Olive Oil Division PIERALISI DIVISIONS Pieralisi revolutionized the process of olive oil extraction at the very beginning of Sixties and has become a worldwide leader in the construction of continuous cycle machinery (70% of the global market). Separation Solutions Division Pieralisi has conquered the most important world markets with its centrifuges for industrial applications. Pieralisi is indeed capable of resolving any technological problem regarding the separation of solids from liquids and liquids from liquids. The centrifugal machines of Pieralisi are used at the following applications/industries: Thickening and dewatering of the sludge produced at the WWTPs Sludge dewatering at the Water Refineries Pig and cattle manure centrifugation at the livestock farming Rendering Plants for the liquid fat, solid & water separation Slop oil clarification Biodiesel production Wineries The maximum attention to the customer satisfaction has always been a priority for the Pieralisi Group s business policy. The companies are certified with ISO 9004 & ISO 9001. 6
2-phase olive kernel treatment plant Introduction Description of the Pieralisi technology Land use planning Environmental licensing Economic analysis Investment & operational costs Business idea Scenarios Conclusions 7
Production of olive oil & wastes in 3-phase vs. 3-phase olive oil extraction 3 phase 2 phase Olive kernel (kg / tn of olives) 500 800 Liquid effluents (lit / tn of olives) 1.000 200 BOD5 of liquid effluents (g/lit) 80 10 Polyphenols in olive oil (mg/lit) 165 200 On the one hand the 2-phase olive oil extraction system produces higher quantities of olive kernel, but on the other hand much more lower quantities of liquid effluents and lower concentrations of BOD 5. The olive oil content in polyphenols is lower when it comes to the 3-phase olive oil extraction system due to the high quantities of the added water. Last but not least, the olive oil produced by the 2-phase treatment way is more in quantity (1%), of higher quality and stable to oxidation. 8
Treatment methods Mechanical methods Solid-liquid phase separation, needs further treatment Biological methods High investment & operational costs (taking into consideration that the final compost is not marketable in Greece) Important operational problems and doubtful results, as polyphenols prevents microorganisms from growing Two effluents (wastewaters and solid wastes) needing environmental terms Thermal drying Economically viable solution Final solution as there is no other by product 9
What is the 2-phase olive kernel? Description The 2-phase olive kernel is the byproduct produced from the olive oil mills that employ the 2-phase olive oil extraction method, that means no water is added and no liquid effluents are produced. The 2-phase olive kernel is the 80% of the olives treated in the olive oil mill. Composition 65% water content 32% solids content 3% oil content 10
Description of the treatment plant Storage tank Pumping system Kern separator Centrifugal plant Vertical separator Rotating drum dryer Gas treatment plant 11

13
Treatment stages Kern separation The 2-phase olive kernel is transferred to a centrifugal kern separator, which extracts the wooden part of the olive kernel. The quantity extracted constitutes the 10% of the initial product. The calorific value of the kernel wood is appr. 4.200Kcal/kg 14
Treatment stages REPASSO Olive kernel thermal treatment (malaxation). Olive oil centrifugal extraction (decanter). Centrifugal clarification through a vertical disk separator. 15
Treatment stages Thermal drying Double pass rotating drum dryer The 2-phase olive kernel enters with a humidity content of 70% and exits with a humidity of 20%. The fuel used for the drying process is the final product. The fuel gases pass through cyclons. 16
