How to Convert to Convoy When converting an engine from conventional motor oil to Convoy it is important to first clean any sludge and deposits from the crankcase with TKO. 1. For new vehicle with less than 20,000 miles you can use Convoy at the next oil and filter change interval. 2. If your vehicle has 20,000 100,000 miles on it, run TKO and conventional motor oil for 3,000 miles before switching to convoy. 3. For engines over 100,000 miles it may be necessary to run TKO more than the one oil change interval. Keep in mind you can t run TKO too many times. While running TKO you may notice a slight increase in oil consumption at first, this is normal. The increased oil consumption is a result of the sludge and deposits burning off, once you have converted to Convoy you will not need to use TKO again. *Always change oil filter when changing oil*
Diesel Fuel Key Issues Why Diesel Plus Performance Varies Refinery #1 Refines fuel to pipeline specs (1M gallons @ -5F CFPP ) Diesel fuel In the pipeline Who made the fuel? What is the CFPP Terminal Fuel Pipeline (broker) Refinery #2 Less refining then additives to get to pipeline spec (750K gallons @ +5F CFPP) Terminals pull fuel from pipelines every couple of days, blending in storage tanks. Therefore, the fuel varies in quality over time depending on refining specifics. CFPP = Cold Filter Plugging Point Why did my fuel gel even though I was using Diesel Plus? The anti gel component of Diesel Plus works by mixing with diesel fuel and inhibiting the formation of fuel crystals or gels as the fuel cools. To work properly, it must be added while the temperature of the fuel is above the cloud point which is where crystals start to form. However, all diesel fuel is not the same. The refinery's produce diesel fuel to different specifications in the winter than they do in the summer. Also, all fuel is shipped using pipelines from the refinery to terminals. The terminals add the brand specific additives to the fuel before it is shipped to the retail service stations. Because the terminals are constantly pulling fuel out of the pipeline, there is a lot of variation in which refinery made a particular batch of fuel. The fuel from the terminal today may be from a different refinery than the fuel picked up even a day or two ago. 1 Find Answers at www.conklin.com
Diesel Fuel Key Issues When all the refineries are producing good fuel this is not a problem. If the terminal is mixing the different stocks together in storage tanks, problem fuels are diluted and cold weather problems minimized. But if a low quality batch of fuel gets sent on to fleet operations which then add Diesel Plus, sometimes the normal winter treat rate will not be sufficient and gelling problems occur. Winter fuels are refined and/or have additives to lower the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) and gel point. The gel point can be much lower than the CFPP, but the vehicle will not run if the fuel filters are plugged. Also, the specification for the filter used in the CFPP test is for a filter size that is larger than some current engines require. This will result in a CFPP value that is lower than the temperature the filter will actually plug in some real world applications. For instance many Caterpillar engines have a 2 micron secondary filter. This small filter can plug quickly even if the fuel appears to be flowing. The CFPP is a number which allows two fuels to be compared to each other but it does not guarantee a temperature at which all vehicles will operate. Sometimes early in a winter season, the fuel terminals are still working through the remaining summer stocks when the weather turns frigid. The fuels available from that terminal, and at the pumps, will not be a true winter grade and will have a corresponding high CFPP. Therefore, the addition of Diesel Plus will not always lower the gel point below the outside temperature and the fuel will still gel. Biodiesel can also be the cause of some filter plugging problems. The glycerin level in biodiesel is supposed to be below 1%, however sometimes suppliers are releasing biodiesel that is out of spec with glycerin levels of up to 4%. Glycerin has very poor cold weather characteristics. This will crystallize in fuel as the temperature drops regardless of the amount of Diesel Plus added. Therefore, if there is biodiesel present in the fuel and/or the glycerin level is high, the fuel filters can plug at low temperatures. Then it is only a matter of how much fuel needs to flow through the filter first. When a filter will plug and/or fuel gel in a particular vehicle will be determined by: 1. The particular fuels CFPP when purchased 2. How the fuel got to that CFPP (additives or refining) 3. Biodiesel quality and level 4. Treat rate of Diesel Plus 5. Filter size (mesh) in the vehicle In the winter of 2006-2007, immediately after the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) was mandated, sporadic fuel refiners could not meet the low sulfur spec and the winter grades due to changing storage tanks from regular to ULSD. Furthermore, some additives were found to be less effective with ULSD and the CFPP levels were elevated. Several terminals were found with a CFPP (+20F - +25F) that was 15 to 30 degrees higher than those typically found (-5F - +5F) in winterized diesel fuel. In these cases the normal treat rates for Diesel Plus were not adequate to keep the fuel from gelling at or below zero. 2 Find Answers at www.conklin.com
Diesel Fuel Key Issues In these cases one solution was to increase the Diesel Plus treatment by as much as double the normal treat rate. This can be effective but is not universally effective depending on the fuel. Also, because the problems were fuel specific, they were not found until after the filters had plugged. This rate increase is safe and will not harm the engine. 3 Find Answers at www.conklin.com
