Supporting Students and Changing Lives Undergraduate Bursaries 2015-2016

I do not come from the wealthiest of backgrounds. I felt that I needed some help so that I didn t have to spend every free moment working in a part-time job. Innes Jarmson, BSc Biological Sciences Scotland Accommodation Bursary

Scotland Accommodation Bursaries For students who usually live in Scotland Our bursary arrangements for Scotland domiciled undergraduate students who are eligible to receive a guaranteed offer of University accommodation, reflect our commitment to widening access to Scotland domiciled students. The Scotland Accommodation Bursary provides the most generous bursary support offered by any UK university to Scotland domiciled students. Bursaries of between 500 and 2,000 are being offered to undergraduate students who begin their degree programme in the 2015-2016 academic session and who are in receipt of a Young Students Bursary (YSB) or an Independent Students Bursary (ISB) from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). You will receive an accommodation bursary for every year of study that you receive a YSB or an ISB. There is no application form for the Scotland Accommodation Bursary. The University will use the level of government bursary provided through the Young Students Bursary or the Independent Students Bursary to assess your bursary entitlement. Please note that in order to be automatically assessed for a Scotland Accommodation Bursary you must apply to be financially assessed by SAAS. Should you decide to live in University accommodation, your bursary will be paid directly to Accommodation Services. If you choose to live in a privately rented accommodation, your bursary will be paid into your bank account by BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing Services). Further details on eligibility are available on our website at www.ed.ac.uk/studentfunding/scotland For students entering in 2015 Young Students Bursary Scotland Accommodation Bursary 1,750 2,000 1,000 1,000 500 500 Independent Students Bursary Scotland Accommodation Bursary 750 2,000

University of Edinburgh Bursaries For students who usually live in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Our generous bursary arrangements for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland domiciled undergraduate students reflects our aim of recruiting the brightest and best students regardless of their financial situation. The University of Edinburgh Bursary provides the most generous bursary support of any UK university for those with a family income of less than 16,000. Bursaries of between 500 and 7,000 are being offered to England, Wales and Northern Ireland domiciled undergraduate students who begin their degree programme in the 2015-2016 academic session and are liable for the 9,000 tuition fee. There is no application form for the University of Edinburgh Bursary. The University will use the residual household income figure calculated by the Student Loans Company (SLC) when assessing your bursary entitlement. Please note that in order to be automatically assessed for an Edinburgh Bursary you must apply to be financially assessed by your regional funding body - Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, or Student Finance Northern Ireland. When you make your application for student finance you must opt for means-tested assessment and give consent for information to be shared with us for bursary administration purposes. Any family members whose income is assessed as part of your student finance application will also need to give their consent to share as well. You will be able to use your bursary to either contribute towards your tuition fee costs or towards your general living costs while at Edinburgh. Your bursary will be paid directly into your bank account by BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing Services). As the University of Edinburgh Bursary is serviced by the Student Loans Company (SLC), they will use the bank account details which you supplied to your regional funding body for bursary payments. www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/ruk For students entering in 2015 Residual household income Edinburgh Bursary (England / Northern Ireland) Edinburgh Bursary (Wales) up to 16,000 7,000 3,685* 16,001-20,000 5,700 3,685* 20,001-25,000 4,000 3,685* 25,001-30,000 2,000 2,000 30,001-35,000 1,500 1,500 35,001-42,600 500 500 * this amount may change depending on the level of the Welsh Government Learning Grant for 2015

My bursary has been a great help especially studying medicine where I often need to take buses out to the hospital or to GP practices. The funding has also allowed me to get more involved outside my course and to go on tour for example with the medic s football team and the University choir. James Lane, MBChB Medicine University of Edinburgh Bursary

Unite Foundation Student Awards For students who usually live in England, Wales and Northern Ireland A number of Unite Foundation Student Awards are available to students commencing an undergraduate degree in the 2015-2016 academic session. It is likely that each award will cover the full accommodation costs while staying at Portsburgh Court in Edinburgh for the length of their period of study (maximum of four years), as well as provide an annual maintenance allowance of 3,000 per year for a maximum of four years. Full details on the eligibility criteria and online application procedure are available on our website at www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/unite

My funding has helped me greatly and has allowed me to buy most of the law books that I needed for my course. It has also enabled me to buy a bus pass to commute from my home to university every day. Sarah Buzuk, LLB Law Access Bursary

Access Bursaries For UK students An Access Bursary provides at least 1,000 per year of study. When considering applications, the University will consider financial need, as well as personal and family circumstances which might make it difficult for you to take up your university place. Whether you are in your last year at school, or are returning to education, and thinking about applying to the University of Edinburgh to study for an undergraduate degree, you should consider applying for a bursary. A bursary is an amount of money awarded to a student based on criteria such as income, background and personal circumstances. A bursary is like a grant you don t have to repay it. The University of Edinburgh offers over 120 Access Bursaries each year to UK students to help them take up their place at the University. Applications for a bursary in the 2015-2016 academic session can be made online at any time. We have two rounds of applications. The deadline for the first round is 1 April 2015 (results known in April 2015) and the deadline for our second round is 30 June 2015 (results known in July 2015). You should have applied for admission to the University of Edinburgh for a place starting in September 2015 before making a bursary application. As part of your application, you will need to arrange for someone who is familiar with your financial, personal, or family circumstances to provide a reference in support of your application. Your referee can be a teacher from your school or college, or another appropriate professional such as a social worker or GP. Once you have submitted your online application, we will contact your referee to provide a reference on your behalf. You can apply online for a bursary at www. ed.ac.uk/student-funding/bursaries-apply

My bursary has helped me to buy materials for my Sculpture degree. It s such a relief not having to worry about finding cash to make my work. The bursary has helped me to concentrate solely on my course and to achieve the most that I can. James Boyle, BA Sculpture Access Bursary

Fifteen awards will be available to UK students commencing their undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh. Each award provides: an award to help with living costs and study materials performance-related cash awards for good grades end of course excellence awards for top scholars a chance to learn valuable transferable skills and boost your employability through lectures, workshops and events run by Lloyds Banking Group real, hands-on work experience on up to two summer paid internships; and access to advice and support from a dedicated mentor. Please note, if you are successful in being selected as a Lloyds scholar, this will not affect your entitlement to an Access Bursary, Scotland Accommodation Bursary, or an University of Edinburgh Bursary. Further details on these awards and how to apply can be found at www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/lloyds-scholars

I heard about the bursaries at one of the Open Days and I also received e-mails from the University advising me about them. The University of Edinburgh was the only university that I really wanted to go to because of its excellent reputation as one of the highest ranking universities in Europe. Shaneen Fleming, LLB Law Access Bursary
