Tip Classification 1. Networking : Routers Configuring a BT Home Hub 2.0 to Perform Dynamic DNS Updates The BT Home Hub 2.0 is a 4 port Ethernet switch and ADSL modem router with firewall capability. It is provided by BT for use by domestic and small business users as part of their broadband service. These users are not normally allocated a static IP address for their service but a temporary one instead that changes intermittently. When it actually changes (the lease period) is determined by BT and there is nothing a customer can do to prevent this so it makes connecting by IP address extremely difficult. Overview Internet based Dynamic DNS companies offer a service whereby you may create yourself an account and associate with that account a descriptive name and a corresponding IP address. When their database is queried asking for that descriptive name, they return the IP address held in their records, the application (usually the client software) is then pointed at that IP address, ie: your broadband connection. This is like looking in a phone book for somebody s name because their phone number keeps changing. Obviously, for this to be effective, their database records need to be updated by the customer every time the IP address changes this functionality is built into many routers nowadays, including the BT Home Hub 2.0 One of the first companies to offer this service was Dynamic Network Services Inc, www.dyndns.com. Their free service allows individuals to register one account and associate with it a single record. The BT Home Hub 2.0 supports DynDNS as a service provider (amongst others). This document describes the steps involved to implement Dynamic DNS specifically using DynDNS.
