SECTION 1 LADDER SAFETY Training Program Introduction This guide wi hep you deveop a training program that wi support a safe and productive workpace environment for your empoyees. It wi hep you to: Prepare and organize your training session. Assembe training materias. Present the PowerPoint side show. Conduct training exercises. Stimuate discussion that appies to the topic presented in the presentation and to your organization s work environment. Document the training and training feedback for continuous improvement. Training Objectives When the training is compete, empoyees wi be abe to: Recognize the importance of adder safety. Identify common causes of adder accidents. Seect and inspect adders correcty. Set up adders propery. Cimb and work on adders safey. Maintain, store, and transport adders propery. Rationae for Training Hundreds of workers are kied every year in fas from adders, and many thousands more suffer serious injuries. Sometimes those injuries are disabing, and the injured workers are out of work for a ong time. That s bad news for them and for their famiies. And it s bad for your workpace, too, because then you re short staffed. Sometimes, it s even worse. But there s good news, too. Amost a adder accidents are preventabe. That s because most of these accidents are the resut of an empoyee using the wrong adder for the job, using a adder incorrecty, or faiing to make sure that the adder was in safe condition before using it. A three of these mistakes can be corrected through proper safety training. Reguatory Overview OSHA s adder standards focus on adder design and construction, safety inspections, proper use of various kinds of adders, and adder maintenance requirements. OSHA s genera industry standards for portabe adders are found at 29 CFR 1910.25 (portabe wooden adders) and 29 CFR 1910.26 (portabe meta adders). 3 BLR Business & Lega Resources (1006)

OSHA aso has a genera industry standard for fixed adders (29 CFR 1910.27) and a standard for fixed industria stairs (29 CFR 1910.25), but fixed adders are not covered in this training session. OSHA s construction standard for adders is found at 29 CFR 1926.1053. Training Requirements Your adder safety training program shoud contain, at a minimum, the foowing eements: Importance of adder safety Common causes of adder accidents Ladder seection Ladder inspection Procedures for deaing with defective adders Ladder setup Cimbing and descending adders safey Working on adders Ladder maintenance Ladder storage Transporting adders Trainer quaifications. The person conducting the training must be knowedgeabe in the subject matter covered by the eements contained in the training program, and as it reates specificay to the workpace that the training wi address. Audience. A empoyees can benefit from basic adder safety training. Training frequency. Empoyees shoud receive basic adder safety training when they are hired and periodicay thereafter. Deivery method and format. Trainers may use hands-on demonstration, cassroom, and any other method of training that eads to comprehension and understanding of the topic. There shoud be an opportunity for interactive questions and answers with the person conducting the training session. Trainee evauation. Measures of training effectiveness can be performancebased (observed behavior), or evauated by written or ora test. Recordkeeping. Training records shoud be kept showing when the training was hed, what was covered, who gave the training and the trainer s quaifications, and who attended. 4 BLR Business & Lega Resources (1006)

Basic Principes of Adut Learning Most aduts are sef-directed earners; they want to earn what they want, when they want, and how they want. Adut earners have their own stye of earning that incudes four key eements: motivation, reinforcement, retention, and transference. See the Basic Principes of Adut Learning guide in this product for more information about the key eements of adut earning and other insights for training aduts. Research indicates that periodicay asking trainees questions about whether they are concentrating on earning the training materia wi increase their earning retention. At various points in the side show notes, this program wi ask trainees about where they are directing their menta resources and whether they are concentrating on earning the materia. SECTION 2 LADDER SAFETY Training Program Preparation This section wi hep you prepare for your presentation and ensure that you have a the materias you wi need. You may use different materias that cover the topic if you beieve they wi be more effective. Resources and Materias The foowing resources and materias shoud be avaiabe for every training session: A quiet room with basic accommodations for the comfort of trainees Sign-in sheet (incuded with this product) Printed copies of the training program (PowerPoint side show notes, side show handouts, exercises, and empoyee handouts) Copies of reevant reguations or company poicies (if appicabe) Computer and projector with the PowerPoint side show oaded Screen or bank wa for projecting the side show Copies of the evauation form (optiona) Copies of the quiz (optiona) Have the foowing materias avaiabe for the adder safety training session: Stepadder, straight adder, and extension adder See the Appendix: Training Program Support Materias section for a compete ist of support materias that come with this product. Prepare the PowerPoint Side Show Before presenting the PowerPoint side show, read the PowerPoint sides, side show notes, the handouts, the exercises, and the quiz. Prepare equipment and other support materias as suggested and appropriate for your workpace. Side show notes. The foowing side show notes describe recommended interactive activities and materias to have on hand as you present the side show. Each note is aso embedded with the side show notes for each side to assist you as you are presenting your training program. They are isted here in the sequence that they are presented in the side show: Describe adder accidents that have occurred in your workpace, and identify the causes of these accidents. Review your organization s adder safety poicies and work rues. Review your rues for reporting defective adders and removing them from service. At the transition side, answer any questions and conduct an exercise, if appropriate. Demonstrate proper adder setup for stepadders, straight adders, and extension adders. Lead a discussion about safety precautions for cimbing, descending, and working on adders. Review your adder maintenance and repair poicy and procedures. Review adder storage rues and procedures. At the transition side, answer any questions and conduct an exercise, if appropriate. Give trainees the quiz. Customize Sides, Side Show Notes, and Quiz The information contained in the PowerPoint side show covers genera guideines and reguatory requirements for the topic that is presented. You may want to modify the side show and quiz to meet site-specific objectives and poicies or oca reguatory requirements. If you have the PowerPoint software appication on your computer, you may add, modify, or deete sides and side show notes to meet your needs. See the How to Customize PowerPoint guide in this product for more information. Pease note, however, if you modify the Powerpoint presentation, you may aso need to modify the quiz to accommodate any changed or deeted information. Customize specific sides and side show notes. You may want to modify some sides and/or side show notes to incude information specific to your workpace. In the side show notes of seect sides in this presentation, we have recommended that you consider making such modifications. Make sure that any modification or deetion of information does not diminish your abiity to achieve your training goas or meet reguatory requirements. The sides cannot be changed in the PDF version (incuded with this product) of the PowerPoint side show. If you want to modify the side show notes to correspond to any changes in the PowerPoint side show, this can be done in the notes view of PowerPoint. Customize the quiz. The quiz can be easiy modified; simpy type in your changes using Microsoft Word or other standard word processing appication. In order to preserve the origina document, change the name of the fie before saving it. Prepare Materias and Schedue the Training Session Computer projection. If you have a computer video projection system, run a test to make sure the PowerPoint side show runs propery. Overhead projection. If you pan to use an overhead projector, print the PowerPoint side show sides out on transparencies. The sides wi be cearer if they are printed in coor. If you don t have a coor printer, your oca print or copy store can print out coor transparencies for you. 7 BLR Business & Lega Resources (1006)

