ICS 156 Check toe-out-on-turns (turning radius); determine necessary action. o NATEF task A4/E3, P2. ICS 156 Check SAI (steering axis inclination) and included angle; determine necessary action. o NATEF task A4/E3, P2. ICS 156 Check and adjust rear wheel toe. o NATEF task A4/E3, P2 Check rear wheel thrust angle; determine necessary action. o NATEF task A4/E3, P2 Check for front wheel setback; determine necessary action. o NATEF task A4/E3, P2 Tools and Materials Classroom vehicle(s) and/or components OEM service manual 4-wheel alignment equipment Safety glasses Procedure 1. You must understand and observe all State/Federal Regulations and personal safety procedures when carrying out the following task(s). Wear safety glasses for this entire procedure. 2. Review Measuring and Correcting Wheel Alignment in Lesson 3 of Unit 14 of the A4 course. 3. In the OEM service manual for your classroom vehicle, locate 4-wheel alignment procedure. Submit this process to your instructor or mentor for approval and then answer the following questions. 1

1. Measure front and rear suspension alignment angles following prompts on the computerized alignment display. Record specifications and your measurements below: Specified Front Camber Measured left front camber Measured right front camber Specified Cross Camber Measured cross front camber Specified Front Caster Measured left front caster Measured right front caster Specified Cross Caster Measured cross front caster Specified Front SAI Measured left front SAI Measured right front SAI Measured included angle Specified Thrust Angle Measured thrust angle 2

Specified Front Toe Measured left front toe Measured right front toe Measured total front toe Specified Rear Camber Measured left rear camber Measured right rear camber Specified Rear Toe Measured left rear toe Measured right rear toe Measured total rear toe 2. In the OEM service manual for your classroom vehicle, locate the procedure for adjusting front-wheel caster and camber and include any needed special tools. Submit this process to your instructor or mentor for approval and then answer the following questions. Make sure alignment adjustments are made in the sequence prescribed by OEM. Making adjustments in wrong sequence can result in a poor alignment. 3. Following procedure, adjust front wheel caster and camber to specifications and list below what you did: 3

4. In the OEM service manual for your classroom vehicle, locate the procedure for adjusting front toe. Submit this process to your instructor or mentor for approval and then answer the following questions. 5. Following procedure, adjust front toe to specifications and list below how you did it: 6. In the OEM service manual for your classroom vehicle, locate the procedure for adjusting rear camber and toe if adjustable. Submit this process to your instructor or mentor for approval and then answer the following questions. 7. Following procedure, adjust rear camber and toe to specifications. Note below if they were not adjustable and why: 8. If thrust angle and SAI are out of specifications, what is a possible cause and can it be corrected? 9. Measure turning radius and compare to OEM specifications. OEM specified turning radius for this vehicle is: 10. For left turn, turning radius of right front wheel was: 11. For left turn, turning radius of left front wheel was: 4

12. For right turn, turning radius of right front wheel was: 13. For right turn, turning radius of left front wheel was: 14. What are results? 15. The steering wheel is centered properly with front wheels straight ahead standing still, but steering wheel is not centered when driving vehicle. List causes of this problem: 16. Place front wheels in a straight-ahead position. 17. Using chalk or white paint, mark each tie rod sleeve in relation to tie rod, loosen sleeve clamps. 18. Position steering wheel in position it was in while driving straight ahead during road test. 19. Turn steering wheel to a centered position and note front wheel direction. 20. What direction are the front wheels turned with the steering wheel centered? 21. If steering wheel is low on left side while driving vehicle straight ahead, use a tie rod sleeve rotating tool to shorten left tie rod and lengthen right tie rod. A 1/4 turn on the tie rod sleeve moves steering wheel position approximately one inch. 22. Turn tie rod sleeves the proper amount to bring the steering wheel to a centered position. 5

23. If steering wheel is low on right side while driving vehicle straight ahead, lengthen left tie rod and shorten right tie rod. What did you need to do? 24. Mark each tie rod sleeve in its new position in relation to tie rod. Tighten the clamp bolts to OEM torque. What is OEM tie rod clamp bolt torque specification? 25. Remove vehicle from alignment rack and return it to normal condition. 26. Along with your instructor or mentor, check steering wheel position during a road test. Were you able to center the steering wheel? Task Summary Now that you have completed this NATEF task, can you think of anything (tools, information, knowledge etc.) that would have made this task easier? 6

List a customer complaint together with the cause determined by this diagnostic/ inspection task that might appear on a work order, and then list the NATEF task correction you would use to resolve the complaint. Use this rubric to rate the completion of job sheet 1 = Demonstrates exposure/observation of the competency 2 = Applies the competency but only mastered a few essential attributes of the competency 3 = Capable of the competency but needs further practice 4 = Performs the competency satisfactorily 5 = Masters the competency Instructor Mentor 7
