LED Descriptions The LEDs indicate the status of your Powerline adapters. When you plug in the adapter, the Power LED lights up and turns green. The XWN5001 can take up to 30 seconds to come up. The adapter is not active when no Ethernet link has occurred for more than 10 minutes. The XWN5001 adapter enters power saving mode and the Power LED turns amber. By default, the power saving mode function is disabled. The Ethernet LED lights up when you connect a powered-on Ethernet device to at least one Ethernet port. The Powerline LED turns on when the adapter detects at least one other compatible Powerline device. The Pick A Plug feature lets you pick the electrical outlet with the strongest link rate, indicated by the Powerline LED color: - Green: Link rate > 80 Mbps (Best) - Amber: Link rate > 50 and < 80 Mbps (Better) - Red: Link rate < 50 Mbps (Good) 4

Press the Factory Reset button for 2 seconds to return your Powerline device to its default factory settings. Device On/Off switch.the wireless access point On/Off switch turns the XWN5001 on and off. Security button. The Security button has a double function it secures the Powerline network and also provides an easy way (WPS) for your wireless client to join the WiFi network access point. To secure the Powerline Network: Once the Powerline adapters are active, you can use the Security button to add encryption to your Powerline network. Note that security is not set for Powerline adapter by default. NETGEAR recommends that you secure your Powerline network to protect your personal information and media from unwanted access. To join a secure wireless access point using WPS: WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) lets your wireless client (such as a laptop) easily join the WiFi network of the XWN5001 access point, so you do not need to type the network name (SSID) and password. 5

On each adapter, press the Security button for > 2 but < 5 seconds, and then release. The Power LED starts blinking. The Power LED stops blinking. 2. Install the adapters. Plug the Powerline 500 adapter into a wall outlet near your router/gateway and connect it to the LAN port using an Ethernet cable. If you want to share Internet access across your home, make sure to connect the Powerline adapter to your Internet gateway. 3. Connect the Powerline WiFi access point. Plug the XWN5001 into a wall outlet where you need WiFi coverage. (Note that you can also connect an Ethernet-based device, such as a game console, set-top box or Blu-ray player, to the Internet and home network using the additional Ethernet port on the XWN5001.) 7

This room has an XWN5001 WiFi Access Point. 4. Secure your WiFi access point. There are two methods to secure your WiFi network for an XWN5001 access point. Method A: a. Launch the application on your wireless client (laptop, tablet, or smartphone). b. Refresh the WiFi network list to see the network SSID list. c.
