Hegel H80 High End Integrated Amplifier User manual

USER GUIDE Congratulations on your new HEGEL H80! All Hegel products are based on a simple philosophy: The audio reproduction instrument shall reproduce the original musical sound, purely and naturally. It shall use Scandinavian design reflecting natural music reproduction and styling to fit in with any interior. The products shall be easy to operate and shall be manufactured according to the best quality principles. All HEGEL products are designed with acoustical instruments in a concert situation as the point of reference. The music is reproduced exactly like the original and is limited only by the quality of the recording. Our aim is to give you the best possible music experience! SOUND ADVICE The Hegel H80 Integrated Amplifier is easy to connect and operate and requires no prior technical knowledge. However, to get the most out of the amplifier s superior sound and music quality, we have provided a brief description of the connections and use of the amplifier in order to provide a total music experience. We recommend keeping this user guide for future reference. USE & PLACEMENT The HEGEL H80 should be placed on a hard, flat surface to ensure proper cooling. Air circulation is required above and below the amplifier, so be certain there is space above and below it. The amplifier performs best after being powered on for 1 hour, to warm up the electronics. The amplifier must never be placed on a carpet or similar surface that obstructs air circulation through the unit. The amplifier should never be covered while in use or placed on a narrow shelf or in a confined space. The amplifier automatically switches itself off if overheated. The amplifier needs some break-in time before maximum sound quality can be experienced. Never lift the H80 by holding the volume knob or source knob. The H80 is heavy, and applying pressure may damage the knobs.

GENERAL USE On/Off The H80 amplifier is switched on and off with the power button, located on the bottom of the amplifier, on the left side, close to the front panel. When powered up, the H80 takes a few seconds to calibrate. During this time, the outputs are muted. NOTE: When powered up the outputs are muted and the right hand part of the display flashes for a few seconds, indicating mute. This is normal, and is part of the start-up procedure. NOTE: When the H80 has been switched off, wait 30 seconds before powering on again. Display The left side of the display shows the selected source input, while the volume value is shown on the right side of the display. A flashing volume value indicates the amplifier is in mute mode. Source Selector The input source selector knob is on the left side of the front panel. The three letters indicate the selected source input. Volume The volume control knob is on the right side of the front panel. The volume level is indicated by a number between 0 and 99 in the right side of the display. The H80 powers up with a preset volume value. The volume level is adjusted by turning the volume knob clockwise or counter clockwise, or by using the Hegel remote control. Mute Pressing the mute button on the Hegel remote control mutes the speaker outputs and the Pre Out output. The volume number flashes to indicate that mute is on. Press the mute button again to switch mute off. Display On/Off The DISP button on the Hegel remote control turns the display of the H80 on or off. To turn the display off, hold the DISP button for more than 1 second. To turn the display on, hold the DISP button for less than one second. (Optional features) Extra fetaures become available if using the HEGEL RC8 master remote control (optional). These include setting of start-up volume, max volume, factory reset, etc.

CONNECTIONS Rear View of the H80 Integrated Amplifier Always power the amplifier OFF before connecting input/output audio cables and the power cable. Connections from the left: Unbalanced Signal Input An1: Phono/RCA input, left/right Unbalanced Signal Input An2: Phono/RCA input, left/right Balanced signal input: XLR left/right (Pin 1 is Chassis Ground; Pin 2 is Positive Phase; Pin 3 is Negative Phase) Right and Left Speaker outputs Coax1: Digital input Coaxial/RCA Coax2: Digital input Coaxial/RCA Optical1: Digital input TOSLINK/EIAJ Optical Optical2: Digital input TOSLINK/EIAJ Optical USB: Computer input AC Power connection with fuse holder: 230V/115V/100V AC depending on country.

Using the USB Connection: When you connect the H80 to a computer with a USB cable (not included), the H80 will automatically install itself as a USB soundcard on all newer versions of Windows and MAC OS, and most newer versions of Linux. When your computer is connected with the USB-cable you may use the supplied remote control to skip/ play/pause in most media players. The first time you connect your computer to the H80: Connect the computer to the internet and close all media players, such as itunes or Windows Media Player. Troubleshooting with the MAC: H80 connected but no sound out of the speakers: Go to System Preferences Sound Output and select TE7022 Audio w/ SPDIF as the Output Device. 24 bit Audio: The H80 can receive 24-bit music files through the USB interface. Sending 24-bit audio signals from your computer may require some set-up in your media player. Setup varies depending on the operating system and the media player. Consult the FAQ section of the media player for details. CD-quality and lower resolution files: No additional set-up is needed.

GENERAL USE Remote Control The top four rows of buttons are Hegel system remote control functions that can be used to control most Hegel amplifiers and CD-players. Functionality may differ from model to model. The bottom two rows are designated DAC and computer controls (for the H80). Remote control buttons (starting top left) 1. Switches up to next input on your Hegel amplifier 2. Mute for Hegel amplifiers 3. Volume up for Hegel amplifiers 4. Switches down to previous input on your Hegel amplifier 5. Volume Up button. Pressing and holding will increase the output volume of Hegel DAC s Input: To change the selected input on your H80 amplifier you can use the IN+ (1) and IN- (4) buttons, to browse through the different inputs. When the unit is turned On/Off, it will remember its last input state. Volume control: The attached RC9 remote control has two separate sets of volume control buttons. To adjust the output volume levels on the H80, you need to use the buttons to the top right. UP (3) and DOWN (6). Computer controls: The SKIP (13 and 15) and PLAY (14) buttons on the remote control allow you to maneuver the playlist in most media players. The funtionality will normally not require any software installation, but it does require that the computer is connected to the H80 with a USB cable.

TRANSPORT AND SHIPMENT When packing the amplifier for shipping, please follow these instructions to avoid damaging the unit: 1. Put the plastic bag around the amplifier. Make sure the plastic bag does not press tightly on the knobs as this may damage them during transport. 2. Place one of the shock absorbers on the floor, inside facing up. 3. Lift the H80, holding on to the center of the back and front panels, avoiding the volume knob and input selector button, so they do not get damaged. 4. Carefully insert the H80 sideways into the shock absorber. 5. Place the second shock absorber on the opposite side of the amplifier. 6. Lift the H80, holding on to the center of the back and front panels, avoiding the volume knob and input selector button, so they do not get damaged. Ensure the shock absorbers remain firmly fitted onto the left and right sides of the amplifier. 7. Place the H80 in the box. 8. Check that the plastic bag is loose around the volume and source knobs to avoid any damage to the knobs during transport. It should not be pulled tight across the volume and source knobs. CLEANING Fingerprints or stains on the front panel or top cover can be removed with a damp cloth which has been slightly moistened with warm water or a mild detergent suitable for cleaning mirrors and windows. At no time should liquid cleaners be sprayed or applied directly on the amplifier, as direct application of liquids may result in damage to electronic components within the unit.
