture(s) of yourself, things that represent you, or that are important to you. OR create a 90 second video that represents your personality, talents, life, etc. Please uploaded to YouTube before or on March 25, 2016 at Noon and include the link in your packet. f. After applications are received they will be reviewed by the Selection Committee (newly elected Executive Council, two advisors, and a student at large) and narrowed down for interviews. 2016-2017 Student Council Application Agreement & Reference Sheet 1. Any applicant for Student Council must possess a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA at time of application. 2. All student government members must maintain a 2.5 semester GPA while serving in Student Council. Each semester they serve they must successfully complete at least 12 UVU credit hours (LDS Institute courses DO NOT count towards the 12 UVU credit hour requirement). 3. Student Council members must be able to attend one leadership class and Student Council meetings from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Nonleadership classes are NOT to be scheduled during office hours. Office hours are dedicated time where Student Council members are able to meet with campus representatives, work on campus initiatives, projects, and fulfill their role and responsibilities. a. Student Council leadership courses include CLSS 1030 (fall semester), CLSS 1040 (spring semester), and CLSS 240r. If these courses have been completed there are additional courses approved for registration in conjunction with the student leadership experience. Please check with your UVUSA advisor. 4. Student Council members must be able to attend all committee meetings and required UVUSA sponsored events. 5. Student Council members must be willing and able to complete a minimum of 10 hours per week, in addition to meetings, to fulfill their student council responsibilities. Because of this time commitment Student Council members are not permitted to participate in additional extracurricular activities (part time job, hobbies, other leadership opportunities, etc) that exceed 20-25 hours per week. 6. If selected as a student council member it will be critical for you to plan for and attend the dates listed below. Above are start times for each parade. Please note that an earlier meeting time and location will be communicated to you for each event. ***Jumpstart Orientation Dates: May 4, 6, 26 at 4:30pm June 1, 3, 7, 9, 14, 16, 20, 22, 24, 28, 30 at 9am July 6, 8,12, 14, 18, 20, 22, 27, 29 at 9am August 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, 15, 18 at 9am and 26, 31 at 4:30pm Student Council members host a booth at every new student orientation. It provides an opportunity for freshmen to be informed about what student council does and how to get involved. Set up MUST be completed 30 minutes prior to start time so please plan accordingly. Hosting the booth shouldn t exceed more than 1.5 hours (including set up and take down) at each orientation.
Available Positions Student Government is divided into four different branches: the Independent Branch, the Academic Senate, the Student Life and Activities Branch, and the Inter Club Council. The positions in each branch are defined in the following pages. A separate letter of intent is required for EACH position for which you want your application to be considered. The positions listed fill a council that votes on campus legislation passed through student government; they will also sit on various committees across campus and are responsible for allocating all student fees. **Bolded and underlined text indicates available positions.** Positions available within the Independent Branch: Serves under the Executive Vice-President Supports all other Student Council programs and represents their individual constituencies There are additional attendance requirements with these positions (excluding the Chief Justice and Marketing Chair) Public Relations Chair: Works with all branches of Student Council in effort to brand UVUSA and facilitate marketing campaigns for specific events and projects. Facilitates the use of UVUSA social media, coordinates information with satellite campuses, and acts as the historian for UVUSA through video, blogs, and photos. Recruits and retains a marketing committee to assist in the execution of design work, social media, marketing strategies, etc. Chief Justice: Works with all branches of Student Council in creating a judicial council to define and interpret UVUSA constitutional issues. Serves as Parliamentarian in Student Council meetings o Provides regular legislative updates o Coordinate and lobby efforts on a state and national level as directed by the Executive Branch of UVUSA. Promotes civic engagement on campus in any way that is necessary or deemed fit. Directs voter-registration campaigns for student body.
The following positions are apart of the Independent Branch but require a separate application process and are appointed through their respective co-sponsoring departments. Please contact the department listed for the application and additional information. Service Council President: Works under the Volunteer Service Learning Center office to coordinate and oversee service activities and projects programs for UVU students Coordinate and oversees student participation in community service, service expeditions, and service-learning by supporting and coordinating service between clubs, UVUSA, the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center, and community agencies. In charge of selecting and overseeing the student Service Council. Please contact the Volunteer and Service Learning Center for necessary information. International Student Council Liaison: An international student, who works within the International Office and is selected through the International Center. She/He is to act as the liaison between the International students and UVUSA. Serves as a voice for international student body by communicating activities, events, concerns and all other matters to and from UVUSA/International Council meetings. Actively pursue the voice and opinions of the Multicultural student body for more effective and accurate representation Please contact the International Student Services Office for necessary information. Multicultural Student Council Liason: A representative of the Multicultural Student Council and Multicultural Student Body Serves as a voice for Multicultural student body by communicating activities, events, concerns and all other matters to and from UVUSA/Multicultural Council meetings. Helps to inform Multicultural student body of academic opportunities and concerns. Actively pursue the voice and opinions of the Multicultural student body for more effective and accurate representation. Please contact the Multicultural Student Services Office for necessary information. UV Mentor Liaison: A Team Lead in the UV Mentor Program to act as a liaison to UVUSA & UV Mentors. A voice on UVUSA Council to communicate activities, concerns, and initiatives to and from the UV Mentor Program and UVUSA. Please contact the UV Mentor program for necessary information.
