Preparation It is always an exciting time when you receive new curriculum. The anticipation of teaching and learning with your child is new and fresh. Like the air after a spring shower, it is invigorating. You can t wait until you can get started. Open the materials, establish course access and take a look around. Get familiar with all of the tools. Let your child share in the excitement and catch the enthusiasm you have for starting this new adventure. Once you get familiar with the material, you may experience the overwhelming feeling that is common to homeschool parents: How will I ever cover all of this material? You may be flooded with insecurities that you don t know, or remember, the subject or content. All of these are normal thoughts and experiences for anyone who has homeschooled. Remember the value of the journey you are on. Focus on the reasons you chose to homeschool in the first place, the daily interaction with your child, and teaching them how to learn. As the tutor, you as the parent don t have to know all of the material. It s fine to learn it with your child as you go through the material together. You are the guide for your child as you journey with them through the learning process. Once you have logged in and created your course, familiarize yourself with each of the tabs, screens and links.

Product Information MyReadingLab is an online, mastery-based program for assessing and developing the basic skills that your child needs to succeed and prepare for the rigors of college and beyond. MyReadingLab includes three powerful components that help you assess, remediate, master, and measure success. Path Builder Path Builder is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that puts your child on a personalized learning path in reading. Path Builder diagnostic tests are pre-built to align with prerequisite college-level skills, common career-readiness or workplace standards or can be customized to fit specific goals.

Learning Path Once your child completes a diagnostic Path Builder test, they receive a personalized set of content modules in a format called the Learning Path. Each content module covers a general concept such as Sentences. Once inside a module, they can take a brief Skills Check diagnostic test, which defines the exact smaller topics they need to understand in order to prove mastery for the module. These smaller topics include ideas related to the larger module concept like Identifying Verbs.

Activities The heart of MyReadingLab is the depth and range of its pre-built learning activities, each designed to help your child gain confidence and proficiency in specific skills. Your child can work in activities at their own pace and can leave and return to work at the exact location they left off. Each activity is scored and tracked in a comprehensive gradebook and your child can review their submitted activities at any time.

Reading Lexile Locator The Lexile Locator diagnoses your child s reading ability over time. It begins with a Locator Test that estimates your child s initial reading level and continues by providing readings and accompanying diagnostic tests that incrementally adjust the estimate of the your child s reading level with increasing precision. The Lexile system re-diagnoses your child with additional readings, and through these additional readings and tests your child gets a much more precise and reliable estimate of his or her reading ability.

Ensuring Mastery Any time a Path Builder skill assessment, quiz or test is taken, the personalized activities page and skills set summary is updated. Mastery is measured by the percentage of questions your child answers correctly. The default setting for mastery is 80%. You can adjust the mastery level to fit your child s performance expectations. Once mastery level on the objective is achieved, a gold star indicates that the concept is mastered and your child can move on to the next activity or topic in their learning path. A pencil indicates further study is needed.

Adapt the Curriculum One of the great benefits of homeschooling is that you know the instruction is personal. Everything you teach will be personalized to fit your child. The MyReadingLab program is designed to provide personalized instruction. The lessons are easy to pace and offer enrichment activities and additional support when necessary. Pacing As you progress through the material you will find that your child grasps certain lessons with ease, while needing more time and practice on other sections. Adapt your pace accordingly. You can progress faster if your child comprehends the material quickly and assign fewer practice lessons when you are confident that he or she has an understanding of the material. On the other hand, if more time is required, it s easy to slow the pace down a bit. This will allow you to keep your child engaged and interested. It s more important to ensure understanding and evolve to your child s pace than simply move through the material at a predetermined rate. Course Timeline There are 11 Fundamental modules, 28 Introductory modules, 27 Intermediate modules and 27 Advanced modules included in the course. You should determine how much time to spend each week per unit in order to complete the course by your desired deadline. To complete all 93 modules in 36 weeks, approximately 2 days per module is needed. Teaching is Everywhere Another part of the homeschool benefit is that teaching can occur all of the time. You can incorporate learning into everyday life. When you are outside of school ask your child about concepts learned in previous lessons. Tie them into life situations and the world s events. Plan field trips and take your lessons into the field the subjects appear everywhere from grocery stores to museum gift shops to sporting events. Getting outside of the classroom is exciting. It s a great way to break up the style of instruction and will help your child process the material in a different way. Use your own resources to complement the material.

Conflicting Materials Any homeschool parent will be faced with the dilemma of what to do when you come across material in the curriculum you don t like or that you disagree with. No curriculum will ever be able to satisfy all of the beliefs, opinions, or values held by each family. However, there are several approaches you can take in these situations. One approach is to skip over the material in question and/or unassign the content in the customizable instructor course builder. Another suggestion would be to use this as an opportunity for a special, teachable moment. Review the material with your child. Discuss your feelings about the material, idea, or value presented. Take the opportunity to prepare your child for the diversity of thought/opinion in the world and the need to be discerning of principles and ideas that may challenge yours. There is a definite balance between having the freedom that homeschooling brings and the responsibility you assume in educating your child. The good news is that most families find that balance and it works for them. As you progress along the journey, you will have moments of frustration and moments that make it all worthwhile. Remember to keep it in perspective. Homeschool parents live for those moments when their children are most teachable. You will know when those moments happen as you can see the light go on, they really get it. Cherish those times and use them as the fuel to motivate you through the tough times.
