Forest facts About 56 % of Sweden s land area is productive forest land Another 8 % is improductive forest Source: Swedish Statistical Yearbook of Forestry 2010 2

Forest facts Total standing volume on productive forest land is about 3000 million m 2, Clear-cutting->planting or seed tree stand left->natural generation Source: Swedish Statistical Yearbook of Forestry 2010 3

The forest Forestry and the forest industry directly employ about 1 % of the population Forest owners: private owners 50%, companies 25%, state and communities 25%

Swedish Forest Agency The Swedish Forest Agency is the national authority in charge of forest-related issues. We are placed under the Ministry for Rural Affairs. Eskil Erlandsson Minister for Rural Affairs Monika Stridsman Director General SFA

Swedish Forest Agency Mission - to work for a sustainable utilisation of the Swedish forests. Main task - to promote the kind of management of Sweden s forests that attains the objectives of forest policy given by the Parliament and Government Photo and copyright: Michael Ekstrand

Values Sustainable, non-exploitive use - The general public is strongly engaged in issues related to the forests and forestry. It is important for society that the forests resources are used sustainably in an economic, ecological and social context.

Forest policy Regeneration mandatory, SFA 1902 The Forestry Act from1993 places equal emphasis on two main objectives: production goals and environmental goals

Forest policy Sweden s forest is a national resource biodiversity, timber, pulp, bioenergy, mushrooms and berries, wild game, beauty, recreation, etc The Swedish Forest Agency strive for: forest management that give sustainable high production and maintain biodiversity to improve means for securing social values

Strategy for preserving forest Larger areas Improductive forest biodiversity National parks and reserves Key habitats Habitat protection, nature conservation agreements, volontary reserves, saved at clear-cuttings: dead wood, a few old trees, shrubs, etc Action plans for red-listed species

SFA climate change policy global perspective Replanting forest in deforested regions valuable mitigating effect in regions where conditions are developing favouring forest preservation and utilization of forest for a socioeconomic sustainable development Reduced deforestation - to be achieved partly through poverty reduction and socioeconomic development A long-term and sustainable management ought to be practised at all types of forestry and bioenergy production around the world