Positions available within the Academic Senate: The UVUSA Student Senate works directly with the Deans of each School to represent the student body on department steering committees and also to help with any special projects or needs within each School. The School Senator is the ongoing representative for the students voice within their School during student council processes and especially during the student fee hearings. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serves under the Academic Vice President Meets with dean and/or associate dean at least twice per month Actively pursues student feedback on campus programming, policy, specific college/school matters, and all other aspects of student life on campus Coordinates and organizes monthly student outreach within respective school Organizes campus-wide speakers and forums Acts as the voice of the students in their respective schools Recruits, oversees, trains, and retains department representatives for each department within each school Meets with department representatives at least twice per month to stay connected with each department Oversees campus suggestions/question boxes and online suggestion blogs Attends chair and department meetings to discuss and advocate for student concerns Serves on various committees on campus Aids in the development of two year programs, four year programs, and masters programs Supports all other Student Government Activities Senate Positions: Woodbury School of Business Senator College of Technology & Computing Senator School of the Arts Senator College of Humanities & Social Sciences Senator College of Science & Health Senator School of Education Senator University College Senator College of Aviation and Public Services
Positions available within Student Activities: Serves under the Student Activities Vice President Recruits and retains a committee Develops event promotion and publicity skills Creates ideas and applies them to create diverse, exciting aspects of activities and publicity with a professional touch Gains feedback from the student body and utilizes it in event planning Will attend summer training meetings Supports all other Student Council activities **NOTE: Must have yourself or committee members available to publicize events during peak student traffic hours in the hallways (Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday 10 AM - 2 PM) Activities Chair: Plans, actively publicizes and coordinates dances, concerts and other campus entertainment and programs in consultation with the VP of Student Activities. e.g. Halloween Dance, Welcome Back Dance, Mardi Gras, etc. Fine Arts Chair: Plans, actively publicizes and coordinates events specifically geared toward the fine arts in consultation with the VP of Student Activities. Work closely with the Arts Senator and the School of the Arts to coordinate events with departments on campus e.g. UVU's Best Dance Crew, Talent Show, Battle of the Bands, UV Idol, theater productions, Fine Arts Showcase, etc. Special Events Chair: Plans, actively publicizes and coordinates special campus activities involving the community and first year experience activities in consultation with the VP of Student Activities e.g. Kid s nights, Date Nights, and Freshman Activities Traditions Chair: Plans, actively publicizes and coordinates traditional campus social events in consultation with the VP of Student Activities, e.g. Emerald Ball, Mr. UVU, Movie Nights, Homecoming Events, etc. This position must be available for the campus-wide Homecoming meeting (last Tuesday of the month at 8am). Spirit Chair: Plans, actively publicizes and coordinates activities that promote school spirit in consultation with the VP of Student Activities. Acts as President of the MAWL (Mighty Athletic Wolverine League) while coordinating with the Athletics Department, Cheer and Dance and other organizations on campus in event planning for NCAA/WAC athletic events. Responsible for new ways of marketing, planning, and execution to increase student attendance at games, while utilizing UVU entering into the WAC. Events will include but are not limited to: homecoming week, game promotion, and tailgate parties. This position must be available for regular coordinating meetings with Athletics, the Wolverine Taskforce, and Wolverine Pride committees.
Positions available within the Inter-Club Council: Serves under the Vice President of UV Clubs Represents all campus clubs and organizations Provides opportunities for recruiting club members and promoting clubs Help clubs prepare for and allocates club-funding Supports all other Student Council programs UV Club Ambassador (4 positions): A Club Ambassador acts as an ambassador for clubs to student council and the rest of campus by: Advising, training, and assisting clubs with campus policies and procedures Assisting clubs in publicizing events Helping coordinate Club Rush Providing ideas for service projects and fund-raising opportunities for clubs. Club Ambassadors should be prepared to spend time in the clubs office as well as attend their respective club events. They should make visits to their clubs meetings to assist and support clubs as needed. They should also be prepared to facilitate multiple trainings to club presidencies. Each UV Club Ambassador is part of the Inter-Club Council Funding Board and helps allocate club funding. Club Ambassadors are also responsible for the training and preparation of clubs. Each of the four UV Club Ambassadors will be assigned by the UV Clubs Vice-President to work with the clubs of at least two of the following club categories: Academic, Athletic/Recreational, Community Service, Cultural/Ethnic, Performing Arts/Media Arts, Political/Social Awareness, Pre-Professional, Religious, and Social. *Applicants for UV Club Ambassador must also provide a letter of recommendation from someone who has overseen or worked with them within a club environment.
