PRESS RELEASE. NORDICON. DECEMBER 2000 New in The United States of America Nordicon means Business and Business Glass from Nordicon means Comfort Fenestration with a Green Vision Developed in Denmark with energy saving, comfort and simplicity of operation in mind, the Nordicon Unit is now being introduced to the North American fenestration industry. High energy prices and the Nordic climate, dark cold winters and summers with minimal sunlight had provided the inspiration for this development when the first Nordicon Units were installed in Danish houses 10 years ago. The modern Vikings' reluctance to expose themselves to uncomfortable cold draughts, heat radiation, glare and reflections on data screens also contributed to this fenestration design. The Nordicon Blind unit is genuine Insulating Glass with a built-in Venetian Blind. The blind slats can be tilted and hoisted by means of a hermetically sealed shaft for manual or electric operation. The choice of glass and gas-fill in the 0.95 inch wide space and the slat colour determine the energy properties. See table. Energy Performance Example * Values adjustable for energy efficiency and personal comfort ** Energy and Light Data U Factor Btu/sq-ft.F.h Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Visible Light Transmission Insulating Glass data Total Window data D.O.E. Recomm. 0.25 / 0.19*** 0.27 / 0.20*** "insulating glass" Energy Star min / max N : max 0.35 S : max 0.75 0.65 / 0.08** 0.52 / 0.06** max 0.40 C : max 0.55 S : max 0.40 0.75 / 0.05** 0.60 / 0.04** min. 0.50 ----- Outer clear glass / Inner LowE coated clear glass / Argon filled 0.95 inch space / white blind slats. ** Minutely variable by hoisting and tilting the blind slats. *** Blind down and closed.

The Nordicon Unit exceeds all standards recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy for energy-efficient fenestration and it exceeds the Energy Star rating by a wide margin. (Certification not applied for). The use of Nordicon Units in new buildings and for upgrading existing fenestration will set new energy-saving standards and will provide greatly improved economic and environmental benefits for the Nation and for the personal comfort of the user. U.S. Patented Nordicon Units are now available, and the first U. S. projects have been installed at a school and a hospital in NY. NORDICON and BUSINESS GLASS are U.S. Registered Trade Marks. All Patent Rights reserved. U.S. Patent Re. 35,926, European Patent 0 519 972 B1. See www.nordicon.com for more information and contacts.

Why have buildings with Nordicon Units? Who benefits? You do! if you are a user, owner, builder, architect, engineer, window manufacturer, or in the insulating glass business or if you are concerned about energy and the environment

User benefits The people in the room can individually control privacy - by hoisting and tilting the blind - and still have clear view, as tinted glass is no longer required the light and solar heat - so that the work area just inside the window is just as attractive as the rest of the room the light on data screens - can now adjusted as required by the (EU) Data Screen Workplace Regulation and get the clean feeling - from dust-free blinds and an improved room climate - as less heating or cooling is required

Benefits for building owners Saving Other blinds or more expensive - tinted glass Measuring, ordering and installing blinds Curtains - and cleaning Cleaning of blinds Cooling installation capacity Cooling energy (solar heat reduced to 10 % ) Energy for light (light shelf effect from the blind) Gaining Attractive design of the building and the rooms. Visual simplicity and clean environment. Usable room space just inside the glass - no glare and heat on body and face. User controlled privacy, clean feeling, better room climate, control of glare on data screens. Maximum light in dark months - as no tinted (and more expensive) glass is needed. Very short Pay-Back-Time See calculation sheet

Benefits for builders and contractors Architecturally attractive solution with impressive energy-saving potential Low maintenance costs Single supplier for windows and blinds - no complicated co-ordination Great possibilities for renovation of windows - easy to plan section by section

Benefits for the architect The Nordicon Blind Unit offers the architect a new freedom in designing buildings with intelligent control of the solar effect on light and heat. The blind itself is unobtrusive and does not clash with other architectural elements. Manual or automated operation of the built-in blinds control any light, glare and heat radiation effects. Achieves at least the same effect as any installed inside or outside blind or light shelf system. Inspired renovation projects can also be solved - solar-energy-wise - by using Nordicon Units. In addition, the heat insulation of the Nordicon Unit is as efficient as any other insulating glass with 24 mm ( 0.95 inch ) cavity.

