Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (An organization of Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India) Admission Bulletin Regional Level Guide Training Programme 2013 General Linguistic Guide / General Guide a) Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM), an autonomous organization of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, is one of the premier Institutes in the country offering education, training, research and consultancy in the field of tourism, travel and allied sectors. IITTM was established in 1983 and presently IITTM campuses are located at Gwalior, Bhubaneswar, Goa, New Delhi and Nellore. IITTM is a founder member of UN-ESCAP promoted Network of Asia-Pacific Educational and Training Institute in Tourism (APETIT). Besides teaching, research, consultancy and extension, IITTM is involved in guide training programme. Looking to the demands of Indian and global economy, our trainings enable trainees to acquire the right skill set with ample flexibility to adapt to situations as they arise in real time. b) Regional Level Guide Training Programme IITTM is entrusted with the responsibility of organizing Regional Level Guide Training Programme (RLGTP) on behalf of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. These programmes are organized following the new guidelines (No. 7 TT.II (07)/2000 GD Vol.II Dated: 22nd September 2011) available at: www.iittm.org As per the guidelines, there shall be four categories of guides- General, General-Linguistic, Expert guides and Expert-Linguistic. This is a call for admission to training programme for General Linguistic Guide from Northern, Southern, Western& Central, Eastern Regions and General Linguistic and General Guide from North Eastern Region. Programmes are proposed to be offered at following venues: Eastern and North Eastern regions Southern region Northern and Western & Central regions IITTM Bhubaneswar IITTM Nellore IITTM Gwalior and IITTM Delhi 2

c) Eligibility Eligibility of the candidates is determined on the basis of education, age and domicile as given below: Educational The following educational qualifications are prescribed for the selection of tourist guides and all applicants should have fulfilled the criteria on or by September 27, 2013. 1. A Graduate of a recognized University; or, Holder of three year Degree in Tourism/Hospitality; or, Diploma in Archaeology from an Institute recognized by UGC, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), AICTE or any other State / Central Government body (for all). Age limit 2. Candidate should have knowledge and fluency in a foreign language (apart from English) in which he/she aspires to become a guide (for linguistic guides only). 3. Candidates should have studied English at 10+2 level (for General Guides only). The applicant shall be of at least 20 years of age on September 27, 2013 and those who are 65 years or more will have to produce a Medial Fitness Certificate from Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) of Physical and Mental fitness. Acceptable certificates: 1. High school/ Secondary school mark sheet 2. Birth certificate issued by municipality or other authorized local government body. Domicile The applicant must be a bonafide resident of the state/ UT falling within the concerned region in which he/she wants to be licensed and trained as tour guide. Domicile is determined by any one of the following: Acceptable certificates: 1. Certificate of residence proof by competent authority 2. Passport 3. Voter identity card 4. Ration card d) Seats Number of seats assessed in different regions for training and licensing is as follows: Northern Region (Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Union Territory of Chandigarh) 64 Chinese (Official Mandarin Based)-24, Korean-3, Bahasa Malaysia-11, Indonesian- 3, Arabic-14, Thai-9. Southern Region (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territories of Pondicherry and Lakshadweep) 165 Russian- 10, Chinese (Official Mandarin Based)- 64, Japanese-17, Korean-14, Bahasa Malaysia -38, Indonesian-3, Arabic-13, Thai-6, 3

Eastern Region (States of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands) 30 Russian- 1, Chinese (Official Mandarin Based)- 12, Korean-2, Bahasa Malaysia-1, Thai-14, North-Eastern Region (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura) 37 Chinese (Official Mandarin Based)- 12 English-25 e) Admission process Application Applicants shall submit their applications in the prescribed Proforma along with photocopies of all documents required as proof of their eligibility and in no case applicants would be allowed to submit any additional documents as proof at a later stage. Candidates must also ensure that they affix identical photos at desired places on the application form. Applicants shall also keep at least five more similar photos ready for use at different points during the admission. Use of different photographs would not be allowed. Incomplete and/ or late delivered applications shall be summarily rejected. IITTM shall not be responsible for any postal delay. Entrance Examination An entrance examination would be conducted to evaluate the general intelligence and suitability of applicants for admission to guide training. The entrance test would be of three hours duration and cover the following subjects: A. Knowledge of Monuments/Tourism destinations of the region 100 B. Indian history and Indian Culture 100 C. General Knowledge 100 This test will be conducted in the foreign language chosen by the candidate in which he / she aspires to become a linguistic guide. The test for General Guides will be in English language. To qualify an applicant must score at least 150 marks out of total marks of 300 in the written test. Mere qualifying the written exam does not entitle a candidate for training. Selection is against the prescribed number of seats on the basis of merit. In no case would qualifying the written test give right of admission to training. The seats advertised for training would be allotted strictly as per the merit list of the qualifying written test. In case the number of candidates qualifying the written test happens to be lesser than the number of seats available, the admission would be limited to the candidates who qualify. 4

