Butterfly or Moth? Today you will learn about a Painted Lady Butterfly and a Robin (Cecropia) Moth.

What is a Moth? A moth is an insect. it has a head six legs a body with two parts big eyes antennae a tongue called proboscis Moths have thick, furry bodies. Most moths fly at night.

What is a Moth? They live in gardens, forests and grasslands. Most moths have thick, feathery antennae without knobs. When moths are resting, they fold their wings out like an open book. An adult moth does not eat.

Life Cycle of a Moth A female moth lays some eggs. A caterpillar crawls out of an egg.

Life cycle of the Moth... The larva eats and eats.

Life cycle of the Moth... The larva molts several times. The caterpillar spins a cocoon.

Life Cycle of a Moth... A new moth emerges from the cocoon. Soon it flies away. It does not eat as an adult.

Cecropia (Robin Moth) The Cecropia belongs to the silk moth family. Their bodies are 5 inches long.

Cecropia (Robin Moth) They are the largest moth in North America. The Robin Moth has a wing span of 5 to 6 inches.

Cecropia (Robin Moth) They have many enemies. They do not eat as adults because they do not have a tongue. The Cecropia caterpillar is green with red, yellow and blue bumps.

Cecropia ( Robin Moth) A female Robin Moth can lay more than 100 eggs. It takes 10-12 days for the eggs to hatch.

Cecropia (Robin Moth) Caterpillars skin does not grow. When the skin gets too tight, it sheds its skin. This is called molting.

A butterfly is an insect. Butterflies have six legs, a head, and a two part body. They have long thin bodies.

They have two wings, big eyes, and a tongue called a proboscis. They have long, thin antennae with little knobs on the ends. They are used for smelling.

Most butterflies fly during the day. When they are resting, most butterflies fold their wings up over their backs.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly A female butterfly lays some eggs. A tiny caterpillar, or larva crawls out of an egg. The larva eats and eats. It sheds its skin and grows.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly The caterpillar becomes a pupa covered by a hard shell called a chrysalis. A new butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.

The Painted Lady Butterfly is one of the most common butterflies in the world. The Painted Lady looks a lot like a Monarch. It is dark orange and black. They are strong fliers. They can travel up to 620 miles.

The Painted Lady caterpillar eats right after it hatches. They eat Mallow plants. They also like to lay their eggs on this plant.

Painted Lady Butterflies are found all over the world except Antarctica and South America.

Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Think about how hungry he was and what he ate each day. Go to the next page and follow directions.

You are going to make your own Hungry Caterpillar book. Get a copy of these two pages from your teacher. Have FUN!!!!! Activities

Select one of these topics to write about. Pretend you are a moth or a butterfly. Write a letter to your mom telling her how your life has changed since you were an egg. Pretend you are the very hungry caterpillar. Tell what your favorite food is and why you like it. Also tell why this food would help you grow. Go to the library and find a book about butterflies and moths. Read the about a different butterfly or moth. Be ready to share with your class at least 3 interesting facts about your moth or butterfly. Activities

You are going to make a colorful butterfly. You will need the following materials: *a sheet of paper * a marker or crayon * waxed crayon * many colors of tissue paper-cut into small shapes * liquid starch (Spray) or water-down white glue * pipe cleaners * tape

Follow the directions carefully: 1 ) Draw a butterfly outline on your paper. Put a sheet of waxed paper on top of your outline. 2) Spray starch on the wax paper. Cover the wet wax paper with pieces of tissue paper. Make any design that you want as long as you cover the whole picture. Spray the paper again and add another layer of tissue paper.

3) You may add one more layer of tissue paper if you wish. If you do this spray it again. 4) Let the butterfly dry overnight. 5) Peel off the waxed paper. Be careful not to tear your tissue paper. 6) Place your drawing under your tissue paper. Trace your butterfly on to your tissue paper.

7) Cut out your butterfly shape. 8) Place a pipe cleaner along the middle of the body. Bend the ends around the top and the bottom. Tape or glue the pipe cleaner to the body. 9) Next put a pipe cleaner through the top of the body and bend to make a V for the antennae. 10) Hang your Butterfly in the window. 11) ENJOY!!!!!
