During the summer, the Young Scholars Program operates concurrently with the center s REU and RET programs. In a paid mentored-research experience, these Young Scholars, high school students (11 th and 12 th graders), have access to research facilities. The participants are expected to fully attend the activities of the program. The students conduct engineering research under the guidance of a faculty mentor and graduate students in teams, primarily with teachers and undergraduate students. The scholars produce weekly reflections and biweekly newsletters that highlight participants and program activities. They involve themselves in weekly briefings to provide continuous feedback to the program coordinator. The participants undergo safety training as well as pre- and post-program assessments. They attend professional development seminars, workshops and related field trips.
Other deliverables include individual oral presentations, 8-minute summaries of their summer research followed by question and answer periods. Participants work with their research teams to produce research posters that compete for awards.
