CANDIDATE A COMMENTARY Total mark: 32/35 Content: 19/20 The candidate responds fully to the task and her answer is entirely relevant, while staying close at 219 words to the recommended minimum length. The structure of the piece is well organised and logical, taking the stimulus letter as a starting point and then offering suitable opinions and advice. She starts with her reaction to the letter as a whole keine Panik! and supports this reaction by reassuring Anna that her parents have her best interests at heart. The candidate then mentions Anna s brother, with whom she agrees. She justifies her opinion by explaining how family life will be better without conflict between the two parents. She points out that separation may also benefit Anna s parents, which is an appropriate response to the statement Ich liebe beide Eltern in the stimulus letter. In her second paragraph the candidate acknowledges that separation will be difficult at first but offers specific advice on how to overcome those difficulties. She finishes her answer on a positive note viel Glück! Range of vocabulary: 4/5 The candidate supplies a range of appropriate vocabulary for AS level, e.g. gegenseitige Liebe, beitragen, Unterstützung, Berater. However the vocabulary in some sentences is relatively simple, so a mark of 4 rather than 5 is awarded. Range of structures: 5/5 The candidate uses a good number of subordinate clauses with dass, wenn and wo, as well as infinitive clauses with zu and one relative clause. The candidate also makes appropriate use of modal verbs, command forms and the conditional with würde. Accuracy: 4/5 The German is largely accurate but there are a few basic errors, e.g. über der Schultag, trennen viele Paare sich (word order), die Zukunft deines Familie. 4 klm

CANDIDATE B COMMENTARY Total mark: 19/35 Content: 11/20 The response to the task is generally relevant, but treatment is often superficial. For example, the candidate writes half way down the first paragraph that it may be better for the parents to separate, but instead of developing that point she then refers in a rather disjointed fashion to enjoyment and stability. In the second paragraph, the candidate states that it is important for the children to have both parents together, which appears to contradict her opinion in the first paragraph. Some individual points are clearly expressed, but the sense of some sentences is unclear e.g. alles kann nicht gewonnen (sic) in the first paragraph and the use of pre-learned phrases such as nach langer Überlegung and letztendlich is not always appropriate. Range of vocabulary: 3/5 The candidate uses some variety of vocabulary appropriate to the task, e.g. auf die Dauer, verallgemeinen, günstig. However most sentences consist mainly of common words. Range of structures: 3/5 The candidate uses some variety of grammatical structures, with a good number of subordinate clauses, one occurrence of um zu and one occurrence of seit with the present tense. However many candidates will use a wider variety of verb tenses, case endings etc. at this level. Accuracy: 2/5 Although the candidate shows a sound grasp of subordinate word order, she makes a few major errors with verb constructions such as sich trennen sind and dass du deine Eltern sich trennen wollen, as well as a number of basic errors with cases such as mit beide Eltern, mit die Zukunft. 8 klm

CANDIDATE C COMMENTARY Total mark: 34/35 Content: 20/20 The candidate s response to the task is fully relevant with a good depth of treatment. Her numerous points are clearly expressed and justified with appropriate statistics and examples. She begins with a suitably punchy assessment of the situation eine Katastrophe! before describing the consequences of being overweight, not just the physical consequences such as the risk of diabetes and heart disease but also the likely social consequences such as isolation and the risk of bullying. The candidate then explains why so many people are overweight, again giving specific examples rather than relying on bland statements about unhealthy eating. In her final paragraph the candidate offers plausible and well reasoned solutions, with advice not only for parents and schools but also for each individual member of society du, ich, wir müssen die Verantwortung übernehmen. Range of vocabulary: 5/5 A wide range of appropriate vocabulary, e.g. Zuckerkrankheit, Lebenserwartung, zurückgehen, Opfer, beunruhigend, verantwortlich, ausgewogene Diät. Range of structures: 5/5 Very good variety of grammatical structures: a good (but not excessive!) number of subordinate clauses, infinitive clauses with zu, and other constructions such as ein Mangel an, achten auf and etwas Aktives. The candidate uses the language confidently and does not rely on familiar sentence patterns and constructions. Accuracy: 4/5 Largely accurate, but with a few basic errors, e.g. übergewicht (for übergewichtig), heutzutages (for heutige), enthaltet, ein Sport treiben. 12 klm
