Tip Classification 1. Networking : Routers Configuring a BT Home Hub 2.0 to Perform Dynamic DNS Updates The BT Home Hub 2.0 is a 4 port Ethernet switch and ADSL modem router with firewall capability. It is provided by BT for use by domestic and small business users as part of their broadband service. These users are not normally allocated a static IP address for their service but a temporary one instead that changes intermittently. When it actually changes (the lease period) is determined by BT and there is nothing a customer can do to prevent this so it makes connecting by IP address extremely difficult. Overview Internet based Dynamic DNS companies offer a service whereby you may create yourself an account and associate with that account a descriptive name and a corresponding IP address. When their database is queried asking for that descriptive name, they return the IP address held in their records, the application (usually the client software) is then pointed at that IP address, ie: your broadband connection. This is like looking in a phone book for somebody s name because their phone number keeps changing. Obviously, for this to be effective, their database records need to be updated by the customer every time the IP address changes this functionality is built into many routers nowadays, including the BT Home Hub 2.0 One of the first companies to offer this service was Dynamic Network Services Inc, www.dyndns.com. Their free service allows individuals to register one account and associate with it a single record. The BT Home Hub 2.0 supports DynDNS as a service provider (amongst others). This document describes the steps involved to implement Dynamic DNS specifically using DynDNS.

Page : 2 of 10 Prerequisites These instructions assume you have 1. an email address 2. internet access via the Home Hub 3. configured the Home Hub s port forwarding (and confirmed it s working to the DVR) Tasks to be Performed The tasks you need to perform are 1. Initiate the creation of an account on the DynDNS website, including responding to the email confirmation request from DynDNS, then completing the account creation process with DynDNS 2. Enable Dynamic DNS in the BT Home Hub 2.0 3. Change the client software to use the new domain name Task 1 : Creating & Activating an Account with DynDNS Log onto DynDNS.com at www.dyndns.com In the bottom left hand corner, choose a distinctive and descriptive name for your broadband connection, then select from the drop down list, click Add The combination of your descriptive name and the selection made from the drop down list must be unique and must not be in use already by another person if it is clicking on Add will return an error screen. This first step verifies that the chosen combination is unique.

Page : 3 of 10 The next step is to create an account with a username and password needed for logon to the website. Your username needs to unique and must not be already in use by another person. You must also identify yourself by entering your email address, this address must be valid and must exist as a confirmation email will be sent to you. Optionally tick (or clear) the check boxes to control receipt of advertising material. Enter the code displayed in the Security Image graphic panel. Tick the box to agree to the terms and conditions of usage (after reading them). Click on Create Account At this point a confirmation email will be sent to you. The email you receive will contain an acceptance link that you must click on in order to continue. You have 48 hours to click on the email link, failure to do so will result in the account details entered so far being deleted.

Page : 4 of 10 After clicking on the confirmation link in the email, the process continues with an acknowledgment screen. Click on activate your free DynDNS hostname You are now presented with a Shopping Cart containing a Dynamic DNS Host priced at $0.00 Free accounts are only eligible for one free host. Click on Next >>

Page : 5 of 10 Click on Activate Services This last page confirms that your host name has been successfully activated and indicates your current IP address. Finally, click on Logout at the top of the screen to clear your logon session with this server. BT-08

Page : 6 of 10 Task 2 : Enabling Dynamic DNS in the BT Home Hub 2.0 The BT Home Hub 2.0 does support DynDNS as a service provider. The following text describes how to configure it so that the router performs fully automated, completely unattended updates when necessary. Use your browser to log onto the BT Home Hub 2.0. In the address bar, type http://192.168.1.254 Enter the password when prompted. From the opening screen, click on BT-09 Settings

Page : 7 of 10 Then from the Settings screen, click on Advanced Settings BT-11 Then click on Continue to Advanced Settings Then click on Broadband

Page : 8 of 10 Then click on Dynamic DNS Select Use Dynamic DNS Service = Yes

Page : 9 of 10 In the configuration fields, enter Your username Your password Confirm the password Select Service = dyndns Use multiple hosts = No Your hostname Click on Apply Note that your username, password and hostname are those used during the DynDNS account creation described in Task 1. Task 3 : Configure the Client Software to Connect via a Domain Name You must edit a device s property page in the PC client software changing the numerical IP address to an alphanumeric domain name. The two Alien clients are very similar but are slightly different as described below. IPPowerVision Client Log onto the IPPowerVision client and click on the Configure tab Double click on a device entry in the middle pane to edit it s properties Set the Register type to Normal Domain Enter the domain name you registered via DynDNS Click on Ok
