This course aims to provide the necessary skills in this respect through a critical analysis of the transformations in global capitalism since the outset of the new globalization started at the end of the last millennium. The events which shaped the 1990s profoundly changed the hierarchies of the world s economy, and revolutionized in a previously unthinkable way the established geopolitical equilibrium. Through a combination of microbusiness history perspectives and macroeconomic scenarios, this course s aims will provide an informative overview of the changes which took place, discussing the new emerging models in the global economy against the old, established incumbents and providing relevant skills in order to orient future decision makers choices in a world of uncertainty.

It increasingly benefits from virtual environments and takes place through communities and platforms driven by crowds of developers and problem solvers. In some of the most dynamic sectors of the modern economy, such as apps for smartphones, video games, media content and scientific and technical problem solving, the overall performance of companies already relies on individuals located outside the organization to become crucial sources of modules, ideas, tasks and procedures. In their attempts to access and leverage these sources of innovation, it is now quite common for companies to employ more open forms of innovation, and to orchestrate innovative communities. While these open approaches have rapidly diffused, creating a wealth of opportunities, it is obviously crucial to understand how companies manage to access and leverage these distributed sources of innovation. From this view point, the course develops the conceptual foundations, frameworks and methods of innovation processes and then focuses on the relationships between communities and firms. The focus is on how to empower innovation, how to exploit digital environments to that purpose, how to access and leverage innovation communities, how to manage and strategize in this context, and how to foster communities as well as create related fitting business models.