Side show handouts. PowerPoint offers four options for printing side show handouts: six sides per page, four sides per page, three sides per page, and two sides per page (in the print diaogue). We recommend you print copies of the PowerPoint side show in three-sides-per-page format if you want trainees to take notes during the side show. See the How to Customize PowerPoint guide in this product for information about printing side show handouts. Empoyee handouts. Prepare and copy any handouts, such as the empoyee handouts provided with this product, or any site-specific handouts you may have. Exercises. Determine which exercises you pan to conduct, and prepare any materias or equipment you need. Scheduing. Schedue the cass for a date and time convenient to most trainees. SECTION 3 LADDER SAFETY Training Program Presentation This section provides tips and suggestions for presenting training materias to trainees. Present to Trainees The time it wi take to present the PowerPoint side show and conduct the exercises wi vary depending on the size of your faciity, the compexity of issues in your workpace, the eve of knowedge and comprehension of the topic by trainees, and the amount of site-specific information. In genera, assume each side wi take 2 to 3 minutes to cover. If you practice your presentation, keep in mind that presentations typicay take onger during the actua training. You can use your own words rather than read from the side show notes. Note: To make your training job easier, we have incuded a subte signa to indicate the ast buet on each side. After the fina buet on each side, a sma gray box wi appear on the bottom right. This is your sign that no further buets wi appear on that side. Training tip: Consider varying the format within your training program two or three times during each hour of training. For exampe, switch from the PowerPoint side show to an exercise after 20 minutes of sides, then return to the PowerPoint. Most peope earn via more than one format (e.g., seeing images, reading text, hearing, and activity); a mutimoda presentation keeps trainees interested and energized. Trainee Participation Invove trainees as much as possibe by asking them questions and getting them to tak about their own jobs. Encourage them to make suggestions they may have on how to improve conditions in the workpace reated to the topic. Ask trainees to tak about experiences in their workpace reated to the topic. Use rea-ife exampes as often as possibe to reinforce earning. Handout(s) Give each trainee a copy of the handout(s) before the side show or after the quiz. Exercises Mutipe exercises for this topic are incuded with this product for your use during or after the PowerPoint side show. The exercises may aso be used independenty of the side show. Questions and Answers Answer any questions the best that you can. Even if you don t have the technica knowedge to answer a ot of questions on the topic, you can sti answer the important questions about the way that your workpace is addressing the topic-reated issues. Foow up with responses to empoyee questions either personay, through the empoyee s supervisor, or the faciity s intranet, if appicabe. Foow-Up Document that the training took pace and who attended. Aso, provide the trainees with documentation that they have competed training (such as a certificate of competion), and be sure to notify any trainees who faied to satisfactoriy compete the training. Compete these foow-up tasks: Distribute the Certificate to successfu trainees as proof of competion of training (optiona). Distribute the Evauation Form to empoyees and coect the competed forms (optiona). Pace copies of the Quiz resuts in each trainee s personne fie. Fie one copy of the Attendee Sign-In Sheet with the workpace records, and fie one copy in the trainer s fies. Fi in the appropriate information on the Training Record for each empoyee.