Preparation of merit In case of a tie at cut-off level in the merit list, the merit will be decided on the basis of following: First on the basis of score in paper A followed by score in paper B. If tie still persists, score in paper C will be considered. If the tie is not resolved through the above, the age of applicants will be considered for deciding merit and those older in age will be placed higher in merit list of RLGs. Separate merit lists shall be prepared language wise for each region. Counselling, document verification and allotment of training seats On the basis of merit in the entrance examination, the qualifying applicants would be called for an open counselling and documents verification. The admission against available seats would be offered strictly on the basis of merit basis subject to fulfilment of all the prescribed eligibility conditions. The candidates shall present themselves in person to claim seat for training and shall report on the time and at the venue notified by IITTM or the designated institute. The applicants shall submit all original documents for verification at the time of counselling. Failure to produce original documents would lead to rejection of candidature. All documents submitted by candidates shall be sent for verification to the issuing agencies. If the documents are not verifiable or found to be incorrect at any time during the training, the candidature of applicant would be cancelled. f) Fees The training programme is supported by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. However, there is subsidized fee of Rs. 25, 000/- (Rs. Twenty five thousand only) for the training programme. Fee would be payable at the time of counselling through a demand draft in favour of Director- IITTM payable at Gwalior. This fee does not include lodging and boarding during the programme. Hostels may be provided to trainees at IITTM Gwalior and Bhubaneswar and Delhi campuses if available. If such facility is availed by the trainee he/she must pay the prescribed fee for the same. g) Training The training has two components. There will be 20 weeks class room teaching/ training followed by a six week field training. During the training, the trainees would be imparted knowledge of essential guiding skills, tourism products/aspects of the States within the region, and fair knowledge of social, political and economic policies etc., of the entire country. Field training I. The field training would be given at all important Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Protected Monuments which are open to tourists and would also include special practical training as well as visits to important landmarks, places of interest etc., in the region. Before taking up such field training in any of the ASI monument, ASI would be consulted in advance. II. III. During the training course frequent group discussions shall be arranged to improve their interactive and relational abilities. After the training is over, the candidates would submit a report of their learning before the viva-voce. 5

h) Evaluation at the end of the training On the completion of training programme, all candidates would be evaluated through an examination consisting of a written test and viva voce. Written test The written test would be of 200 marks covering the entire syllabus during the training course and the guide -trainees must secure minimum 100 marks in the written test to be eligible for viva voce. Viva-Voce After passing the written test the trainees would undergo a viva voce test of 100 marks where the guiding skills, knowledge of the monuments / destinations, communication skills, fluency in foreign language (wherever applicable) etc., would be tested. For General Tourist Guides a viva voce would be of 100 marks for testing the guiding skills, communication skills etc. The trainee has to secure a minimum of 50 marks in the viva voce test to pass. The viva voce shall be conducted by a panel of two external experts. Trainees would be eligible for successful completion of guide training certificate after passing both the written test and viva-voce. Supplementary Examination In case the candidate does not secure minimum passing marks in the written test or viva-voce after training; he would be given two opportunities to appear for supplementary examination and viva voce, at an interval of three months, each counted from the date of declaration of last result. If a candidate fails to pass in the supplementary chances, his candidature would be cancelled. After all supplementary chances are exhausted; candidate would have to seek fresh admission and repeat the guide selection and training process. i) Attendance A minimum of 80 per cent attendance, both in class room teaching and field training, taken separately, would be essential before taking the final examination. However, relaxation up to 10% can be given by the Director, IITTM or the concerned authority in the approved / designated Institute handling / conducting the course, in genuine cases of sickness, specific family circumstances or other - wise satisfactory reasons. j) Issuance of certificate/ guide license On successful completion of the training, fulfilling requirements of attendance and success at training-end examination and viva voce IITTM would issue a certificate of successful participation. Such successful candidates would be issued Regional Level Tourist Guide License by the Regional India Tourism Office(s), Government of India as per the provisions of the guidelines. k) Documents to be attached The applicants must attach an attested (by gazetted officer) photocopy of the following documents with the application form a. Proof of Date of Birth 6

b. Proof of qualifying examination (Graduation) c. Proof of having English as a subject at 10+2 levels (for General Guides only) d. Proof of domicile of the state/ut falling in the concerned region e. Physical-cum-mental fitness certificate (only in case of applicants who are more than 65 years of age). Such a certificate should have been issued after May 18, 2012 (within 6 months from the last date of application i.e., November 18, 2013). f. However, Ministry of Tourism- Government of India reserves the right to make changes in requirements and regulations for admission, regulation for continuing the courses, contents of the courses, fee charges, or regulations affecting students, or make any other suitable modifications in any matter incidental or ancillary thereto, should these be deemed necessary in interest of the trainees or profession or the institute.
