Andrafol. Film laminated packaging steel. ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein ThyssenKrupp
Andrafol. Product characteristics and benefits. Andrafol is a specially coated packaging material, offering the benefits of steel combined with an organic coating. We use tinplate (Andralyt) or specially chromium coated steel/eccs (Ancrolyt) as basic materials. The coating film consists of Polyethylene-Terephthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE) or lacquer and can be applied in various combinations. The benefits of Andrafol: - Excellent forming properties - Full surface corrosion protection - Free from pores - Optimal scratch resistance - Uniform layer thickness - Sealing function - Heat sealing ability - Excellent recycleability
The coating methods. A look at the technology. Andrafol is most suitable for a vast variety of applications, because the manufacturing process allows simultaneous coating of both surfaces with different coating materials of various thicknesses. It is possible either to coat one side with a PP-film or to laminate the strip on one or both sides with a PET-film, PE-film or lacquer. The combination of film/lacquer is also possible. For these applications we use the following coating methods: Method A Without any adhesive agent a plastic film (mainly PET) is thermally laminated onto a wide ECCS strip in a continuous process, free of solvent. The film is applied to a preheated strip. Since the temperature is above the melting temperature of the plastic, the film is partially melted onto the strip. In this area the crystalline plastic is converted into an amorphous condition, which creates adhesion. The remaining crystalline part of the plastic film is responsible for the corrosion resistance. Method B A PET-film, which has been previously provided with an adhesive layer, is applied to a wide ECCS strip. Unlike method A this material is intended for and requires subsequent printing or lacquering. During the coating process the strip temperature is lower than the PET-melting temperature. Final adhesion of this coating is achieved by the drying process during lacquering/printing. After this the material is ready for forming. Method C An adhesive is applied to a wide strip prior to the laminating process. We use this method for the coating of tinplate and ECCS with PET- or PP-film. Method D Wide coils of tinplate or ECCS are coated with lacquer by roller application. The lacquer is dried and cured in a subsequent drying oven.
Applications for Andrafol. Versatile, attractive, safe. With its PET-, PP- or PE-coating, Andrafol offers higher scratch resistance and a better corrosion protection than most of the highly complex lacquer systems and, at the same time, providing an appealing surface. The use of Andrafol has been particulary established for the following applications: Cones and domes for aerosol cans. Andrafol is widely used in this area, especially for aerosol cans likely to be stored in areas with high humidity, such as shaving cream in the bathroom. Due to the outer PET-coating these cones and domes have a far higher scratch and corrosion resistance than lacquered components. Valve mounting cups for aerosol cans. With PP-coated material an excellent sealing function between the valve mounting cup and the cone of the can is achieved. This material saves the use of a sealing compound and therefore one step in the production process.
Easy open ends for food cans. For the manufacture of easy open ends Andrafol is the ideal material due to its reliable anticorrosive properties, even in the rivet and score line area. A subsequent repair lacquering of the end is not necessary. Furthermore, the heat sealing ability of the film coating offers the basic prerequisite for modern peelable opening systems. Components for general line containers. Plastic coated lids, ends and endrings ensure excellent corrosion resistance and improved sealing function. Components with this kind of coating are particulary suitable for water based products. Lacquered strip. Lacquered valve mounting cups for aerosol cans and lacquered tab stock for convenient opening systems, as well as semi-finished parts are established components of modern packaging which save one process step during the manufacturing of cans and therefore reduce cost.
