Revised July 2014 PLATTEVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT PLATTEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY CODE

Platteville High School Student Activity Code The Platteville School District s primary mission is an educational one. Although extra and cocurricular activities expand upon the educational experience they are not an entitlement. Participation in extra and co-curricular activities is a privilege that requires good academic standing and appropriate personal conduct. The PHS Activity Code identifies academic and attendance eligibility standards and provides a sequence of progressive discipline for personal conduct code violations. Mission Extra and co-curricular activities at Platteville High School develop lifetime skills which foster emotional, social, intellectual and physical growth. Students who choose to participate assume additional responsibilities as representatives of their school, their families and their community. Purpose The purpose of the Activity Code is to establish a uniform code of conduct for Platteville High School students involved in high school extra and co-curricular activities. Any extra and cocurricular activity recognized by the School District of Platteville will be considered an activity under this code. To the Student The activities program can be an important part of your high school years. Extra and cocurricular activities provide new opportunities, new experiences and help you develop your interests and skills. Students who participate in the school s extra and co-curricular programs are expected to conduct themselves at all times and in all places, in a positive manner that will bring credit to themselves, their school and their community. This code is in effect 24 hours a day and 12 months a year. When you and your parent/guardian sign this code you agree to abide by the regulations and consequences outlined. Scholastic Eligibility Requirements Academic Standards The primary mission of PHS it to provide all students with successful academic experiences. Students that participate in PHS extra or co-curricular activities must achieve and maintain academic success in order to participate. Students must maintain full-time student status and passing grades without any incompletes to be considered eligible to participate in extra or cocurricular activities. Scholastic ineligibility may not be appealed. In order to maintain academic eligibility a student must not receive any failing marks at the end of a quarter. An incomplete will be considered a failing mark. A student that receives one failing mark will be suspended from all activities for 15 school days. Students will be allowed to practice/rehearse but not allowed to compete/perform. Grades will be checked after 15 days and if the student has all passing grades he/she regains eligibility. If the student is still failing a class he/she will remain ineligible for an additional 15 school days. This process will repeat until the student has regained eligibility. o Probationary Status: if a student that has one failing mark chooses to attend Study Table or develop a Student Improvement Plan he/she will be granted probationary eligibility. This will allow the student to compete/perform during the 15 day suspension period. Grades will be checked after 15 days and if the student has all passing grades he/she regains eligibility. If the student is still failing a class he/she will be suspended from all activities for 15 school days and continue with the selected intervention. The student may continue to practice/rehearse but will not be allowed to compete/perform. This process will repeat until the student has regained eligibility. A student that receives more than one failing mark and/or has a cumulative grade point of less than 2.0 will be suspended from all activities until the next marking period. o Probationary Status: if a student has more than one failing mark and/or a cumulative grade point of less than 2.0 chooses to attend Study Table or develop a Student Improvement Plan he/she will be granted probationary eligibility. This will allow the student to serve a 15 school day suspension during which time they will be allowed to practice/rehearse. Grades will be checked after 15 days and if the student has passing grades in all subjects he/she will regain conditional eligibility. The student will be allowed to practice/rehearse and compete/perform with conditional eligibility. Under conditional eligibility the student s grades will be checked bi-weekly and eligibility will be revoked if he/she is receiving a failing grade when the grades are checked. This process will repeat until the student has regained eligibility. Study Table o An intervention that is available to all students o Is available Monday through Friday from 7:15 8:00 am 3

o Participants of PHS activities that have elected this option to receive probationary eligibility will attend a minimum of 3 times per week during the suspension period Student Improvement Plan (SIP) o An intervention that is available to participants of PHS activities that are seeking probationary eligibility o This is a plan designed by the student, coach/advisor, teacher(s), guidance counselor and endorsed by the parent(s) to improve academic achievement Fourth Quarter Failures o A student who receives a failing mark at the end of the 4 th marking period may enroll in an equivalent summer class ans substitute the grade for the failing mark. A student can only substitute one grade per summer session. Attendance Standards Regular school attendance is an important factor in academic achievement. Participants of PHS activities are expected to be in attendance the day before, the day of and the day after a contest or performance. An unexcused absence for any part of a school day (i. e. tardy, skipping a class, study hall or an entire day) will result in that student being ineligible for the next extra or cocurricular contest or performance. For any absence to be considered an excused absence the attendance officer must receive a phone call followed by a written notification from the student s parent. A student must be in attendance for 4 (four) school periods to be considered eligible to participate in a practice, contest or performance on the same day (Hillmen Pride is not considered a school period). Personal Conduct Requirements Character counts at PHS and lack of character as demonstrated by inappropriate personal conduct is considered a violation of the Activity Code. A student s conduct is bound by this Code at all times during the calendar year. If a student is not involved in an activity at the time of the violation, enforcement begins at the start of the student s next activity. Personal conduct violations and corresponding consequences are outlined below. Violations of the Code can accumulate through the student s high school career however, after one calendar year during which there are no other violations, one violation will be removed from a student s personal conduct history. Violations of the code include: Violations of the PHS Student Conduct and Discipline Plan that results in a suspension from school Academic dishonesty Assault, battery, bullying or hazing that causes mental/bodily harm or creates a credible threat of mental/bodily harm Pending the results of an investigation as required by Board policy, participation in any form of harassment 4

Use of performance enhancing substance(s) when not prescribed for a medical issue Verbal or physical aggression towards an official Being present without your parent/guardian at a place/event where alcohol, tobacco and/or drugs are being used illegally Possession or consumption of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs when reported by law enforcement or other credible observers (Exception the ceremonial/religious use of alcohol.) If a student violates this regulation a second time the student must undergo a formal drug/alcohol assessment conducted by an approved agency. **Hosting a gathering where alcohol, tobacco and/or drugs are available and are being used illegally 1 st Violation Immediate suspension from all competitions/performances for 1/3 of the regularly scheduled contest/events. Loss of honors of the school for one calendar year. The student must attend all scheduled practices. If a code violation occurs outside of a student s activity season, then the suspension will be served during the next activity since he/she will not be able to join an activity season already in progress. To fulfill a suspension, a student must be involved in the activity from beginning of the season through its conclusion. 2 nd Violation Immediate suspension from all competitions/performances for 2/3 of the regularly scheduled contest/events. Loss of honors of the school for one calendar year. The student must attend all scheduled practices. 3 rd Violation Immediate suspension from all activities for one calendar year. Loss of honors of the school for one calendar year. After one calendar year the student must apply to the principal for re-instatement. ** This violation will be treated as a student s 2 nd Violation Honors of the School include officers of clubs or organizations, post-season award winners (for example, but not limited to, MVP, Captain, most improved), Prom and Homecoming court members, graduation speakers, MCs for Homecoming and Prom, and class officers. Self-Referral A student will be allowed one self-referral during their high school career. The referral must be made to an administrator or guidance counselor within 48 hours from the time of the violation or the end of the next school day (whichever comes first). When a student self-refers the penalty for the violation will be reduced by 50%. A student cannot self-refer when a citation/ticket has already been issued by a law enforcement agency. Non-athletic Activities Although the Activity Code as written can apply to many of the activities sponsored by PHS, the committee recognizes that the Code will not be equitable in some situations involving students participating in non-athletic activities. Therefore, when a violation occurs involving a student that is participating in a non-athletic activity the principal, activities director and the advisor/sponsor of the activity will have the authority to amend the consequences of the Code in such a way that is practical. 5
