Teil I 12 BE Read the texts. Do the tasks on worksheet 1. Feed me better school dinners Junk food to be banned in British schools In Britain school canteens can no longer serve cheap bangers* or burgers, and vending machines have to sell healthier options instead of crisps, chocolate and fizzy water. This is a result of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver s highprofile campaign against junk food. He put school lunches on the political programme in Britain, where obesity rates are growing faster than anywhere else in Europe. With statistics revealing that about 16 per cent of children under 11 were now obese, Jamie Oliver argued that the current generation was on course to be the first to die before its parents because of bad eating habits. This made a lot of parents think. With his reality show Jamie tried to persuade youngsters to abandon a diet of burgers and chips in favour of more nutritious food made from fresh ingredients not just at school but also at home. He also had to teach basic cooking skills to many school chefs or dinner ladies who had previously only been required to reheat pre-prepared meals. In one of his programmes Jamie cut open chicken nuggets to show the high fat ingredients in this junk food. Then he presented the students with fresh vegetables and fruit mostly unknown to them. He taught them to make healthy soups and salads. Thus he tried to convince the most stubborn parents, children and fast food junkies to change their eating habits. It was a hard learning process for everybody, but it is a first positive step into a healthy future. Jamie Oliver s message had the public concerned and over 270,000 people signed an on-line petition to support his feed me better campaign. As one more result Prime Minister Tony Blair took the necessary steps to improve school food. Nutritional standards were introduced for school meals governing levels of fat, sugar and salt. Every school now has to offer fruit like apples, oranges or bananas and a variety of tea, juice and yoghurt drinks with less than 5 per cent of sugar. From the beginning of the school year 2006/2007, chewing gum, toffees, all chocolate products, snacks and meats high in fat have been banned from school canteens. Students can have, for example, bread products like bagels, freshly made cakes, dried fruit or unsalted popcorn. To prove that good food does not mean higher costs, Jamie Oliver struggled to produce healthy meals on a budget of 37 pence per child. Jamie is proud of his achievements but he is struggling on: If we don t act now, in 100 years what will people think? They ll look back and see all the signs were there and they ll say, why didn t they do anything? More money is still needed to: Get basic cooking equipment into schools so they can start teaching kids how to cook. Fund a massive national campaign to re-educate people about proper eating. * British English: sausages (abridged from: http://www.commercialexploitation.org. http://www.jamieoliver.com/schooldinners/manifesto. http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/j/jamies_school_dinners/campaign/index.html. 31.10.2006) Sign. 12/1/2 2007

Teil II 5 BE Summarize the main ideas of the text below in complete German sentences. Mention the aim, the target group, the starting venue and the organizers of the campaign. Do not forget to describe the content of the lunch boxes. Use worksheet 2. THE STRUGGLE AGAINST UNHEALTHY NOURISHMENT It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For this reason, fresh fruit, whole grain bread, and unsweetened beverages should be found in every school lunch box. Such is the aim of the "Gesunde Brotdose" * campaign headed by Saxon Social Minister, Helma Orosz (CDU), for the Konsum Cooperative of Dresden. The kick-off event of the "Gesunde Brotdose" project took place at the Dresden International School. With the help of a nutritional scientist 40 first graders from three different classes filled their lunch boxes with healthy breakfast alternatives. "The children were very interested, and you could tell that they were having fun", commented the scientist. "I think they'll retain this knowledge for at least a little while." On the first day of school, all 4,000 first graders in Dresden received a lunch box for their snacktime food. Inside these boxes were brochures with nutritional information, a "Breakfast Circle" that showed the individual components of a balanced breakfast, as well a reference to the campaign's website, www.gesunde-brotdose.de. The organizers announced: "If indeed interest in this project persists on the side of the students and the parents, we will continue our campaign with school visits and lectures in the coming year." * Healthy Lunch Box (adapted and translated from: Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten, 05.09.2006, p. 13 by L.
