Configuration Rules and Examples for FAS20xx Systems This flyer (previously named Supported Configurations for FAS20xx Series Systems) describes example connections for the onboard Fibre Channel (FC) ports (0a and 0b) for FAS20xx systems and the onboard port (0d) on the FAS2040 system. For FAS2050 systems, this flyer also describes supported connections for the expansion PCI card, which adds additional FC ports (1a through 1d, depending on the adapter), ports, or an SCSI port. FAS20xx options Storage protocol Controller redundancy Depending on the storage protocols, the FC or ports attach to disk shelves or backup devices, and/or the FC ports can attach to a SAN using the FC Protocol, in addition to disk shelf and backup device connections. See the iscsi and Fibre Channel Configuration Guide on http://now.netapp.com for more information. Active/active. The system has two redundant controller modules. Stand-alone. The system has one controller module. Internal/external storage Note Systems can have both internal and external storage. Internal disks. Internal disks in the system chassis are used. External disks. The system connects to one or more disk shelf loops of one or more DS14mk2, DS14mk4, or DS4243 disk shelves. Disk shelf connection redundancy Multipath. The controller has multiple connections to disks on the disk shelves. The ports of the last disk shelf in the disk shelf loop are connected back to a FC port on each controller. Multipath is the preferred. Dual-path. The controller has two connections to disks on the disk shelves. Single-path. The disk shelves have a single connection to the controller. This is not preferred. Backup devices External backup devices. The system connects to a tape backup device. For supported s for the... Go to... Connectivity Rules Use the following connectivity rules when cabling a FAS20xx system. Fibre Channel Connectivity Rules A Fibre Channel port can be connected to storage shelves or tape drives when configured as an initiator or to SAN hosts or FC switches when configured as a target. See the Data ONTAP documentation for the fcadmin command and the Fibre Channel and iscsi Configuration Guide for more information. Because of limited port density, the FAS20xx systems support single-path Fibre Channel s, but the best practice is to use dual-path or Multipath s. Connectivity Rules The FAS2040 onboard port and FAS2050 expansion ports can only be connected to storage. Refer to the DS4243 Installation and Service Guide on http://now.netapp.com/ for additional information on and ACP connectivity. Because of limited port density, the FAS2040 systems support single-path s. On FAS2050 systems, dual-path s are preferred. The FAS2040 and FAS2050 systems support Fibre Channel storage or tape drives along with storage. For example, the Fibre Channel storage on FAS2040-3 on page 16 and the storage FAS2040-7 on page 19 can be combined together. 2 Connectivity Rules