Benefits for the building engineer The Nordicon Blind Unit is simply a genuine sealed glass unit with traditional properties for insulation. The only difference is the built-in adjustable blind when lowered and in use. Maximises the benefit from daylight, since there is no need for tinted glass to reduce heat. Wind and other problems for external blinds are no longer a worry, as the blind is well protected inside the insulating glass. Calculation of the heating capacity and fuel consumption can simply be based on standard data. U-factor down to 0.17 BTU/-. Calculation of the (reduced) cooling capacity and the energy required for cooling is also quite simple using the Nordicon data for Solar Heat Gain. SHGC down to 0.06.

Benefits for the window manufacturer Customer service will be greatly improved by adding windows with Nordicon Blind Units to the product range. Increased order potential no extra investment in sales or production capacity required. Installation is simple, and Nordicon's representative is available with technical support, if needed for adapting the unit to the frame design. Nordicon and the national representative and license manufacturer will provide support in the form of technical information, sales training and documentation. Ordering a Blind Unit is just as simple as ordering a normal insulating glass unit

Benefits for the environment - and for all 6.000.000.000 earthlings reduction of the use of global resources especially fossil fuel for heating and cooling reduced carbon dioxide pollution reduced global warming and ice berg melt down better life quality for all see also www.rifpd.org www.nordicon.com

What Architects and Users say about Nordicon Blind Units no more dirty and damaged blinds always getting in the way of handles, plants and curtains doors and windows can be opened and closed with no obstruction from the blinds perfect solar shading and privacy can be installed in any type of window the same thickness as old-fashioned triple glazing "visual simplicity elegant and exclusive" save on blind installation costs no measurements needed for ordering elsewhere "clean and stylish" all the advantages of a sealed unit plus something extra can be combined with any type of special glass ideal for food shops will keep the sun off the cakes, and can be closed at night provides a comfortable room climate and working environment, as each blind can be easily adjusted according to individual requirements "all-in-one unit, easy to install - also suitable for partition walls" improves the insulation property of the sealed unit and reduces the fuel bill tested by DTI and manufactured according to DS 1094 with certification these 920 units were installed eight years ago still no problems still saving airconditioning energy huge savings on cleaning costs in public buildings and the blinds are protected against vandals and carelessness fulfil hygiene requirements for hospitals provide privacy but also allow views in intensive care wards operates with only one cord pull no tangled cords or lopsided blinds, and the cord is easy to locate, as it has a weight on the end - a neat and tidy overall appearance. ' use as a room divider simple and flexible construction element free-standing - simply install in a wooden frame an advantage when planning partition walls in offices it s simple to rethink the use of the rooms by closing one blind and opening another backs of file cabinets can be hidden and light can be allowed in from the lobby the personnel manager's office meetings can be held in complete privacy electrically-operated blinds can be controlled from a desk or from the building's climate control system partition between kitchen and restaurant and allows observation from the supervisor s office use in free-standing ticket booths and portable buildings no more blind cleaning the (sliding) doors to the garden can now have blinds that can remain in place when the doors are opened and closed they just go with the door

a front door with built-in blind unit means no problems with children, rain or dogs damaging your blind and at night the blind can be closed the plants in the conservatory are protected from the sun and the blinds are protected from the plant leaves a complete sliding wall can have blinds inside and the wind and the flies will leave the blinds in peace partition walls for kindergartens panes with toughed safety glass right down to the floor provide fine hygienic play areas easy to supervise and brightly-coloured blinds architectural unity for the façade with uniform blinds throughout the building replace external blinds, awnings or fixed overhangs the blinds don t conceal the window structure from within but accentuate an interesting window design the window and the blind extend all the way to the floor without obstructing furniture the window can be divided to allow individual blinds to be set up or down better light at the back of the room and less glare from the window and the blind does not have to be moved when opening the window the right alternative to external blinds closed blinds are an aid to crime prevention particularly if the blind units are made from toughened or bullet-proof glass. if you get tired of looking at the blinds, simply hoist them out of sight use as a discreet extra (inside) window in "listed" houses saves on awnings, which always flap and tear in stormy weather allows light adjustment of between 100 and 5 percent - unlike tinted glass, which also dims the light in dull weather the air conditioning system is no longer necessary, as the heat can now be reduced by up to 75%. www.nordicon.com Fully-closed blinds can provide more than 90% light reduction - ideal for OHP displays. Electrically operated blind units can also be controlled by B&O s AV systems. the individual light glare control capabilities of each unit optimise comfort in data screen work areas and fulfil the legislative requirements for adjustable solar shading. Adjusting the blinds will often give more even light distribution through reflection off the ceiling and an improved working environment, and the blinds can remain in place even when the window is open. the Venetian blind is in fact a "light shelf" protected against becoming dull with dirt
