Les activites du PNUD dans le domaine de la biodiversite NBSAP Workshop for Central Africa 22 25 September 2008, Limbe, Cameroon

The Energy & Environment Group Goal: to strengthen national capacity to manage the environment in a sustainable manner while ensuring adequate protection of the poor; How? mainstream environmental and energy issues into development planning, mobilize finance for improved environmental management, address increasing threats from climate change, and build local capacity to better manage the environment and deliver services, especially water and energy. 2

UNDP s position on Biodiversity, Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Protected Areas; Communities and Biodiversity; Climate Change and Biodiversity. 3

Mainstreaming biodiversity at UNDP Mainstreaming of biodiversity into development policies, Mainstreaming of biodiversity management into the activities of production sectors (biodiversity offsetting), Sensitize financial managers to the investment opportunities offered by biodiversity-friendly businesses, Empower communities by building their capacity, often through cooperatives, so that they can apply to credit institutions for funding or establish their own micro-credit facilities. 4

Mainstreaming biodiversity at UNDP Poverty and Environment Facility A central initiative to support environmental mainstreaming, A Nairobi-based unit that will build on UNDP and UNEP collaboration on the Poverty and Environment Initiative, The facility will provide technical products and services to regional offices to mainstream environment into national development planning, and will extend services in areas such as biodiversity and ecosystem services for development. 5

UN-REDD Initiative A Collaborative Program on REDD in developing countries Grew out notably through requests from rainforest countries to address issues related on forest and climate change on a coordinated and articulated manner, particularly amongst donors; Aims at generating the requisite transfer flow of resources to significantly reduce global emissions from deforestation and forest degradation; The critical factor is to ensure that all the initiatives can contribute to the final UNFCCC negotiations on post-2012 framework. 14

UNDP role Limited resources from UNDP and GEF UNDP is acting as the UN coordinator Key roles: Coordinate UN efforts Leverage funds from other donors Build countries capacity of negotiation to the Conventions 15
